FORMER GOP GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE BILL SIMON JOINS WARD CONNERLY TO ENDORSE PROP 54

SACRAMENTO, CALIF.Ward Connerly, chairman of the Yes on Proposition 54 campaign, announced today that former Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon has endorsed Prop 54. Mr. Simon released the following statement of endorsement:

Prop 54 will accomplish exactly what Californians deserve: a color-blind government that will no longer require its citizens to present their race before they can be recognized. Government should get out of the business of classifying and dividing people by race for good. It's not their business to keep track of, just as they don't keep track of people's religion or sexual orientation.

I'm deeply troubled by Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante's announcement that he intends to spend over $4 million of Indian tribe gambling money to oppose Prop 54.
The Lieutenant Governor's use of this money for this purpose is legally and ethically questionable. Furthermore, we know he will not argue against Prop 54 on its merits, but rather will play to people's fears by spreading falsehoods.

The Lieutenant Governor has claimed that people's health will be put at risk by Prop 54, but he knows this is not true. There is a full and complete exemption for all medical subjects and patients. He has claimed that Prop 54 was intentionally designed to wreak chaos and lawsuits, but he knows this is not true. A crack team of attorneys crafted the initiative to be as clear as possible.

In America we all should believe in a color-blind society, and I would hope all parties to the debate agree that public policy should be decided on facts, not scare tactics. I look forward to contributing to that debate as much as possible.

Prop 54, which will appear on the October 7 gubernatorial recall ballot, will bar the state and all local California governments from classifying individuals by race in the areas of public education, employment, contracting and most other government operations. Reasonable exemptions exist for medical research subjects and patients, racial classifications required by federal law or for federal funds and certain activities of law enforcement. The state legislature, by a two-thirds vote and with the governor's approval, can vote to exempt any other reasonable area. Also, the Department of Fair Housing and Employment will receive a 10-year sun-setting exemption.

Too bad current liberal GOP candidate Schwarzenegger says that the only people who support Prop. 54 are "right wing crazies."

Yeah, but don't you know that Arnie knows that what he says about Prop 54 won't make any difference as to whether or not it will pass? It's about strategy, dude. it, and conservative Californians just need to talk to him after he's elected.

I for one would give quite a bit to see all racial references stricken from every corner of federal, state and local government... it just sounds like doing it this way might create an huge flood of cases in our courts.

BJ is doing a repeat performance of going with the RINO (first McCain, next liberal Ah-nold). I'm getting more and more of the opinion that he can't beat Boxer.

Rohrabacher has endorsed Arnold, but I don't think he can be called a RINO.

At least Jones knows how to win statewide, and that's more than can be said for nearly every California GOP politician.

But he can be called wrong for doing it. He ought to know better. Perhaps some of these guys have been in Congress too long if these "Conservatives" have so much trouble plainly identifying a liberal trojan horse in our ranks. :-|

True, though I think Jones may be a redux of Kip Fong's bust of a Senate campaign in '98 (and I supported Fong over Issa in the primary based on his experience with winning statewide).

He's wrong to support Arnold but he's not a RINO. Same with Bill Jones.

Jones is a Moderate not a RINO (There are moderates in the GOP, like Mitt Romney, and Bob Ehrlich. The moderates are usually in the Libertarian wing of the GOP, not to be confused with the Liberal wing of the party.)

Fong was a flop, but in Senate races it's better to nominate someone who has won statewide before.

I'm just saying that Jones is really tone-deaf when it comes down to whom to support. His political stupidity in '00 deprived him of the support he needed that would've seen him coronated for the GOP nod for Governor last year. Seeing him do a repeat performance with you-know-who does not have me instilling much confidence in him. He reminds me too much of the competent, but ultimately disappointing candidates we ran for Governor in '74 and '78, that being Houston Flournoy (the then-Controller) and Ev Younger (the Attorney-General).

It would seem, but of the 3 Senators we've elected in CA since 1964 (George Murphy, Sam Hayakawa, and Pete Wilson), Murphy and Hayakawa had never run for office previously. Alas, Hayakawa was the last good Senator the state had.

That's what I'm worried about. I don't think Jones is remotely tough enough to take on Boxer. Strickland I don't know well enough to judge him. Marin would have the advantage since she's a woman and a Latina, and Boxer couldn't be as vicious towards her as she could with "the boys." Ironically, despite my 1000% opposition to Ah-nold as a Gubernatorial candidate, I actually wouldn't be nearly as opposed if he were to run against Boxer. In DC, Ah-nold would be in a controlled environment where he might vote as he's told to by the White House. RINO Senators usually don't have quite the corrosive effect on their own state's parties as RINO Governors do (since the Gov is the de facto head of the state party). But as a Chief Exec in Sacramento... that's a big no way. BTW, I don't think Ah-nold could beat Boxer, either.

Jones and his people lost TWO gubernatorial races last year. They lost his primary and then the Jones people were rammed into the Simon campaign. Jones' manager Rob Lapsley made the decision to bring up the "photograph" at the end. The Simon campaign did not start going badly until the Jones machine wormed their way in.

Prior to that, Jones' big victory was barely winning in 1998 by 3000 votes statewide against a 20-year-old girl in a wheelchair who had no resources...against the highest ranking Republican elected official in the state. Way to go Jones team. In 1994 he coasted in on the national GOP landslide.

By the way Jones' former press guy, Sean Walsh and a few others are now on the sinking Good Ship Schwarzenegger. walsh is teh one who said that of course, Arnold would raise taxes...good one Sean.

Old timers will remember Bill Jones as the Assemblyman who joined Pete Wilson's tax rasing team and overthrew the Assembly Republican leader who was fighting Pete's largest state tax increase in American history.

Jones' daughter who particpated in the above fiascos is now chief apologist for Senator John McCain.
