Zaffirini injured in fall on ice

Senator breaks shoulder bone practicing for hometown event

10:13 PM CDT on Tuesday, September 9, 2003

By ROBERT T. GARRETT / The Dallas Morning News

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Texas redistricting battle has exacted a price from the Legislature and its members, but now there's a broken bone on the list.

Sen. Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo, broke her right shoulder bone in two places late Monday in a fall at an Albuquerque ice skating rink.

Ms. Zaffirini, one of the 10 Texas Democrats who have spent six weeks in New Mexico to thwart a GOP plan to redraw congressional boundaries, said Tuesday she was using some of her spare time in Albuquerque to brush up on skating so she could "drop the puck" at an upcoming match of the minor league Laredo Bucks hockey team.

"I'm a real sports enthusiast," said Ms. Zaffirini, 57, who said she had performed the ceremonial role at a Bucks game last season but was embarrassed to have to walk to center ice on a red carpet rather than skate.

"I told them I would skate out this time," she said. "I skated in college and after that, but I have never learned to stop."

The senator was practicing for a skating lesson scheduled for Tuesday, she said, when two youngsters skated close to her. She tried to alter her course but lost her balance and fell, she said.

But Ms. Zaffirini, who is known as a workaholic, remained true to form.

From a hospital emergency room late Monday, she participated in a conference call with her fellow Democrats. Tuesday, wearing a sling, she resumed work in her hotel room, went to an orthopedic surgeon and shopped for "stretchy tops" that she said will make dressing less painful.

Doesn't this conjure the most ironic thought? Trying to escape duties, but instead ice-skating? Talk about mismanagement, etc.

This incident gives me better insight into the grueling life of a Democrat: I see their constant struggle for the working man - the little guy who labors at a lousy job all day - just so rich, Republican fat cats can sharpen their ice skates and play at the ice ar... e...

...na.

Hmmm.

A workaholic huh. My rosy red rear! Can it be called work when you are a democrat. Can it be called work when your day is spent thwarting the "work" of the Texas legislature? Can it be called work when it ought to be called what it really is? Can it be called work when it is worthy of scorn? Can it be called work when it is worthy of a trip to the woodshed, if not worse? This child in a womans body, and I use the term loosly, isn't worth the newsprint it took to tell us she can't skate either. Dems at work, what a pathetic picture that conjures up. Meanwhile some of the rest of us are working our rosy reds off just to earn a living.

The local media has been reporting that the runaways were working on their normal duties. Wonder how long it will take them to make a big deal out of this story? [NEVER] There was a small, teenie, tiny blip BURIED in the Metro section of the local paper about this today. I remember seeing the one senator ironing the TX flag on the FRONT page. The whiners were ALWAYS on the front page of the paper.

Some sort of a star on her lapel. Probably a red one.

Probably a red Commie Star that MoveOn.org gave her after they raised $1 MILLION to help these renegades out.

The Communist Party USA links MoveOn.org on their website. It's the DARK BLUE link at the TOP LEFT of the CPUSA site ...
