Tom McClintock's Political Career: R.I.P.
dfu | 9-30-03 | doug from upland

Posted on 09/30/2003 2:42:54 PM PDT by doug from upland

Tom McClintock continues his walk toward the California political graveyard. It is an unstoppable walk, almost suicidal in its dedication.

McClintock is my first choice as governor. He would make a great governor. Ronald Reagan would also make a great governor. Unfortunately, those of us who live in the real world of California politics, recognize that neither McClintock, the Gipper, nor the pornstar will be the next governor of California. We recognize that politics is the art of the possible. Although Bruce Herschenson's recent commercials are well done, they are no more than wishful thinking. I've met Bruce. He would have been a great senator, and he came very close.

So, what will happen to McClintock? Unfortunately, he has painted himself into a corner. He has said over and over that he will not drop out. If he drops out now, he will be seen as a liar. If he doesn't drop out and Bustamante is handed the governorship, he will never be forgiven by Republicans. He will be a political dead man walking. Even if Arnold pulls it out in a close 3-man race, the GOP has been hoping for a Terminator mandate. Such would make it easier for him to deal with the runaway RATS who have been destroying our state.

Yes, McClintock is principled. Yes, Arnold only supports some of my own agenda. But Bustamante supports none of my agenda. I guess I'll take someone with whom I have 70% agreement and can win, rather than someone with whom I have 95% agreement who cannot win. Face it, McClintock Kool-Aid drinkers -- he is a great man but he cannot win. Standing on principles is noble, however, if you get no place at the table, all it does it make you feel good that you did the right thing. With a RINO in power, at least we have some chance of influencing policy. Maybe we can even change his mind on some issues. We will never have any influence over the Mecha Man. He will continue to destroy our state.

Tom McClintock is self-terminating. May his political career rest in peace.

The conservative movement is being dealt a big blow by Mcclintock commiting political suicide for no reason. A California conservative has high favorability from the general public. He has the enthusiasm of the base. He is a great asset to the conservative movement in many future elections to come that is being wasted. Lets face reality, Arnold is getting 2.5 to 3 times as many votes as Mcc in the recent polls and this will not change in the next few days. He will lose.

Given that he will lose, how can the conservative movement best benefit from this situation? It is my belief that he if he bows out quietly he preserves himself well for the next election. If he does not bow out quietly he will get 10 to 15% of the vote and will anger the moderates and thereby ruin any chance at any future election. Who do you want running for CA Senator next time? If MCC drops out quietly then he wins that chance. If he makes a fuss, not only might a more unpopular conservative be running for Senator, but a moderate might beat out the conservative in the primary. So not only will you have a moderate governor, but you may also get a moderate running for Senate.

All this can be avoided if Mcc bows out quietly. He will almost certainly be a shoe-in to run against Boxer.

Thanks for the additional comments. You know what the dynamics are. If that's your decision I'm not going to argue over it. Go for it. Later.

Perhaps, if Clinton were able to run for President again, he might have a better chance of being elected if he also ran as a RINO?

Arnold and Bill are made from the same mold. When a lot of this comes to the light ( the Juanita Brodricks,Monica Lewinskys) down the road a piece, there will be a lot of sqirming from a lot of Freepers and conservative cowards who put the man in office!

As for Bustamante only drawing betweek 18-25% of the vote, I simply cannot agree.  The recall "NO" option is consistantly drawing around 40-45% in the polls.  If those polls are accurate, and I'm not confident of that at all, your prediction would be that he'll only draw around 35-55% of that "NO" vote on the second portion of the ballot.  As I've said all over the forum, that does not compute to me.  The democrats may not like Cruz, but where else are they going to go?

Take a look at the full court press by the left to stop Schwarzenegger.  Are their votes going to go there?  I can't believe that.  I'm faced with the reality that the core democrat constituency will still wind up with Bustamante.  The "NO"s aren't going to vote "NO", then for Schwarzenegger.  They'd vote yes and Schwarzenegger if they were inclined to vote for him at all.  IMO your comments don't address the "NO" votes.

Now, the meat of the issue.  "The claims against Arnold will be true fact."  Sadly those facts will not have been proven in a court of law.  And you know what, that really pi--es me off.  If my wife or girlfriend were attacked by ANYONE, I can guarantee you one millisecond wouldn't pass before they would be on their way to filing a formal complaint against that person.  If I were assaulted in the manner you specify, I would call the police from the location and demand a patrol car be sent to start the investigation.  I might not win my case, but I'd make sure there were a public record paper trail on the mother f---er who committed the attack.  From that moment on the public would know that this person might be inclined to commit such an act again.  And the next time someone was assulted, there'd be a record of a past charge.

Here I am presented with a report from a person I do not know, about a woman I do not know, in a circumstance I have no possible way of knowing all the facts about.  If charges had been leveled, at least we'd have some known facts.  What was her story on the record?  What was his story on the record?  Where did this take place?  Who's story seemed more plausible?  What kind of a person was she?  What charges had been leveled against him in the past?

