I can understand their request that we cease posting their articles. I don't like it, but I understand and shall abide by it.
I am unsure of one point: May we no longer post a headline and a hotlink to The Onion? Have they gone to that extreme?

There's funnier stuff on the web anyway. If you're not humor impaired and can laugh at Bush getting skewered as heartily as Gore, if you want to see a Schwarzenegger video that his supporters and detractors can laugh at together, go here.

Don't neglect "Bubba's Brownies" or the bizarre "HulaBoy" or "Nasty Santa" series.

Why the hell are you here?

Trying to offer a bit of insight and discussion, which you are clearly incapable of doing, since I had to read a few of your responses in the thread before realizing that your not happy that a business acted like a business.

In honor of you, I'm going to post very slowly.

Ready?

Are you sure?

The Onion is a business, not a charity.

Did you catch that? If not, I'll repeat once more :

The Onion is a business, not a charity.

If you don't like businesses, capitalism, etc., not too far off the coast of Florida, there is a small island nation that you would greatly enjoy.

If you need an explanation of the difference between a business and a charity, there are several here who own and run their own businesses, and are quite successful. I'm sure if you post a vanity thread about it, they can help you out.

Those dozens of other sites probably are nowhere near the size of FR

So, copyright only means copyright if it applies to a big guy?

Ahem, the Georgia Tech graphic on your FR home page is copyrighted!

Did you ask them if you could use it?

So, copyright only means copyright if it applies to a big guy?

No, of course not.

I think FR got noticed partially because of bandwidth myself - everytime I saw somebody direct-linking a pic into their posts from TO's website, I felt like e-mailing them and saying "hey, you ought to at least host it on your own webspace, they have to pay for that you know". I chose not to because it's not my place to play net nanny.

FR probably got noticed as well because quite a few of The Onion's articles and graphics that were posted here did not cite The Onion.

Googling through some of those other sites, I see many cited The Onion. They may not get letters because they did, but nobody here knows who got letters besides FR.

From Faq at The Onion on linking, etc.

Before anybody gets upset about copyrights, JR has a notice at the bottom of just about every page. I'm not happy The Onion did this, but in retrospect, it was easy to see it coming.

Stupid is as stupid does.

I thought the folks at the Onion were brighter than this.

They have every right to protect their copyright, I don't hold it against them. Their loss, they make money off selling books and stuff. Posting their articles just gets them publicity.

I shan't miss the Onion. Satire is practically impossible these days.

Our side can't be satirized because the other side doesn't know how. To them, argument, wit, humor, satire, higher education and Great Literature all consist of telling lies and calling names.

Their side can't be satirized either, because no matter how ludicrous, extreme and unbelievable a picture of them we paint, they do even more ludicrous, extreme and unbelievable things in person, and without even being prompted.

When I first read the headline of this thread I thought the Onion was sueing reality for impinging on their ability to create satire. Real story humour trumps the made up stuff of the Onion everyday and the wits on FR and their posts are peerless.
