Bowles to run for U.S. Senate To enter race to fill Edwards' seat

Charlotte investment banker Erskine Bowles plans to announce his entry into the U.S. Senate race Thursday, The Observer has learned.

Bowles, a former White House Chief of Staff, is poised to join the race for the seat now held by fellow Democrat John Edwards.

Edwards said this month he would not seek re-election and concentrate instead on his run for the presidency.

Bowles ran in 2002 but lost to Republican Elizabeth Dole.

It's unclear whether he'll have a primary challenge.

Republican U.S. Rep. Richard Burr of Winston-Salem is the presumed GOP nominee.

That is until the Republican leadership grows a spine and adds a set of nads.

And that would solve the filibuster problem how? (he asks, knowing full well the answer)

For the record, I was joking, and I refuse to get involved in that debacle.

The Republicans could have gone 24/7 with the filabuser and Estrada left because his president didn't support him to the extent he should have. Its as much a disgrace to the Republicans that it happened as it is to the Dems that they did it.....And they were the ones being proactive.

And in conducting a 24/7 filibuster all the Pubbies would have to be on the floor, while only 2-3 Democrats needed to be there. Nothing would be done, the older GOP senators would collapse from exhaustion, and the media and many here would blame everything on the GOP.

And Estrada would still be filibustered. I detect a flaw in that plan.

Well stated....you're correct..my further sense is that the GOP feels it will pick up a few seats this cycle...then, if the dems continue to obstruct..tthe GOP leadership will change the rules by a simple majority..the sao-called nuclear option..it'll play better with the public..

Richard Burr would be a HUGH addition for conservatives in the Senate.

You're right JohnnyZ. Burr is my congressman here in Winston-Salem. His voting record is strongly conservative. There's no RINO in this one!
