Q&A: Gay Mentors Like 'Gasoline on a Fire'
Focus on the Family ^ | September 8, 2003 | Pete Winn

The Alliance Defense Fund warns school districts nationwide of grave consequences if they pair kids with homosexual Big Brothers or Big Sisters without parental consent.

Last year, we learned that Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) was mandating its local chapters accept homosexual mentors for youth. Worse, we learned that some of BBBSA's school-based mentoring programs were pairing students with open homosexual mentors — without the knowledge or consent of parents.

Recently, the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) mailed a letter to hundreds of major school districts — from San Francisco to New York — warning them the situation could place schools in potential legal jeopardy.

Ben Bull, ADF's chief counsel and vice president, drafted the letter.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q. Explain for us: Why are you sending out the letter?
A. Essentially, we are notifying school districts that they are at risk for substantial potential liability for matching up practicing and active homosexuals, as a part of the Big Brothers-Big Sisters organization, with at-risk teen-agers in the complete absence of parental notification or parental consent. This is a tinderbox waiting to ignite. It is just a matter of time before complaints and situations — much like the abuse of the mentoring relationship among homosexuals in the Catholic clergy has led to hundreds of lawsuits and molestation situations.
What we're trying to do is sensitize and alert the general public — school districts and parents — of this problem that they really need to address right away.
Q. I can envision — in fact, I can practically hear it in my ear — that homosexual activist groups like the Human Rights Campaign or National Gay and Lesbian Task Force — or even the ACLU — will respond to you and the letter by complaining: "Not true. You're being homophobic (with this letter)." OK, they're wrong — but why?
A. What we're trying to do is see what has happened in the past with other organizations and err on the side of caution. We know that when active homosexuals are matched up with at-risk teenagers of the same sex, that, at the very least, it permits allegations of abuse. And we know, based upon the church situations, that it can lead to actual abuse.
The answer here is parental notification. If parents want to put their same-sex children with practicing homosexuals, they ought to have a right to know that that's happening and give their advance consent. Sadly that's not even happening.
It's ironic to us that Big Brothers Big Sisters will not place mentors of the opposite sex with at-risk teens. That is, they won't place men with female students, or female mentors with male students, because of their own past experience with sexual misconduct. But what they are doing here is exactly the same thing — with active homosexuals being matched up with same-sex teenagers and students without parental consent.
Q. Will you be warning the schools that ADF will be taking specific legal action — or is this just a general warning that future legal action COULD eventually happen?
A. We're placing the schools on notice of a very real and present danger. We would be more than happy to work with the school districts to have them develop parental consent forms for parents who need to know what is happening with their children.
However, we will also represent families — and their children — who fall prey and are victimized by this process; basically in situations in which Big Brothers Big Sisters and school districts are reckless about matching up the wrong people with at-risk teenagers.
Q. Obviously, in the case — or, I should say "cases" — of molestation in the Catholic Church, we're talking about millions of dollars in damages-and legal liability. One ex-priest has even been killed in prison. In other words, there are some very real consequences and issues at stake here, aren't there?
A. Given the example of what's happened with the Catholic Church, I think, school districts in this country could be facing tens of millions of dollars of potential liability. It's an accident waiting to happen.
When you see two cars approaching each other from opposite directions and you know a collision is going to happen, it's your duty to yell — "Turn; move aside; avoid the accident!' That's what we're trying to do here for the children, the parents and the school districts.
Q: You seem to think a release form might be one answer. Are there other possible answers to the problem?
A. At the very least, parents should have the right to know who is spending time with their children — especially when those children are at-risk. Now, parental notification would at least allow the parents the right to know in advance what's happening to their kids. We don't believe that practicing homosexuals ought to be matched up with children of the same sex. It's too easy for them to fall prey to their inclinations
Q. Do you think school districts will take the letter seriously?
A. I think school districts will, indeed, take it seriously. I think some districts will claim that they are not obligated to tell the parents about this problem. Other will have their lawyers draft parental consent forms.
