I received an e-mail from Ron Holland, editor of Dixie Daily News, calling my attention to this editorial. Apparently, the responses to Gunita's rant were overwhelming, because the essay was pulled from the St. Augustine Record's website. I was only able to find the text via a cached web page courtesy of Google.

According to an article by Bob Moser and published in the Southern Poverty Law Center's magazine "Intelligence Report," which monitors right-wing and hate groups Yeah, well quoting the SPLC as a source is kind of a tip-off about where the author is coming from.
Hell, I'm a Yankee, and I'm offended by way these people treat southerners...

Gee whillikers, I'm "racist, angry, and twisted!" I always thought I just loved those smelly coastal mud flats where I was born and raised more than Manhattan concrete (which I also have developed a fondness for). Being a Southern Nationalist is fun!

The resentment of a defeated and occupied people often festers for centuries... witness the American South... witness the Middle East.
Unreconstructed Rebel
Oh, I'm a good old Rebel,
Now that's just what I am;
For this "fair land of Freedom"
I do not care a damn.
I'm glad I fit against it-
I only wish we'd won.
And I don't want no pardon
For anything I've done.
I hates the Constitution,
This great Republic too;
I hates the Freedmen's Buro,
In uniforms of blue.
I hates the nasty eagle,
With all his brag and fuss;
But the lyin', thievin' Yankees
I hates' em wuss and wuss.
We got three hundred thousand
Befo' they conquered us.
They died of Southern fever
And Southern steel and shot;
And I wish it was three million
Instead of what we got.
I can't take up my musket
And fight' em now no mo',
But I ain't a-goin'to love' em,
Now that is sartin sho';
And I don't want no pardon
For what I was and am;
And I won't be reconstructed,
And I do not give a damn.

At the time of the Lincoln statue uproar I seriously suggested the SCV should say it was a fine idea and should be linked to putting a statue of R E Lee in DC maybe with Lee's (possible) quote 'Duty is the most subline word in the English language.' Other countries have done this with 'noble rebels'. In Tokyo one of the biggest statues commemorates Saigo Takamori the leader of the southern (Japanese) revolt against the Tokagawa regime.

Gen'l Lee felt called on to surrender, given the circumstances facing him and his command, and I will not fault him for his decision.
I have never felt that way.
Forget, hell.

Why do people like you keep posting articles like this? You're like the foolish darwin award winner that decided to start a fire in a nitro factory.

It might have been a lucky shot from the Housatonic, leaks caused by the torpedo explosion, an accidental strike by another Union ship, malfunction of its snorkel valves, damage to its steering planes or getting stuck in the mud.I don't remember hearing about the ingenuity of the damn yankees in building a submarine and sinking the first ship in history by it do you? But it's better to curse the names of brave men who served their state well than to look at the beliefs of anti-Semites we're supposed to honor as good 'Americans'

The Confederacy was never an internationally recognized nation... But it was and has recently been by the United States. When French divers began excavating the wreck of the raider CSS Alabama they claimed the wreck was that of a private vessel and up for dibs under international salvage law. The United States, on the other hand, claimed the vessel was a warship of a sovereign nation and as such could not be salvaged by any entity but the owning nation. In addition, U.S. maritime lawyers argued, the United States was the successor nation to the original sovereign nation, the Confederate States, and as such had sole rights to the salvage of the Alabama.

This article seems to be right on target. What a stupid tempest in a teapot for some losers to try and make a controversy over the US flag.

Robert E. Lee said, "I surrendered as much to Lincoln's goodness as I did to Grant's armies." Governor, had I foreseen the use those people designed to make of their victory, there would have been no surrender at Appomattox Courthouse; no, sir, not by me. Had I foreseen these results of subjugation, I would have preferred to die at Appomattox with my brave men, my sword in this right hand.

I'd protest for a different reason-- there's no way those traitors deserve the honor of a US Military funeral, nor do they deserve the honor of being buried with the American flag they spat upon.

I think Lincoln set the stage for the destruction of Constitutional rights and strict interpretation and states' rights - an evil precedent whose fruits we are witnessing today in the federal courts. He suspended habeas corpus, he "created" an constitutional concept that a state could not seceed, and he and his generals waged a vicious war against an unarmed civilian population. This set the stage for the concept of "total war" by attacking civilian populations in an effort to undermine the will of your opponent, rather than limiting violence to defeating your enemy's military force in the field. This led to the atrocities of the Boer War and WW1 and WW2.
Having said that, that occurred nearly 150 years ago. For some of today's Southerners to feel that they are "rebels" and not Americans is as nonesensical as modern black Americans demanding "reparations" for what was done to their great-great-grandfathers by people no longer alive.
The crew of the Hunley SHOULD be buried under two flags - the Confederate Flag for which they fought and died, and the American Flag, because after the war ended, nearly all Southerners were again considered Americans.
Southerners have fought with loyalty and distinction for America in all its many post-civil war conflcits - the Indian Wars out west, the Spanish American War, WW1, WW2, Korea, Viet Nam and in the Persian Gulf, to name a few. For anyone, North or South, to assert Southerners are not really "Americans" is the height of stupidity, or the fruit of treason.
The orderly and constitutional secession of a state by the action of its legislature is no way equivalent to anti-government action by individuals or groups of individuals which is truly treason.
(This should aggrevate people on both sides of the issue while pleasing no one - but its the truth.)

They'd like to rewrite history, demonizing Abraham Lincoln and the federal government that forced them to remain in the awful United States against their will. It is a legitimate topic for historical debate. Abraham Lincoln was not successful in avoiding the only Civil War our nation suffered with horrendous loss of life and limb. I think he would have been a more successful President had he achieved the same results without the war.

I have no opinion on this matter except to say that I am opposed to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
This assholes do not "monitor right-wing and hate groups" - they monitor right-wing as hate groups. There is a difference.
