[history]
LOS ANGELES -- Arnold Schwarzenegger claimed Tuesday that Los Angeles' police chief and other law enforcement leaders are afraid they would lose state funding if they opposed Gov. Gray Davis on a bill that would allow the issuance of driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

Ueberroth exited the race last week and said Tuesday that he would not announce his endorsement until after meeting with Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, the only prominent Democrat in the race. The jaw dropping moment of the day...

Although not entirely about immigration, this article reiterates that law enforcement is complicit in their support for drivers licenses for illegals.

"He did, however, say he supported proposed federal legislation that would help those in the United States illegally become legal residents more quickly"
Yeah, Karl "Amnesty" Rove called him on the issue.

I understand AS announced his support for 'normalizing all immigrants' currently in the state at a town hall in LA yesterday.
If anyone can confirm or refute this I'd appreciate it.

| Schwarzenegger said he opposed the bill because it would "bring danger to our state" because it doesn't require background checks of illegal immigrants. He did, however, say he supported proposed federal legislation that would help those in the United States illegally become legal residents more quickly.
There he goes again... "Proposition 187 has been resolved by the courts. It is time to move on. More than 2.3 million undocumented immigrants currently live in California. They cannot continue to live underground. I will work with federal officials to address this problem." Schwarzenegger campaign website - joinarnold.com
Said Proposition 187, the 1994 measure that denied many services to illegal immigrants, was "history" because it has been largely voided by the courts. He supported the proposition at the time voters approved it. "Now we have to move forward with the whole thingand to look at it, what we're going to do with all the people that are undocumented immigrants here in this state. What should we do? Should we have them to stay here, which I think is the right way to do, but how do you then include them in our society, how do you make it official, how do you make it legal?" he said. He added he would try to team up with other states with large immigrant populations and lobby the federal government to address the issue. Associated Press - August 27th, 2003
Schwarzenegger criticized Davis for signing a bill granting driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants, saying, "We're leaving ourselves wide open to terrorism." And he repeated his support for a guest-worker visa program -- "then they can (get) driver's licenses hooked together with insurance." Sacramento Bee - September 9th, 2003
A vote for Arnold is still a vote for Amnesty. He would see the Illegals legalized, and then he would give them drivers' licenses.

"
The Republican gubernatorial candidate, answering questions after a town hall meeting with immigrants in East Los Angeles, said the governor switched from opposing to supporting the bill because he 'knows he's in trouble with the (recall) election' and wanted to pick up immigrant support."
Duuhhh, if they can't get a driver's license 'cause they're illegitimate, what's the chance they're registered to vote? So what's Arnold's stand on the illegals'.

stifling debate, more select crowds..
You're off base on this one. This was a hostile questioner who simply droned on, making a speech instead of asking a question. Cutting such a "questioner" off is hardly stifling debate. And if the crowd was so "select," and presumably (in your view) the questions so pre-filtered, how'd that guy get the mike in the first place?
You have plenty of fodder for asserting that Arnold is dodging (if hardly "stifling") debate and hand-picking crowds without stretching THIS event to fit such a preconception.

Let it speak for itself.
How will Arnold govern the demRats in the legislature? Cut them off, go over their heads to the people, who most here at FR openly admit are more liebral than conservative population-wise?
Good luck!

There. It's all been said, so no one has to post to this thread. Nope. For some STRANGE reason only one side showed up on this thread.

So sad... "true conservatives" drooling over the Sacramento Bee.
He is reiterating the same stance, nothing new. No DL's for illegals, criminal checks and work permits for decent immigrants already living here, and forcing the Feds to shut down the borders and stop the thousands of new illegals constantly pouring in. It's a GREAT plan :-)

GO ARNOLD!
