WASHINGTON (CNN) -- John Ashcroft came under increasing pressure Thursday to recuse himself from the CIA leak investigation, with one senior Republican senator saying the attorney general should consider doing so.
Asked whether White House political aide Karl Rove's history as a political advisor to Ashcroft during his gubernatorial and Senate campaigns were grounds for the attorney general to step away from the case, Sen. Arlen Specter said, "Recusal is something Ashcroft ought to consider."

The administration is moving too slow on this, and thus letting the Dems set the pace. Big mistake!

Gee how 'helpful' of Sen. Specter. I wonder what inspired him to offer this? A stray FBI file perhaps?

I suspect Arlen knows he's a goner and is getting in his last licks at people like Ashcroft. What a shame!
He entered politics a whore and he will leave politics in the same mode.

Did Reno recuse herself on Chinagate? Did she appoint an independent prosecutor? That was a MUCH bigger deal than this is. Illegal contributions from China mysteriously end up in Clinton's and Gore's campaign warchests, right after each had contact with the guys who gave them, and then our nuclear missile technology mysteriously ends up in the hands of the Chinese, but that's not enough to merit an independent counsel. It just does not rise to the high level required by law.

"Recusal is something Ashcroft ought to consider." It is well grounded in Scottish law.

Spector is just playing cheap politics with this. Ashcroft has nothing to do with the investigation - a career prosector has been assigned to head the team. All Ascroft will do is receive briefings and coordinate cooperation with other Departments. Spector was a federal prosecutor and knows this.

Preempt the investigation.
President Bush needs to ID the perp and fire him. Regardless of seniority.
Perception in politics is everything.
The longer he fiddles, the worse the fire. Act Now!
To: AntiGuv
Why should Ashcroft recuse himself...he has already assigned someone else to handle the matter...
Overseeing the investigation is John Dion, a 30-year career prosecutor who has headed the counterespionage section at the Justice Department since 2002. FBI agents from the counterintelligence and inspections division and from the Washington field office will do the legwork.
