Interesting that someone would ask. If what I've read is accurate, the Bush family is related to the Royal Family of England who are direct descendants of Russian wealth and royalty going back some 600 years. Oh yeah, then there are the Bush's oil investments.

GHWB = Zapata Petroleum. With some help in getting his stake from his uncle as I recall. He was partenered with the Lidke brothers who then went on to take over Penzoil in the early 60's. GHWB sold out and went into public service.

In short, he made it the old-fashioned way. Family money and a lot of hustle/smarts on his part.

And, oh I forgot. If anybody thinks the fix was in, GHWB and the Lidkes were wildcatting and bet the ranch on the deal in west Texas that came through.

Bush family wealth can be partly attributed to a big chunk of Global Crossing stock given to George H.W. Bush for speaking at their corporate conferences. As I understand, they got rid of most of it before the company tanked, and got somewhere between $5m-$10m.

Okay here it is in a nutshell.
The big money came from George W. Bush's Great-Grandfather George Herbert Walker. Don't remember exactly how he made his money but it was in St. Louis and then he moved to New York. He was big time money in the league of the Vanderbilt's, J.P. Morgan,E.H. Harriman, etc..
George W. Bush's grandfather, Prescott Bush, was an investment banker and was a partner in Brown Brothers, Harriman, as in E.H. Harriman and his son Averel Harriman, former Governor of N.Y. and Pamela's last husband.
Prescott was a U.S. Senator from Conn. for one term. George H.W. Bush with his eastern connections, moved to Midland , Texas after the war and got in the Oil Business, set up Zapata Petroleum, first compnay that specialzed in offshore oil drilling. There you have it.
