I am asking for some help and direction to get some wheels turning. My girlfriend went on line at the library. Right next to her sat 2 10 year old boys. She glanzed at their screen and noticed they were looking at Hard core Pornagraphy on the Web. She got up and told the Librarian about it. The Librarian said "there is nothing we can do" That is their right" "we cannot say anything about what they choose to look at "
Ok so now you tell me that as an adult woman , I can get a ticket for driving without my seat belt on...IT'S The LAW!! they say.
I recall listening to the story about how Ted Bundy himself says he got started raping and killing women. He said it started with looking at pornagraphy . THEN needing a bigger thrill. It got Progressive.
The funny part is that Gov. Blagojevich is pulling all these orphan kids and runaways out of MaryVille Academy because he is worried about their welfare. WELL hello GOV!!What about the kids you can save from getting in trouble! Why are these kids watching Porno on my tax dollars. Why is ANYONE watching Porn at the Library on my tax dollars? Shouldn't they have to pay a "sin" tax?
Ok now for advice from all you wonderful Freepers out there. Are your kids at the Library on the internet watching porn is my first question?
Next how can we continue to bring this to the public/parents attention? How can we get Libraries to use filters. Question..Could a parent sue the library if they found out their kid was on line watch it? I am wondering?
Parents will be in hot water if their kids decide to act out and sexual abuse another small child.
Your suggestions Please.....................

Right now, there is nothing you can do, protect yourself and the people you care about. Eventually laws will be passed, but not for another 5 years or so.

I find it difficult to take anyone seriously who can't even spell what she's "fighting".
As to children watching hard core porn at the library...
Alerting their parents is the common sense thing to do.
What happens beyond that is the parent's responsibility.
I don't even want a whiff of the "it takes a village" crap.

Unfortunately , it is the parents who are ultimately at fault for not monitoring their childrens past times. I have a nephew who is 5 years old. When I was at my brothers house around 10:30 in the evening one night, just chit-chatting away , my nephew was still up ( as usual ) and watching some cartoon network ( sitting about 2 foot away from the 37" screen). I happened to notice the cartoon looked a bit funny, just something struck me odd about it. I guess it was the busty blonde charactor and the male charactor standing there in a towel, surrounded by what looked to be a movie set with a director..........you should see where this is going. I asked my brother what in the world was his kid watching? "I don`t know, just cartoons" he says. Then it hit me. This was the cartoon that has Jenna Jamison ( porn star ) or the likes as some kind of superhero/character. I switched the channel and started a hoopla because my nephew started crying. After explaining what was going on they agreed I did the right thing. Sometimes a little intervention goes a long way to waking people up.

Sounds to me like those young'ens were sexually harassing you with those images - next time stand up on a chair and scream "stop sexually harassing me" repeatedly and hysterically. All you have to do is feel harassed for it to be so.

I do think a librarian ought to have the power to supervise kids in the library..... but that said... Kids have been sneaking or stealing looks at naked wimmen since the first Playboy Magazine... the internet is a new place.... not a new phenomenon.

Get the name of this librarian. Report her actions (inactions) in writing to the Board in charge of the Chicago libraries. Give full details including accurate descriptions of the children, the time and date, and (unfortunately) an accurate description of what you saw on the computer screen being used by the boys. Use clinical language as Dr. Ruth does.
Tell the library Board you expect them to take prompt and decisive action. Tell them you expect to hear what actions they take to prevent this in the future in all libraries in their system. When you do not hear from the library Board within 30 days (a near-certainty), send copies of your letter to every talk show host in Chicago.
Then sit back and wait for the phone to ring and the excrement to hit the air circulator. Anyway, that's what I would do.

I stopped using my public library years ago when I shopped at a local used book store and found it stocked with discards from our library: Things like a young readers book on Benjamin Franklin, loaded with photographs of his inventions and writings. Had this information gone "out of date"? or did they need more room for global warming and Harry Potter? Then when I learned about internet porn available at the same place we send our kids to read and do research, the Volusia County Public Library became totally off-limits for my family. It is vile to think a child could be being stalked by a pig looking at porn, with the protection of the American Library Association, and glancing around at the kids using the library. To us, the library is a dangerous place... The same as a bench in front of a XXXXX bookstore.

Thanks, I was thinking about getting folks and carring picket signs. Truthfully I know lots of folks who would do it. I guess I want to find out how to do it as to not get arrested!

True. Modern day librarians "get off" on their new-found position of challenging John Ashcroft. There are few good ones left. I haven't had the need to go in a library in quite some time - including my school's law library. Research is done on the internet, books bought cheap off of the used section at Amazon or half.com. So much easier.

You'll have to ignore publius. He's been flaming posts all day. He's a rash. Worse. He's a libertarian. I don't know why they insist upon infecting a conservative forum. I guess they need affirmation to validate their otherwise pathetic lives.
Anyway, you keep searching for the answer. Hassle the people in charge. Call your local paper and politicians. Try to find some politically active clergy. You go, girl!
Years ago, in the Courier Journal newspaper in Louisville, KY, there was an article about a woman named Ellen May. She was the mother of two preschool boys, and was browsing in the South Oldham County Library in Crestwood, Ky. She saw a book, Witches and Witchcraft. In the book were vivid descriptions of torture. There were also obscene drawings. She called the trustees of the Oldham County Library who unanimously agreed to permanently remove the book.
You can make a difference. And some child's mental well being will depend upon it.

Yeah - maybe, I know what you mean... But what they get on the internet is a bunch of still-shot ads for stuff they can't buy... - I am not saying it is of value..... I am just saying that for all the kids and adults who look at it, we have very few Ted Bundys...

There are two court precedents that are relevant here. No, I don't have the case names with me, but I can get them sometime if anyone cares. The firse was set when a library decided that the porn viewing had gone too far and put filters on their internet computers. Someone like the ACLU sued the library and won. They had to remove the filters - precedent was set.
The next occurred when the female employees in a library were repeatedly offended by the dirty old men viewing porn on the unfiltered computers. These men had newspapers tented over their laps, one hand under the paper, and the papers were moving. When the women complained, the library refused to do anything about the problem. The women sued because they felt that their work environment was hostile. They won.

I'd have reached over and turned their computer off and told them if I ever saw them doing that again I'd inform their parents.
