Forgive Russia? There's Quite a Lot to Forgive
Wall Street Journal ^ | Tuesday, September 30, 2003 | GEORGE MELLOAN

Edited on 04/22/2004 11:50:00 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

At their weekend Camp David tete-a-tete, George W. Bush and Russia's Vladimir Putin were all smiles as usual. Yet the Russian president gave little ground on a key issue, Russia's $800 million contract to help Iran build a nuclear power plant at Bushehr. This despite clear evidence of Iran's nuclear bomb ambitions with the discovery of weapons grade uranium there. Mr. Putin only offered to urge Iran to accept fuller United Nations weapons inspections, for whatever that might accomplish.

"Mr. Putin is offering Mr. Bush more help than meets the eye on such problems as North Korean nuclear blackmail and instability in Iraq."
I think there is a possibility that we found WMD in Iraq, and they are of Russian origin. Maybe we are getting cooperation from Russsia in return for keeping quiet about our discoveries. Just a hunch.

But we are not getting very much help from Russia.

I still think they are not to be trusted in the least no matter how much Bush "likes" Putin. If they were sincere - there would be a great deal of cooperation because the goals would be the same. Since there is not - the goals are not the same.

George Melloan is one of the most respected names in journalism. He clearly differentiates between the USSR and Russia in the article. I can understand how the article would offend you personally, but there is something to be said for the fact that today's Russians are at least somwhat responsible for the actions of the USSR. Those people did not go simply go away when Gorbachev stepped down. Putin ran the same KGB that created Arafat.

They say KGB created Arafat in 1967 right? Putin was 15 years old at that time. He never "ran" KGB. He was intellegence officer in 1st directorate the analog of CIA but he served there in 80th..

This kind of "mistakes" or just misrepresentations allow to tell that this article is too cheap..

Yet in forgiving Russia, it would be unwise to forget Russian behavior in the 20th century. ==

Russia wasn't exist between 1917-1991 the most of 20th century..
International communists (mostly nonrussian) killed Russia by the civil war 1917-21 and created USSR. Then russian people killed USSR and restored Russia in 1991..

That is the history of 20th century..

Tell me something:

What was the primary nationality of the members of the USSR, and where did they go after the Russian people broke it up?

Primary nationality? There wasn't.. Most numbers was of russians but thier number was half of all..
Communist power historically started as nonrussian. Russians fought with that power in 1917-21. It was bloody war which russians lost so newstate was created with no name "russian" of it.. Why do you think it happened? Recause new state wasn't russian.. The founders of that state emphasied it especially just in name of that new state..
So that new state was anti-russian from beginning. No russian in charge of this state until Gorby. Whose policy killed that state..
Why that if it supposed be "Russia"? Can you imagine nonfrench presidentof France? Or non american president of America.. Same for Russia impossibe for nonrussian to be in charge of Russia russians never will vote for such..
But USSR was ruled nonrussians..
It is just one point for you. But i can go on and on..

The world would be a much safer place were it not for the nefarious schemes the Russians hatched during the Cold War. The KGB that Mr. Putin served in his formative years was one instrument of those endeavors.

Hmmm, why not blame Ukrainians, Georgians, Belaruss, Cental Asians, etc for it too? Hmmm? Seem the WSUrinal not have problem with American alliance to 2 dictator and former general KGB Shevi in Georgia and Ali in Azerbazhan....also US just give citizenship to other General of KGB...oh and why not go talk to resident Gorbachov? To blame Russia for actions of Soviet Union where on Politburo never more then 3-4 Russians, of 12 peoples when Russain 60% of population and where only Gorbachov the one Russian premier of SU....it is plain racism.

It also can be said that it was morally correct and politically intelligent for the U.S. to be generous in victory and to stretch out a hand of friendship to Russia's new leaders.

Where in Klinton 8 year rule hand of friendship? Hand of corruption yes, friendship? I love revisionist writing. Especially so blatent and silly. What they now excusists for Klinton? Gore personal friendship with Soros and Oligarchs so touching. The attack on Serbs and backing of Chechin so friendly. The theft of billion of industry also so nice while giving loans to corrupt Yeltsin specifying that not all go to Yeltsin pocket or to Oligarch pocket, first bus loads American "advisors" hired....and peoples get to shoulder bill. Clark threat 3 times to start war with Russia also overly friendly.

How goals same? Russia under attack by Al Quida and Chechin branch. In 2001 (early) Bush use UN to stop Russia bombing Taliban. US still cuddle Saudi Arabia...who bank roll mass murder in Russia and to Russian allies Serbia and India. When US stop white washing Saudi reports and show them for what are and stop kissing up to shieks? Then maybe things on equal footing.

His refrence to "the Russians" in SU times is differentiating? Hmm, let me play quize with you. In Korean War...who head of SU? A Russian? No a Georgian. In missile crisis, who head of SU? A Russian? No a Ukrainian. In Vietnam, who head of SU? A Russian? No, first another Ukrainian, then Ossessian. Hmmm, in Paristroyka, release of Wall and disintigration of SU, who in charge? A Russian. This man obviously clueless.

Nope, he does not, he blames the Russians for the evils done by their forebears in the Soviet establishment. Similarly I suppose we ought to blame the Germans for the nazievils and the Italians for Mussolini and the French for Napoleon, the British for a h*** of a lot, all the way back to the Egyptians under the Pharoahs for oppressing the Israelites.
