Because Reagan understood the value of compromise, and those evoking his name don't, they use the scorched earth strategy, which BibChr summed up so well.

Taking some of Reagan's statements is a good strategy, however absent the entirety of the man, is a little...well...dishonest...

You may also recall that Reagan also said we must "paint our positions in bold colors, and not pale pastels".

Reagan always believed in "Strength" first. Of course he believed in compromise but from "Strength".

As note earlier...what is happening here, is that we are compromising first and bargaining from there. We should begin with Strength, then bargain in order to advance our agenda...

All fine, but what is our bargaining "strength" with a Socialist lege slightly to the right of the USSR politburo and a Davis/Bustamante combo owning the Governorship???

The GOP in Cali *has nothing*! Not a single statewide office. Conservatives?!?! They have even less - not only dont they have no power or office, they have a populace indifferent and a powerful media hostile to them.

The first step is getting into the arena. WINNING. Any fine words are hollow if you let defeat get snatched out of the jaws of victory here. Merely choosing Milton Friedman over Karl Marx is a massive step in the right direction over where Cali is going in the hands of Democrats.

So let this be a simple rule - first, do no harm: The first task is removing Davis and making sure Bustamante does *not* win the Governorship.

To implement that, unity is needed. From unity comes strength, from strength comes the ability to win some points and advance the agenda. Failing to win this election over Bustamante WILL BE HUGE SETBACK FOR THE CONSERVAITVE CAUSE. It will be made worse if conservatives are "blamed" for the division or if it deepened conservative vs. moderate divisions in the GOP.

And why is California in this mess now? Could it be because conservatives forgot to ELECT anyone to office for 20 years? Perhaps this was just an oversight on your part, but it sure looks like the stew has been cooking a long time and you conservatives aren't going to get what you want now no matter how big a tantrum you throw.

While I agree with you about the need to win, it is how you get there that makes or breaks you. If we simply adopt the left's agenda and run a candidate with an "R", we will win. Great, we advance their agenda but we won.

So the next course of action would be to run a "stealth" candidate, one who campaigns on liberal issues but is really a conservative. Now you have deceaved the electorate and prove you cannot be trusted.

So finally we put out an actual conservative and show the State what we actually are. If the people don't want us, we should not win. However, most people when you get past the media influence actually agree with us.

So right or wrong, I believe we cannot put forth candidates that are "pale pastels", but need to put forth candidates that use "bold colors" to define who we are.

Lastly, before you talk about Simon (which is the argument against the above) Simon ran a horrible campaign and was going against a Governor that raised more money with his "cash for policy" programs.
