FReeper Storm Check-in (vanity)
9-19-03 | me

Posted on 09/19/2003 5:33:24 AM PDT by netmilsmom

Through the week, many of us heard of FReepers who were in the path of Isabel. I personally know Gabz, Corin Stormhands and Consitution Day were in the area. I thought it would be a good idea if we had a thread to ask if someone is ok and let them check in. Prayers to our FRiends in harms way. Thanks!

Feeling pretty lucky here in Western Henrico. Eight trees down, none hit the house. Some damage to an outbuilding and one of the cars.

Power came back on Friday afternoon, water on Saturday. Cleanup ongoing.

Thanks for your concern. We're fine at my place. But we're still without electricity. I'm trying to catch up on what is happening in the outside world.

Hey-

Thanks for asking. We lost power about 9pm on Thursday night. I thought by then we might have gotten through the thing without losing power and then bam - no juice. We lost water which came back on Saturday. Gas hot water heater means that at least we can take warm showers. We are still on a "boil water advisory" until Wednesday.

NO trees down in my yard - none! A total miracle. My neighborhood had remarkably few trees down. I truly thought there would be way more down.

The bad news is we won't be getting our power back any time soon. Mr.iceskater called Va. Power yesterday and we aren't even on the list yet. I'm so frustrated with Va. Power. We're surrounded by subdivisions with power but our little area is just too small for them to deal with yet. The problem is something that will take them 15 minutes to fix but if I have power by Thursday, I'll be amazed. I've thrown away hundreds of dollars worth of food.

Well, it could've been a whole lot worse so I guess I shouldn't complain. At least I can get to FR from work for now.

Haven't gotten through this whole thread yet so I haven't seen how everyone else is doing. Hope everyone else came through ok.

Has anyone heard anything from the Baltimore, MD, area

I'm sure someone else has probably answered but I have family in Balto. North (Timonium) seemed fine. I heard Fells Point is/was under water. Annapolis got hit hard too. The Naval Academy was partially under water too. I hope the field house there is ok. I skate in competitions there almost every year.

The worst of it hit between 2-6 am Friday morning in Lancaster County, PA. 40 mph winds with gusts to 60mph. Had a 60 foot tree go down, but fortunately it fell away from the house. Power was out until 8:30 pm Saturday, and we were lucky - some folks in the area won't have power until Wednesday. The outages were fairly spotty in our area, so we called upon all of our mountain survival skills and went out for pizza once the roads were cleared of trees.

Checking in....finally! We're still without power at home and don't expect to have anything before the end of the week. It's hot and sticky in my house and I haven't had a good night's sleep since last week...but at least no trees fell on my home. Power's up at work and I can tell you this, AC never felt so good!!

We clocked 72 mile winds in southern Lancaster county. Right before our power went out the weather channel said they heard 200 trees came down in the country in 2 hours...I guess we got hit with the next two hundred, lol. Thank God we had some frozen gallons of milk in our freezer as they saved the meat.

Ranx checking in from the suburbs of Southwest Baltimore...

Lots o' wind, flooding in the low lying areas and basements. Many big, old trees down. Some unfortunate neighbor of mine had a large tree smash her house and pin her in bed under the debris. Luckily her husband was able to call 911, and they brought in a crane to remove the tree and extract her. Apparently she is okay. However, the same cannot be said about her house, probably a total loss.

We lost power Thursday night and ended up draining the sump in the basement using a hand-powered bilge pump through out Thursday night to Friday morning. Power didn't come back on until Saturday night, so we just cooked on the gas grill and occupied ourselves with cleaning up and restoring the house to its pre-storm condition. Mrs. Ranxerox thought I was nuts to board up some of the 100-year-old windows in the house, but after a couple of 80 mph gusts at 2:00 a.m., she decided it wasn't such a bad idea after all, regardless of the snickering neighbors.

Boy, can I relate. I haven't sleep well at all either. But, as you say, at least no trees fell on my house. Hope you get power back soon.