Now we can't reach and persuade everybody, but if we can reach a substantial number of districts around the country — and Big Brothers Big Sisters — to change policy, it will be a huge success for us.
Q. Ben, we've had a recent Supreme Court ruling overturning the sodomy statute in Texas, in which Justice Anthony Kennedy talked about the privacy rights of homosexuals; we've had same-sex marriage come to the fore in Canada and the issue work its way through American courts. Has any of that, in any way, colored or changed the Big Brothers Big Sisters situation?
A. Yes. I think the misguided decision by the Supreme Court in Lawrence v. Texas, and the Canadian marriage decision have opened the floodgates to the victimization of children.
I mean, no longer is it legally stigmatized to have sex with persons of the same-sex. It will be so easy (for homosexuals) to creep from having sex with somebody who is 18 or older to suddenly having sex with somebody who is 17, 16, 15 — even younger. Especially when they are matched up in an unsupervised situation, one-on-one, with kids who have lots of problems. Yes, I think these decisions have thrown gasoline on a fire.
The homosexual historical footprint is large when it comes to the rape and murder of children. The most notorious child killer might be Gilles de Rais (Bluebeard), remembered for raping, torturing, and killing perhaps 800 boys in 15th century France. Gilles often raped the boy as he hung from a hook by the neck. Before he died, Gilles took him down, comforted him, repeated the act and either killed him himself or had him slain. In his confession, Gilles testified that "when the children were dead he kissed them and those who had the most handsome limbs and heads he held up to admire them, and had their bodies cut open and took delight at the sight of their inner organs; and very often when the said children were dying he sat on their stomachs and took pleasure in seeing them die and laughed..." (www.crimelibrary.com)
At the turn of the 19th century, "hobos" or "bums" in the U.S. were often driven from towns because it was believed that they were responsible for raping and killing boys. Even the murder of a boy by homosexual lovers Leopold and Loeb in 1924, then called the "crime of the century," likely involved rape. As of July 23, 2001, the Associated Press list of the worst serial killers in the United States was topped by Donald Harvey, followed by John Wayne Gacy, Patrick Kearney, Bruce Davis and Dean Corll in descending number of victims (www.crimelibrary.com). All these perpetrators of serial crimes in the 1970s and 1980s engaged in homosexuality, and the majority of the victims for the last four killers were boys. Family Research Report - Dec 2002
Why is the American public largely unaware that roughly 500,000 boys sell street sex to adult males of this great nation? Why are adult molesters -- infecting thousands of boys with AIDS -- not jailed for contributing to the delinquency of minors, statutory rape and premeditated murder? The homosexual authors confirm common sense. "(G)ay men truly ... have a proportionate share of violent individuals in their midst who bash other gay men (and boys) in startlingly high numbers. The gay community needs to recognize that wealthy, white, educated, 'politically correct' gay men batter their lovers." WorldNetDaily: The darker data
"[The media] doesn't want the public to think about homosexuality and pedophilia and torture and the murder of children," says Don Feder, a conservative columnist at the Boston Herald. ABCNEWS.com : Did Media Hide Gay Murder Case?
Earlier, in the December 2002 issue of a prestigious journal, the Archives of Sexual Behavior, Moser--along with several other prominent mental-health experts--argued in favor of de-pathologizing pedophilia. Some of the commentators writing in that issue said that there is little or no proof that sex with adults is harmful to minors. Another mental-health expert argued that society should not discriminate against adults who are attracted to children--noting that many beloved authors and public figures throughout history have been high-functioning individuals who could actually be classified as pedophiles.American Psychiatric Association Symposium Debates Whether Pedophilia, Gender-Identity Disorder, Sexual Sadism Should Remain Mental Illnesses
 Looking at the issue historically, argues psychologist Robert Prentky, the age for sexual consent used to be age ten in England until about 100 years ago. So when, Prentky asks, is "a child no longer a child?" Certainly there are some 12-year-olds, he says, who are mature enough to give valid consent for sex. Prentky also observes that some of our culture's most beloved heroes were "clearly pedophiles" --including, he says, the authors of the children's classics Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland.
