Our State Legislature is working mightily hard to drive jobs and business out of California.

My "living wage" goal is $1,000,000 and hour. I only have to work an hour or two then they can let me go. They wouldn't even have to provide any benefits. < /sarcasm>

Seems the goal in the "living wage" proposals, even if they fail, is just to garner votes.

When you "legislate" a living wage you just drive out businesses. If the federal government would let free enterprise work without interference that includes unfair free trade agreements and massive illegal immigration the market will work itself out, providing competitive wages to draw in employees.

Kalifornia would be a lot better off prohibiting business with anybody who hired illegal aliens, rather than setting artifically high wage and benefit rates.

All this bill will do is drive up the wage base for minimum wage jobs, thereby making it more attractive to hire illegal aliens at lower wages and no benefits. Americans at the lower end of the wage scale will be squeezed out of more jobs. It will also encourage more employers to throw in the towel and either fold or move.

But that's OK. It gets the Socialists more votes, throws more Americans on government assistance, sends more money to Mexico, increases the job base for illegal aliens and increases resentment and discord here at home (which they can continue to demogogue).

All in all, it's a win-win for the Dems!

This is one more example of the "Californication" of the nation. More businesses will be packing up and running for the Arizona or Nevada borders as a result of this piece of legislation. The first rule of finding yourself in a hole is "Stop digging."

In the shadow of the richly deserved recall of Gray Davis, the state of California continues its economic suicide by legislature. Pathetic.

Before it adjourns, will the California legislature make monogamous heterosexual marriages invalid? Will it declare sexual activity of any and all types, even beastiality and pederasty, not only as civil rights but as permissible when conducted in public? Will it rename the California cities whose names derive from Catholic saints? Will it make homeschooling illegal? Will it increase the income taxes on higher incomes to 50% (of course with generous deductions to entertainment related expenses)? Will it request the Marines leave Camp Pendleton and the Air Force leave Edwards AFB? Will it make narcotics legal (with the State government having a monopoly on sales)? Will it declare defecating or urinating on all property, public or private, a civil right protected to the full extent of the law? Will it ban all churches that believe the Bible is the inerrant Word of God and are not affiliated with the National Council of Churches?

Then finally, will it make Spanish the mandatory and only language to be used in government and business dealings in California?

I don't know if anyone who's replied so far has actually read all the way thru, but here is who the $10 minimum wage applies to:

Any company with a contract with the State of more than $50,000. Any State agency.

BUT ----------

The bill includes a number of exemptions, including current contracts and contracts for janitorial, housekeeping, window washing and security services if the wages were at least 85 percent of comparable state pay. It also would exempt companies that sign union contracts with their employees.

What company that has a big contract with the State would have lower-wage jobs that aren't janitorial, housekeeping, etc? All state employees are already either making more than 10 clams an hour OR are union members.

And what state employees are there that are not either union members OR are already making 10 clams OR are in the exempt category?

I'm guessing that a thorough analysis would show that this bill is not going to cost ANYONE - including the State of Colly Farnia - one more thin dime. Because anyone covered by the bill is either already making that much or is a union member or is exempt.

Political grandstanding at its finest.
