Dozens Wounded in Explosion Near Central Israel Army Base in Apparent Suicide Attack.
The Associated Press.
JERUSALEM Sept. 9 An explosion went off near an army base in central Israel Tuesday, killing at least three people and injuring dozens, police and rescue officials said. Security sources said the attack was apparently carried out by a suicide bomber.
The explosion occurred at a bus stop near both the Assaf Harofeh hospital and the Tsrifim army base near the Tel Aviv suburb of Rishon Letzion.
A spokesman for the Zaka rescue service said three people were killed. The Magen David Adom rescue service said about 30 were injured, 15 of them seriously.
Security officials said there were many soldiers at the bus stop.
"The attack today is further indication that the Palestinian Authority is doing absolutely nothing whatsoever to reign in terrorists or to dismantle the terror infrastructure in their areas," said David Baker, a spokesman for Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who is visiting India.
Israeli authorities had been on high alert for terror attacks in the wake of Saturday's botched attempt to kill Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, the founder and spiritual leader of the Islamic militant group Hamas. Security was especially tight in Jerusalem on Tuesday.
The explosion comes as Israeli Cabinet and security officials have been calling for the expulsion of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat whom Israel holds responsible for the attacks and there has been some speculation that a suicide bombing that causes many fatalities might be the trigger for such a move. The United States has blocked the idea in the past.

You are too kind. "Demons" is a better word though, as well as "plague".
At least two people were killed and approximately 30 were reported wounded Tuesday, 15 seriously, when a suicide bomber blew up just before 6 P.M. at a crowded bus stop adjacent to the Tzrifin military base near Rishon Letzion. Security officials said there were many soldiers at the bus stop.
Police, who were checking the possibility that the suicide bomber was a woman, evacuated bystanders from the scene of the attack, fearing additional explosive devices might have been placed there.
Police cars chased a vehicle spotted fleeing the site of the bombing shortly after the attack took place. The car was supposedly heading north towards Netanya.
Emergency rescue workers at the scene of the attack found the body believed to be that of the bomber.
The wounded were evacuated to the nearby Assaf Harofeh Hospital, Ichilov Hosptial in Tel Aviv and Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer.
"The attack today is further indication that the Palestinian Authority is doing absolutely nothing whatsoever to reign in terrorists or to dismantle the terror infrastructure in their areas," said David Baker, an official in the Prime Minister's Office.
The security forces have been on high alert since Israel's failed attempt Saturday to wipe out the top leadership of Hamas, including the radical Islamic movement's spiritual leader.
Speaking on Sky News, Hamas spokesman Abdel Aziz Rantisi did not claim responsibility for the suicide attack, but said that it was carried out in response to Israeli "crimes."
Security forces raised the alert level in Jerusalem on Tuesday morning due to warnings of terror attacks. Israel Radio reported that the security forces suspected one or more terrorists may have already succeeded in infiltrating into Israel.
In recent days there have been increasing calls, especially from right-wing ministers within the cabinet, for the expulsion of Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat. The United States, however, has expressed opposition to such a move.
Secretary of State Colin Powell on Sunday rejected further dealings with Arafat but restated U.S. opposition to the idea of deporting him from the territories. That, Powell said, would "put him on the world stage as opposed to the stage he is currently occupying."

If the Euro-centered United Nations were running Iraq, I have no doubt they would side with the terrorist over the Americans in that country as well.
Ahead of Tuesday's attack security forces were on high alert following the airstrike on Hamas leaders in Gaza on Saturday. (Haaretz)
Is this part of the "occupied" land the Palestinains claim? Of course, since it is in Israel, it must be.
HOMICIDE BOMBER!!!
The citizens of Israel refuse to deal with the problem.
Every day the terrorists carry through with exactly what they said they will do.
THIS IS THE WAY ISRAEL AND ISRAELIS PREFER TO LIVE
If they didn't want it this way, THEY WOULD ACT. THEY DON'T.
If a sovereign state of democratically elected leaders wishes to commit suicide, we must let them.
Powell said Israel needs to show more restraint yet?
