Bruce Herschensohn does ad for Tom McClintock

I just heard a GREAT radio ad supporting Tom McClintock for Governor. It was Bruce Herschensohn - - California's MR. CONSERVATIVE -- speaking from the heart. An announcement said it was co-sponsored by California Republican Assemply, so I went to their web site - - and here's the official announcement of the Herschensohn ad:

CRA LAUNCHES RADIO CAMPAIGN TO SUPPORT TOM MCCLINTOCK FOR GOVERNOR The California Republican Assembly announced today that it was beginning a radio campaign urging support for Tom McClintock in the recall election October 7th. Bruce Herschensohn speaks candidly with listeners in the 60 second spot confronting the argument that although McClintock is the best candidate, he can’t win.

“If everyone who has said that would vote for him he’d win by a landslide,” Herschensohn says. The spot concludes with an appeal from Herschensohn: “If you think he’s the most qualified candidate, support him. At this point, it doesn’t depend on him, it depends on you.”

Interesting: The CRA website also talks about the drive for a ballot referendum to rescind the illegal-alien driver license law. At the debate Arnold said he opposed this law - - but apparently he also won't support this referendum drive. If the referendum doesn't get on the ballot, how will the law be repealed? I dont' see how it can be; certainly the California Legislature won't repeal it. SO WHY WON'T ARNOLD SUPPORT THE REFERENDUM? My only disappointment with the debate is that McClintock didn't pose hard questions like this to Arnold. McClintock pulled his punches, for whatever reason.

If any freepers don't know who Herschensohn is, he is the longtime voice of conservatism in California. In the 80s he was a regular sparring partner on TV with the ultra-lib John Tunney, an ex-senator. He's been on radio and TV down the years as the state's most effective spokesman for responsible conservative government. He came within an eyelash of beating Boxer for senate in the early 90s- -- but didn't get strong support from the "moderate" moneybags in the party (the same folks who withheld bucks from McClintock when he was running for controller. Herschensohn puts common sense and principle first - - and doesn't believe in compromising away the basics of our conservative faith. Neither does Tom. Neither do I.

But he is clearly totally deluded and wrong in this instance.

You know what the REAL difference is between Arnold and McC?

Arnold is working to DEFEAT Bustamante, while Tom is working hard to ELECT BUSTAMANTE.

Actually, saying Herschensohn was a "sparring partner" with Tunney doesn't tell the story - - - he regularly gave the guy a verbal and intellectual thrashing (in a gentlemanly way). Nobody can out-debate this guy. And nobody is a more reliable conservative. Obviously, he doesn't bend to pressure or the fads pushed or followed by the party hacks or fair-weather conservatives who fall for the first liberal film star who looks their way. He stands firm for the principles that we need if we're going to get out of our mess. Same with McClintock.

I still do, more than ever. He understands that if you stand for nothing, you'll fall for anything. I don't know what it is that Arnold stands for - - and the folks who've fallen for him can't tell me, either.

Well, hardly. Both candidates probably would like to win. Unfortunately the present situation results from the ongoing civil war between the pros and the moneymen in California, who are mostly pro-abort RINOs, and the Republican voters, who are mostly pretty conservative. If they could reach an agreement, things would be great. But they haven't been able to for almost as long as I can remember.

Contrary to what many Freepers seem to think, Bill Simon didn't run a bad campaign. He was defeated--by a small margin--because he was hammered by Davis and shut out by the media. But the key factor was that Karl Rove evidently opposed him and preferred to see him lose. Parsky was kept in place even after Riordan went down to defeat 2-1. No funding was raised for Simon. The RINOs continually leaked to the press that Simon was "running a bad campaign."

No wonder people aren't happy to have Arnold imposed on them. We are willing to compromise, but there has to be some give on both sides. We don't need a pro-abortion RINO sitting in one of the most important seats in the party, ready to cause more trouble in 2004 when the big tent Republicans are certain to raise the divisive issue of dropping the pro-life plank, as they regularly do every four years to the delight of the leftist media.

I consider Herschensohn to be the North Star of conservatism. Forget what the county chairmen or even Issa say; Herschensohn speaks with an independent perspective -- he isn't entagled with the party apparatus and doesn't worry about the repurcussions that his comments might have in back rooms. He sizes up the situation, determines what's right and what's wrong -- and calls it as he sees it.

If he had, the Schwarzepubbies would have howled and accused him of being nasty and mean-spirited in violation of Reagan's so-called eleventh amendment. Instead, they dismissed his issues-focused approach as lacking in leadership.

Not me. I want Davis out - - and McClintock in. I do think there's a large segment of moderate Republicans who don't want McClintock because he's too conservative for their taste -- but instead of admitting that, they're giving other reasons for not supporting him.

McClintock KNOWS he can't win. He is in the race for the specific purpose to ELECT BUSTAMANTE. His own words damn him.

And look at McC's other actions: he is ignoring all the pleadings from his fellow Republicans, including the CA GOP, and other conservatives, he is taking indidan gambling money -- which is given with the specific purpose of splitting the vote, since they are major contributors to Bustamante ---, he never attacks Davis and Bustamante, but continuously attacks his fellow Republican.

Why do you think the communists coined the term "useful idiots"? The McC voters fit the definition perfectly: by their own delusion, they are helping their worst enemy and are feeling virtuous doing it.

I am sure Bustamante is rolling on the floor laughing, when he is reading some of those FReeper posts.

Enough with your sub-hearsay evidence. Burton has never come off as a serious individual, and you should be embarassed for having to use him as a character witness against McClintock. Herschensohn, however, is something else altogether. He is the towering chief prophet of California conservatism. His endorsement of Tom by itself far outweighs and far overshadows all the scores of pigmy political hacks who have dutifully and predictably jumped on Arnold's wagon.
