The best comparison is not some sort of socialized experiment in Norway but the U.S. before 1914 where all drugs were legal. I don't think that anyone would argue that the drug problem (clogged prisons, turf wars, high use among students, etc) was worse then that it is now.

As to the taxpayers, you are right, they pay through the nose *right now* to maintain the largest prison population in the world. They also pay through the nose to pay the medical costs caused by the adulterated illegal drugs (much like they did for Bathtub gin in the 1920s). Drug prohibition is as a disaster both in terms of "helping" users and in saving money for the taxpayers.

That sounds close. It certainly doesn't sound like he's planning on a trial but possibly a suit against the maid and/or Enquirer.

I'd still trust Rush with my daughter, just maybe not with my medicine cabinet.

But, Rush also has a radio show, and dragging his feet might keep him in the limelight. A denial would be enough for some new listeners to tune out. You can't say, "my publicist advised me not to comment". He's setting things up for a big, public, explanation, where he will probably deny everything illegal, mention that he took painkillers after surgery, maybe that it got out of hand for a little while, and then go on to talk about how the media targeted him because he's conservative. Then he rallies his supporters. Rush is still an entertainer. The only thing worse than lawyers is the media.

How does the saying go, "There's no such thing as bad publicity."

Can't even imagine how his audience has surged, at least today, to hear what he had to say about the allegations.

Drug prohibition is as a disaster both in terms of "helping" users and in saving money for the taxpayers.

But it does provide jobs and power for the bureaucrats, and votes and power for the politicians.

In my opinion (that's all it is), Rush is or was addicted to drugs.

I'm not trying to act like the Grammar Police, but what you have stated here is not an "opinion." It is a supposition. Speculation. It is not an "opinion."

This has got to be one of the most common mistakes in modern discourse. Example: "In my opinion, Saddam did not have weapons of mass destruction." No, sorry, that is not an opinion. An opinion would be "It is bad that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction."

Clarity of writing leads to clarity of thought, and vice versa.

It isn't about the taxpayers silly, it's about the unions..

by NOT saying "I am innocent", he was most probably doing some drugs.

remember that he has a genetic kidney problem he has mentioned once or twice? As I recall it causes pain sometimes. very likely he does have a prescription for some painkillers.

Anyone remember that? "pyelitic cyst" or something like that?

You do not respond to media charges that are not defined. Espcially in a situation like this. I can tell that you have not been in the public sector. You DO NOT respond to charges unless they are specific and official.

The charges in the media are specific: Rush illegally bought thousands of prescription pills from his maid. I haven't been in the public sector (whatever that is) but I did work on a high media visibility software project(s). We released our product and the next day the New York Post had a huge, front page, 72pt headline proclaiming it a "PROGRAM OF HATE" - that it had a hidden antisemitic message. I worked on the specific part of the project that caused this headline. The company immediately issued a complete denial of the claim and called it ridiculous. Case closed.

Now can you PLEASE not convict a man without any proof whatsoever.

I'm not a prosecutor or a judge. I do have an opinion, just like you. It is my opinion that Rush has a problem because he hasn't issued a blanket denial of the charges in the media.

Even the "innocent" (those who may have been 'involved' in some fashion, but not 'criminally' liable), have to be careful and seek 'legal' protection. WHY? Because the government authorities don't 'always' care about your innocence, and will seek to include you in their dragnet.

No offense, but DUH!

No one is arguing that he shouldn't seek legal protection. Besides, all celebrities have that at their fingertips, and all have retained attorneys on the payroll.

This is not the issue here.

The issue is simple. If one is innocent of any wrong doing, one just stands up and says, "I am innocent of these allegations of illegal drug use".

Period.....

Perhaps Rush is merely "Aiding The Authorities In Their Investigation."

Self medication leads to worse pain, always.

Dude, I hope you never get cancer. If you do, however, I'll bet you a dollar you'll change your views on this.

Why do you ADVOCATE damn drug addiction?!

I do not advocate "drug addiction." I advocate relief from pain.

Why do you care how others go about relieving their own pain? It's none of your business.
