OBJECTIVES: To describe profound hearing loss associated with hydrocodone overuse and the successful rehabilitation of these patients with cochlear implantation.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review.

SETTING: A tertiary otologic referral center.

PATIENTS: Twelve patients with rapidly progressive hearing loss and a concurrent history of hydrocodone overuse. Interventions: Comprehensive medical histories, physical findings, audiometric tests, and, in those patients undergoing cochlear implantation, postimplantation performance data were reviewed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Clinical characteristics of hydrocodone-related hearing loss and open set word and sentence performance in those patients undergoing cochlear implantation. RESULTS: Hydrocodone overuse was associated with rapidly progressive sensorineural hearing loss in 12 patients. In four patients the initial presentation was unilateral, and two of the patients experienced vestibular symptoms. None of the 12 patients experienced improved thresholds after high-dose prednisone. Seven of the eight patients undergoing cochlear implantation have demonstrated early success with their devices.

CONCLUSIONS: Hydrocodone is frequently prescribed in combination with acetaminophen for the relief of pain and has a side effects profile similar to other medications in its class. Although not described previously, overuse or abuse can be associated with a rapidly progressive sensorineural hearing loss. These patients can be successfully rehabilitated with cochlear implantation.

You got it. The whole ESPN comment thing by Rush was absolutely masterful.

Everyone is saying how Rush screwed up bigtime, he's a racist yada yada yada. Fact is, he's one of the most brilliant media guys walking the face of the earth.

He makes a comment he knew would be fodder for the media so as to put a huge spotlight/bulls-eye on ESPN and thereby give ESPN a big advertising bonanza. Rush is too media saavy, too intelligent, too calculated....to say something stupid. He knew exactly what he was doing and so does ESPN.

I just wonder what a 30 second advertisement on ESPN this Sunday will shoot up to. Now with the drug thing working out there, the ad cost is more than likely moving even higher.

Anybody who thinks Rush accidently ran afoul with his mouth this past Sunday are the ones doing drugs.

Howlin, I disagree; I am glad he said it because conservatives need to be vociferous(I think that's the word) about what they feel. Liberals get away with saying whatever they want, look at this Wilson guy making up stuff about Rove. The Libs attack marriage, religion, the military, language, and education. They try to stop prop 54 in California so they can gerrymander their power-base, but tell everyone it is to insure a balanced demographic in jobs and universities. It is time to call liberals what they are, power hungry little piggies that will do anything to stay on top..

Post this little tidbit under 'For What It's Worth":

Long-time listeners of Rush may recall that once a year or so, Limbaugh is absent for a day in order to attend to a required medical exam for certification of his 'Key Personnel' business insurance (or whatever they call it). This is the kinda stuff that CEOs have to do and others who are "THE" reason for a business's success.

Certainly, Rush would have blood work done that would reveal a drug problem - if it existed - and certainly the insurance rates would sky-rocket if that were true... if he could get business insurance at all with a drug problem. In turn, the corporate types surrounding his enterprise would step in Real Quick to take care of such a problem immediately.

So my thinking is that there is nothing to this other than typical prescribed medication for anti-rejection drugs or occasional pain.

Hey, look on the bright side if this turns for the worst, it may turn some WOD types into libertarians who might question the governments intruding on our bodies. If you can't own yourself, do you really own anything?
