Look at this scenario, which is repeated constantly all over the United States near big cities:
A bunch of people want to live in a nice suburb. They save their money, landscape their houses, work to improve the local schools, and otherwise create a satisfying lifestyle. But then local government insists that the community build "affordable housing," which is a code word for "we need somewhere to stash the poor people." The new residents, many of whom don't come from nations that teach them home-maintenance skills, trash the neighborhood, leave cars up on blocks in the yard, let their kids vandalize the pool and community center, bring in their criminal friends from the inner city, and have broken-beer-bottle fights in front of their houses at 3 in the morning. The schools are filled with ill-disciplined kids and the quality of education goes downhill.
Pretty soon the original residents don't want to live there and move out to the sticks. But once out in the sticks they don't like dealing with a well and septic tanks, so they agitate for sewer lines. They don't like having to depend on propane or oil delivery, so they nag government to provide them with gas lines. They don't like having to drive ten miles to get to the Jiffy-Lube or Blockbuster, so they want new business development. They don't like the smell of fertilizer, so they pressure the farmers unmercifully. And before you know it you have another suburb out there in what was only recently farmland, and then the immigrants/poor folks come in again, and the cycle repeats. Only this time everybody's property taxes are higher in order to pay for the new schools, increased police and fire protection, new gas, water, and sewer lines, increased health care needs, wider roads, etc. etc. etc.
Sprawl happens because nobody wants to live in crowded conditions. Keep immigrants out and there won't be so much crowding; there will be much less need for people to move out to the boondocks and much less need for new construction. Maybe we can save some of the great old architecture we already have in place.
You just described every the 'burbs of every major American city in the United States.
Social engineering marches onward.
1. Neighbors from South American moved in next door to me. Mind, these are purportedly successful professional people; houses in our community are selling for about $500K on quarter-acre lots, so they must have a fairly decent income. Naturally the houses all have garbage disposals and sewer connections as well as weekly recycling pickup and twice-a-week trash pickup.
First they try to start an auto-body business out of their garage. I'm sorry, this is not going to fly. Nobody pays this kind of money for a house only to live next door to a yardful rusted-out truck corpses. This bit of clueless entrepreneurship gets shut down.
Next I notice this god-awful stench coming from the strip of woods behind our houses. It's so bad I can't even use my patio. There are also horrible snarls and screams from animals fighting back there every night. I assume a deer has died in there and go back to investigate. Instead of a deer, I find a pile of black goo that hums like an overflight of C5As. It seems our successful professional South American neighbors are eating chicken three or four nights a week, and each time they discard the skin and guts, put it neatly in the little Perdue styrofoam tray it came in, and throw the mess and the bloody tray back in the woods instead of putting the guts down the disposal and the tray in the trash. There is an enormous mound of this stuff decomposing back there, and it's completely black with flies; you can hear it from thirty feet away (which is about the distance to my back yard). The lovely neighbors don't understand why this is a problem.
2. Another set of neighbors are hanging the skinned carcasses of goats on their decks. Again, the flies and the smell are unbearable, and again, these new residents of America just don't see what the problem is. They tell us that we are disrespecting their cultural traditions and their sophisticated national cuisine.
And more prosperous. Cuban Americans have incomes higher than the national average. While they may be concentrated in South Florida, I can tell you that they are leaving their older neighborhoods in favor of more suburban areas in that region of the country.
I lived among many Latin American professionals (many of whom were whiter than me ;-)) in Miami and never had any problems. The Chinese, on the other hand, tend to come here with little knowledge of American sanitation practices. Every Chinese area in New York, no matter how prosperous, is littered with trash.
Like I should talk. My ancestors when they came to this country also littered like crazy and urinated in the street. Too many Americans don't realize that our obsession with Hygeine and cleanliness is the exception, not the rule in the rest of the world.
heheh... and I can tell you that Cubans own South Florida.
Moving to the 'burbs - LOL - they OWN the 'burbs!
As do I (a wonderful girl - soon to be mother).
And her family is (likewise) furious over the flood of (illegal) immigrants coming in from Mexico.
The United States is the laughing stock of the world when it comes to BORDER CONTROL!

South Miami is one of the wealthiest regions of the United States.

BTW: My Colombian and Venezuelan friends are conservative, being that most are fleeing leftist guerillas in the former and a leftist jackass dictator (Chavez) in the latter. The "Condo Communists" may be holding strong in Boca Raton, but the wall will fall.

Let's just hope there will be a country left for them to grow up in with the same living standards that we did.
Much of the "Anti-sprawl" activities aren't about the enviroment, they are about racial and urban politics, a desperate attempt to reverse "white-flight", recapture the revenues lost by that flight, and make multiculturalism work, at bayonet point if necessary. Think of it as busing for adults and whole families done under the pretext of enviromentalism. Almost all of the people pushing for anti-sprawl are white leftists and liberal politicians who understand that they can only juggle so long before they are permanently replaced by a non-white elite in these cities and that their gravy train is grinding to a halt. When that happens most of them will move out to new territory and take over there to begin the whole process anew. And, amazingly, the locals will let them instead of tarring and feathering them and riding them out of town on a rail.
