Strong Earthquake Hits Hokkaido in Northern Japan

Thursday, September 25, 2003

TOKYO — A strong earthquake (search) struck Japan's northern Hokkaido area (search) early Friday, news reports said.

The quake hit southern Hokkaido at about 4:50 a.m. and was felt in central Hidaka and eastern Tokatsu, the Japan Meteorological Agency (search) said, according to the Kyodo news agency.

Under the Japanese seismic classification, the earthquake was strong enough to damage homes and trigger landslides, the agency said.

8.0 !!!

That is huge!

That's 1000 times stronger than a 5.0, which is not insignificant either.

I seem to recall an article posted recently (within a week or so) about a fellow who was warning that a large earthquake would hit Japan in the near future.

So what -- no one lives in Hokkaido? We could be worried for their safety. An 8.0 is a monster of an earthquake.

A little history:

Hokkaido, Japan
137,000 Killed

Off by 8 days and 260 miles, but still...

Same thing as nailing it on the head for earthquake prediction.

Hey, don't have a jalapeno up yo' ass. You don't need to preach to me. I've been through more earthquakes in Nippon than I can remember. Nobody is panicking. Thank you.

You are right. When they had the 5.5 , some people said he was wrong, because the earthquake wasn't as strong as he precicted, well he may have been a little off on the timing, but he got the magnitude right.

Being able to predict and earthquake, even with a margin of error of several days is pretty darn good.

Then the dogs can give the "earthquake imminent" warning.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/09/25/tech/main575049.shtml

Japanese researchers are coming up with some novel theories they believe could provide the answer to one of this country's most pressing concerns — how to predict when a major earthquake is likely to strike.

One researcher, a medical doctor, was in the headlines this week with a study indicating erratic behavior in dogs, such as excessive barking or a higher than usual tendency to bite, may be a quake harbinger.

Earlier this month, amateur astronomer Yoshio Kushida caused a stir with his prediction, based on radiowave fluctuations, that a major quake was highly likely to hit the Tokyo area imminently.

Apparently there was a 4.6 in nearly the same location and nearly as deep 12 days ago. Maybe its just getting started.