As it is I'm supposed to judge the man out of the blue based on a report he hasn't even been charged with in the public arena.  To top it all off, the woman is now married and doesn't want to be any part of the telling of this story.

Perhaps this is something.  Perhaps you are right.  Perhaps the woman is of pristine character and perhaps he should be nowhere near public office.  It sure would be nice to be able to verify any of this.  It sure would be nice to see a conviction.  It sure would be nice to have had this made public in a timely manner so women and citizens could be aware of the preditory nature of this person.  And it would have been nice to see a person who was innocent until proven guilty given the chance to tell his side of it.  He may be full of crap, but at least I'd like to give him some opportunity to respond before I decide to end his political career.

Perhaps there are ten or twenty women out there with stories to tell.  If that is true, then he is only partly to blame for what he did to those women.  If any three of them had filed charges against him, the man would not be a viable candidate for governor today.  And it is certain that other women along the way would have been spared continued attacks.

I don't believe that 98% of women would have gladly slept with Schwarzenegger.  Women have varried tastes in men.  Some would have been flattered by his advances and many would have been repulsed by the advances of a married man.

You know your friend.  You may be able to make an assessment which I cannot.  I would need to know a whole lot more before I could buy into this.  I do not think it is out of the question that Schwarzenegger engaged in this type of activity, but I simply cannot judge the yes or no of it on one person's second-hand report over the internet.

In my first marriage my wife wanted custody of our children.  In order to position herself in front of the court and our children, she told the children that I had been beating her regularly in our home.  We lived in a small home.  She was actually able to convince those kids that this was true.  Don't tell me that women are not able to spin things to their own ends.  In divorce, in cases of spurned interest, in cases of wanting to benefit financially, in cases of women just wanting to bluster in front of friends, charges are sometimes made that are not true.  I have no way of knowing what the reality of this situation is.  As I said, perhaps you do.

If you can't vote for Arnold due to this, so be it.  I would urge you to vote your conviction.  If more on this were to develop after the election and it be proven that he was a rapist, you'd have my support to remove him from office.  It is a real tragedy when these type of crimes go unreported and unprosecuted.  We're looking at the worst possible result of that right now.  Here's a guy that may or may not be a rapist.  Sadly the background work that should have been handled in court wasn't done.  That angers me as much as the thought of him actually doing this.

I don't know if there is another case where I have not voted for my ideal candidate. It is somewhat insulting for you to presume otherwise. I suspect that there are some on this forum who would bet on a high school team against the Superbowl champs. McClintock has an equal chance of winning. The overwhelmingly important job in this recall is to make sure that neither Davis nor Mecha Man lead California. Idealism and core beliefs are very important. At some point, we all have to make compromises. This compromise is not enjoyable, but it is necessary.

It it this personally known information that I have known about Arnold that prevents me from voting for Arnold.

Arnold is in reality so much like Bill Clinton in his views and personality.

You "know" this to be a fact??? Were you there?

I, too, have stayed out of this CA discussion because I was told early on that it didn't concern me as I am not a resident of CA -- and that made sense to me. I wouldn't want anybody coming in here to NC and telling us how to pick our candidates.

That being said, unless you are prepared to name names and times, I suggest that you contact the Admin Moderator and have you post PULLED.......as you have charged a man with a criminal offense without backing it up.

It's disgusting that you would even consider posting that information.

I think it certainly qualifies. I guess as things wind down the desperation increases, but this is beyond the pale.

I'm no attorney, but could that be actionable?

I realize common decency escapes you (obvious in your choice to post what you did), but you have made a very serious accusation.

Are you looking for attention or is your friend doing so?

Is your friend in a smokey room somewhere plotting with Larry Flynt to expose Arnold? This crap is sick and you should be ashamed.

I was looking over some of your posts. You seem to have a lot of "convenient" friends/coworkers to help enhance your tales.

My eyebrows are raised even more now. It seems I've seen that pattern a few times on FR.

What do you say to your kids about voting for Arnold Schwarzenegger?

"Kids, I want you to follow the rules, go to church, don't take drugs, don't mess around sexually, and above all, study hard."

"Why, dad?"

"Well, so you'll be a success."

"But Arnold Schwarzenegger didn't do any of those things, and he's governor of California!"

"Son, if you act according to principles, you'll have my respect."

"Dad, Tom McClintock acted according to his principles, and you were disgusted with him."

"Go your room, son."

"Can't do that, dad. You see, I forged your name to some papers and sold the house. The new owners will be arriving shortly. I guess you could seek legal counsel, but lawyers cost money, and I cleaned out your bank account too. I'll be leaving now -- but dad, thanks for all you taught me -- about how winning is everything, and character doesn't count."