The debate in the Archives provides an eye-opening view into the philosophical reasoning employed in the ongoing debate about what should be the defining criteria for mental illness. International Academy of Sex Research Joins the Debate: Is Pedophilia a Mental Disorder?
"I gave my lover everything including HIV. I didn't mean to. We made a mistake. Maybe deep down we felt it would be better if we both had it..."The American Journal of Public Health Highlights Risks of Homosexual Practices
The prestigious Journal of the American Public Health Association has devoted a substantial portion of its latest edition (AJPH -- Table of Contents (June 1 2003, 93 [6]).) to the risks associated with homosexual practices.
Most of us think of recruitment as the seduction of an innocent, perhaps emotionally vulnerable child or youth by an older sexual predator. Consider, however, that even homosexual experimentation between peers can be evidence of "gay" recruitment. Recruitment is a mental and emotional process that begins long before the first sexual act occurs. In the truest sense of the word, "gay" recruitment is a process of changing someone's attitude about sexuality, rendering him or her more likely to take that first step into the "gay" lifestyle. In some cases, recruitment emboldens a person to initiate a homosexual contact, in others it simply makes the person more susceptible to being seduced. In the relationship between recruitment and seduction we are not necessarily talking about pedophilia (adult/child sex), yet the process of "gay" recruitment is very similar to a tactic of pedophiles that psychologists call "grooming." In "grooming," an adult sexual predator will sometimes spend years cultivating a relationship with a child, leading him or her into a sexual relationship only after the child has been thoroughly emotionally and mentally prepared. "Gay" recruitment is like "grooming," but it doesn't only occur on a one-to-one basis. The most insidious "gay" recruitment is being conducted by "gay" propagandists as a nationwide marketing and public relations campaign. In this campaign, all of our children are being "groomed" at the same time: their attitudes about homosexuality are being changed by one-sided, pro-"gay" propaganda in public education, in television programming, in movies, in music, in advertising, and in every other attitude-shaping institution influenced by "gay" activists. I'm sorry, I don't believe all of the allegations here. I volunteered for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and EVERY volunteer is, after extensive screening, introduced to the child and the parent(s) or guardian in a public, group setting. All parties involved must be comfortable with the arrangement. If not, a new "match" is attempted.
To say that these kids are being matched up without parental notification - to ANYONE, gay or straight - is highly unlikely, and in my opinion a fabrication.
Read the article:
we learned that some of BBBSA's school-based mentoring programs were pairing students with open homosexual mentors
This is just another homophobic attempt to prevent sensitive men from gaining access to clean, fresh, young meat.
I agree. While I understand how someone could have some legitimate concerns, it seems that Focus on the Family's sole focus lately has been to ostracize and stigmatize homosexuals.
I think this is just another specious and opportunistic campaign of misinformation.
Then there's the statement that BBBSA doesn't pair up children with a mentor of the opposite sex. Well, I'm sure sexual impropriety is part of the concern, but I think there's a more significant reason for that. It would be difficult for a troubled boy to learn to be a fine young man when his mentor is a woman! Duh.
Don't confuse us with the facts; we want to believe our homophobic propaganda.
Improve education by freeing schools from politics. Separate ...
As Americans reduce government involvement in education, we can expect these changes:
  1. Parents will be reinforced. Parents will send their children to schools where they are supported by teachers, not undermined. Parents will have a variety to choose from just as they have variety in restaurants, magazines, and churches. From Baptist to Buddhist, from Catholic to Calvinist, from Montessori to Muslim, from Progressive to Classical, from Child-centered to Direct Instruction, from Phonics to Whole Language, from sports to arts, and more, parents will choose schools where teachers support their values.
