A hefty majority of California voters disapprove of the new law that will grant driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, with distaste running especially high among Republicans and whites, according to poll numbers released Tuesday.

One day after a conservative Republican group kicked off a referendum campaign to overturn the law, a new Field Poll showed that 59 percent of registered voters disapproved of the bill and 34 percent approved.

Indeed, where IS John Ashcroft? This cannot be federally legal, can it?

When you have laws passed by the legislature that the majority of people oppose, you don't really have representative government anymore, do you?

Davis, with his usual mendacity, referred to the law as "allowing immigrants to drive." I think Arnold Schwarzenegger and other legal immigrants, even if they can't pronounce California the way Davis thinks they should, have been able to get licenses and to drive.

Jay Leno pointed out that it is now easier to get a driver's license in California than to rent a video from Blockbuster.

"Here's the question that needs to be asked of California voters: Do you want safer highways and lower premiums? If that question is asked, I think the people of California are going to support the bill," said Cedillo, author of SB 60.

PLEASE! Where are my hipboots and shovel? Something's pretty stinky around here.

This guy is possibly either stupid or a liar. But apparently both.

I contacted my congresscritters and insisted that they draft legislation which pulls federal highway monies from any state that issues drivers licenses to illegals or undocumented persons of any origin. Last I knew Mexico and any other nation issues drivers licenses as well as international ones for visitors. This is a national security issue.

The mere mention of it though seemed to make the congresscritters crawl into their shell.

Something larger is at work here.....

Whether a state issues a D/L to an individual is a state issue. However the US does not have to recognize it as legal identification.

It's a good point. A California license would be generally accepted in most other states as a valid driver's license. Whether it's accepted as proof of citizenship is up to the state. I should probably write my Secretary of State and suggest to him that anyone moving into Illinois from California and applying for an Illinois Driver's License be required to show proof of citizenship before they get it. Usually you just have to surrender your previous home state's DL.

Of course we are against this law! It is an abomination! It is a typical pandering to the minorities move by the leftist, only this time they went too far. As to John Ashcroft, those of you asking where he is, are you usually the one's suggesting he is infringing on your rights? Perhaps this is a state issue, which I also hear complaints about, although I think it should be stopped yesterday.

NO. I am not one of those who has criticized Ashcroft. While I see and understand the arguments made against him and Patriot Acts 1 and proposed 2, we are at war, and frankly we have never fought a war while at peace .. errrr you know what I mean., I hope.

I am concerned that the DHS is not doing enough with respect to protecting our borders, especially the border between Canada and the US, but short of declaring martial law and turning this country into fortress america with roadblocks every 5 miles and searching anyone's home, business, etc at any time without search warrant or even reasonable suspicion, what else can be done?(i hope that came out right)

Remember , we don't hear about the attacks that have been thwarted either. Make your own decision as to how we are doing.

I, for one, will vote Bush Cheney in 2004 and stay the course, as their is no viable alternative, that is worth a damn being proposed by anyone else, imo.
