Tribe readies recall TV ads Spots for McClintock a ploy, say backers of Schwarzenegger. By Alexa H. Bluth -- Bee Capitol Bureau Published 2:15 a.m. PDT Thursday, September 18, 2003 The Morongo Band of Mission Indians, supporters of Democratic Gov. Gray Davis and prolific political donors to both major parties in California, will launch television ads Friday to back Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock's recall bid, a tribe spokeswoman said Wednesday. The tribe, which operates a casino in Riverside County, also has contributed to Davis' committee to combat the effort to recall him and to Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, the only major Democrat running to replace Davis.

Gray Davis has been great a dividing the Republican Party in California. In fact, its the only thing he has done well at all. Of course it doesn't take much to divide the CA GOP. I think they actually enjoy fighting each other rather than Democrats.

Tribal Gaming is the only "cause" of McClintock's that has flourished in the State of California. Of course, the Democrats helped him with that. Normally he can't get a Bill out of committee to save his butt.

People claim that Arnold is less principled than McClintock, but the former is not taking tribe money, the latter is. Things that make you go "hmmmmmmmm."

What is Arnold's stance on Indian gaming? Does anyone know 8-? I guess they are just another special interest, huh? Who the heck isn;t these days?

btw, the amount of money Tom has accepted from the Indians is at least 1/10th of what Cruz has received over their respective careers much less this campaign, if not less, but that wouldn't be fair to mention now, would it? I'll gladly post the numbers if you wish to see them.

And what is wrong with supporting the Indians rights of sovereignty?

Gee!! Maybe Tom and Arnold could have discussed this last week on the radio if Arnold hadn't high-tailed it, running from a chance to clarify or even offer some positions on issues that obviously get some certain "FR" folks undies in such a bunch?

To me, Arnold is the one who seems to be the one gambling recklessly.

Personally, I don't like the odds that he is who he says he is and will do what he says he will.

invokes Reagan's 11th ..( like it works on rabid Arnold supporters anyway) ;-)

McClintock campaign manager John Stoos said Wednesday that he did not know about the Morongo ads but said he welcomes the help from the tribes.

"We need all the help we can get," he said.

~snip~

"Independent expenditure by its nature means we can't have anything to do with it," Stoos said, but, he added, "it will help us compete with the millionaires."

"Millionaires". Something tells me he means Schwarzenegger and not Davis. It certainly isn't Bustamante.

So how much have the tribes contributed to McClintock in the past for his stance on Indian sovereignty?

I do believe the answer is nothing.

They do not want McClintock to win. They want to divide the Republican vote.

I heard their Bustamante ads described yesterday and they present him as California's savior.

Something tells me you're absolutely correct. I've seen about a dozen interviews with McClintock, and he rails against Schwarzenegger, and never mentions Cruzzzzzz.

Now we know why.

Another interesting angle that could cost the taxpayers.

Well, no, but the current "independent" effort by them (they're not GIVING him money) will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, far more than they've given him in the past. It's not necessarily a negative reflection on McClintock, but in private, he'd have to admit it's pretty clearly an anti-Schwarzenegger effort, viewed in the context of the tribes' even bigger (direct, not indirect-through-ads) contribs to Davi-Mante ... or he's not as smart as I thought.

I'm not sure why you naturally assume that the candidate who is not taking the money is somehow worse on this issue than the one who is (McClintock apparently is solidly for gaming - are you saying that the mere possibility that Arnold is against it is bad? Somehow that would not bother me).

I will note in passing that Mr. McClintock certainly is putting his supporters such as yourself through some very uncomfortable-looking contortions on this issue, and by not taking the money, Arnold is not doing the same to his supporters. :)