  2. Children will be safer. Independent schools don't tolerate violence because parents can easily move their children. Schools that are unsafe will either end the danger or go out of business.
  3. The poor will have access to better education. Americans donate over $175 billion per year to charities. To make sure that all 15 million low- and moderate-income children have access to better schools than today, private scholarships need to expand to $20-25 billion per year. This is prudently predictable, given the $300 billion tax cut resulting from School Liberation. Also, schooling will cost less. See below.
  4. Individualization. No longer will a child have to "adapt to the herd" in learning style. Schools and teachers can specialize to meet learning preferences -- a hands-on school for action-based learners, a literature-based unit study school for voracious readers, and schools that embed learning in music for auditory learners.
  5. Schools will be smaller. As we recover from the gigantism of government, schools will become scaled to fit children, not bureaucracies. Elementary schools will often be 100-200 children, not the 500-2000 we see today. Within the first year of School Liberation, the number of schools in the U.S. will likely increase from today's 110,000 to 500,000 or more.
  6. Teachers will be happier. Teachers will be able to do what attracted them to teaching -- concentrate on children, not bureaucratic rules. Principals and teachers who share worldview and education philosophy will start their own schools, sometimes renting space in former government school buildings. Like physicians and other professionals, they'll hire assistants and business managers, not superintendents. Parents will be the customers, not politicians: No more whims from the latest "Education Governor."
  7. Less time. In the past, eighth-grade graduates mastered subject material beyond that covered by most of today's high schools. Removing government involvement means that schools will be free to use time more efficiently. Students can learn more in fewer hours and fewer years.
  8. Good schooling will be much less expensive. Most government schools cost $4,000-$10,000/pupil/year. Freedom to innovate and compete will reduce costs by half. Better use of technology may reduce costs another 10 to 20 percent. Further, by blending campus-, cooperative-, home-, and self-schooling, education in urban centers -- much better than today's government schools -- will be available as low as $1,500-$2,000 per year.
  9. Private credentialing and accreditation will help assure high quality. Private credentialing services will prevail like those for Montessori and Waldorf teachers today. Private school accreditation services, such as A.C.S.I and A.A.C.S., will expand to help assure parents that schools are meeting their stated objectives.
  10. The economy will benefit. Businesses will become more efficient when graduates are better educated. Students with specific career goals can match with like-minded businesses for apprenticeships and work-study programs.
And equally difficult if his mentor is a homo.
Your opinion based on the area that you worked in. Even if there is a nationwide standard, we all know that sometimes those standards do not get followed. It's quite possible this letter is a follow up to a verbal 'reminder'.
Oh yeah....like the boy scouts and young assistants in the Catholic Churches.....young boys and girls needing special bonding with HEALTHY ADULTS really present a tastey buffet table for homosexual pedophiles who yearn for the innocent. (Easiest way to get over your own embarrassment and shame, as a homosexual, is to totally dominate, and who easier to prey upon than children?)
I don't know about gay men, but I know that lesbians do a lot of cunnilingus.
As a matter of fact, many of the lesbian-porn consumers are straight male; it seems that two women playing with each other is an obligatory scene in any adult movie targeted to straight males.
Not only that, last time I went to a strip club, many of the girls were making out with each other for the benefit of the male clientele; the same thing happened every time I went to spring break.
It seems that a lot of straight males are bad role models who enjoy watching perverted sex, right?
I'm curious which you think would be a worse mentor: a homosexual or the neighborhood gang leader/crack dealer?
I'm not being inflammatory. I'm genuinely curious about your answer to this question.
"I'm curious which you think would be a worse mentor: a homosexual or the neighborhood gang leader/crack dealer?"
For my child, I would not want, nor would I accept either. If there aren't enough upstanding heteros to support this organization, then it would be of no help to me.
