Concealed Weapons Bill: Public Hearing Tuesday

Permit To Carry Would Cost $75
POSTED: 2:32 p.m. CDT September 8, 2003
UPDATED: 3:43 p.m. CDT September 8, 2003

MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin's ban on carrying concealed weapons is front and center this week in Madison.

Wisconsin is one of six states where it's illegal to pack heat.

SURVEY

Do you support a bill to allow citizens to carry concealed weapons?

Supporters of a bill to allow citizens to carry concealed weapons say it would deter crime because criminals wouldn't know who's armed, but opponents say more weapons will compromise safety. The bill comes up for a public hearing Tuesday at the Capitol.

Wisconsin residents 21 and older who have completed a firearms safety course would be allowed to carry concealed weapons. They would need a $75 permit from the local sheriff's department.

Republicans Scott Gunderson, of Waterford, and Sen. Dave Zien, of Eau Claire, are the main authors of the measure.

If Wisconsin gets this passed, I just don’t know if I can go on living south of the border.
