I rode a bicycle from the coast of Oregon to the coast of Delaware when I was in college. There is no reason for an experienced cyclist to take up more than a foot or two on next to the line on the side of the road. If he does, he shouldn't be riding in traffic....

One thing I've constantly observed with motorists though, is giving cyclists WAY too much space on the side....I'll be riding within one foot of the line and cars behind with plenty of space, won't pass, evidently because they are nervous drivers, not realizing how narrow their vehicle really is.

Many times the troubles with bicyclists are just as much the fault of drivers as they are the cyclist... You can't get mad at a cyclist just because stupid drivers won't pass him.

I think the writer calling for concealed carry for cyclists facing violent motorists is on the mark.

Watch out drivers, if you try to hurt (or more likely kill) a cyclist you may wake up in the hot place...

120 psi??? Gads, when I rode, the max was about 45...I blew out a tire on my BMX bike in the 80s with 35 psi...just sitting in the driveway in the sun. Is your screen name a description of how the ride on 120 psi feels? LOL.

The problem with where I live is there are precious few nearby trails for bikes and it takes a drive to reach them. When I was a kid, we could ride all over town and only had to be really careful on a few roads.

Now, every road is jam-packed with traffic and the town has tripled in population and about doubled in area.

Not safe for kids to ride in the streets anymore.

I am thoroughly enjoying this testosterone-war that is trying to pass for a thread. But I am disappointed that nobody has been creative enough to combine their hatreds for various groups and start bashing gay Islamic French cyclists.

I agree. I'd much rather have a car pass me a little close than hang back until he thinks he's clear, floor it and cut me off.

I usually give a safe signal and wave a car past me.

You see, this kind of talk is worthless. If a motorist decides he's going to "kill" a bicyclist, not even Richochet Rabbit could pull a gun out of his fannie-pack fast enough for it to do any good. Bicycle riders with guns in their fannie-packs will be able to defend themselves from muggers and other idiots that threaten them from the side of the road, but you're fooling yourself if you think a bicyclist can defend themselves from a Yugo even if it approaches from behind at 45mph.

If the guy hadn't chased the bicyclist on foot and just stayed in his truck and sped off. A gun would have been worthless. But the moment the guy stops and gets out of his vehicle he falls into that "mugger and other idiot" category. Hey, fire away.

I'd like to invite you to try the Rails for Trails paths in northern Idaho...beautiful. Several tunnels and tressles. One tunnel is almost 3 miles long IIRC. Cost a couple of bucks to ride, but well worth it. Not a fast ride because it is a multi-use trail (pedestrian and cycle - unpaved). I'll see if I can find you a link.

They will get this old guy off the road, when they pry my steering wheel from my cold dead fingers! Or when I am not fit to be out there-I'll know when that time comes. I am neither suicidal nor homicidal, I will stop driving of my own free will at the proper time.

My eyes are good, my nerves are good, my coordination is good, my sanity is better than it was when I was young and so is my patience. I have learned to control my temper as well-only a fool would react in such a way as to piss off one of the many nut cases driving the roads these days.

Like any cyclist, I'm quite sure he takes his location into consideration.

Myself, I grew up here and know who and what I am dealing with and this is largely a liberal town of posers who are tootsieroll pops. Hard on the outside, soft and squishy inside behind the wheel.

When I was a paratrooper, I was way more careful about tangling with dead minds driving. Ft. Bragg/Fayetteville/Spring Lake has thousands of drivers at least as formitable as I can be and more. You have to size up the situation and react appropriately based on where you are as much as anything else.

A friend of mine flipped off a horn honker in the turn lane. He was on a Harley and it had stalled. The driver calmly got out, shot him in the buttocks with a 22 cal. revolver - one in each cheek - and calmly drove off. Now, that was cold.
