VINELAND -- When Kyle Brandon arrived for classes at Cumberland County College one night last spring, he didn't expect to come face to face with dozens of members of the Boy Scouts of America.

But that's what happened when Brandon, a 36-year-old openly gay Vineland resident, walked into the college's Frank Guaracini Jr. Fine and Performing Arts Center. The stress of witnessing the start of a Boy Scouts award ceremony for the college's president, Kenneth Ender, was so intense that he broke out in cold sweat, Brandon said.

Gays-in-the-military was a huge hot-button issue too….I mean….right up until 9/11. I think that wearing us out on issues such as this is part of their plan -- whatever the heck their plan is.

Brandon also questions how Ender can justify his decision to accept an award on campus from an organization that discriminates against some members of society when the college has diversity and nondiscrimination policies in place.

I'd be the first to say that the Boy Scouts should be capable of being polite no matter what. (One might sympathize with them if they weren't capable of it, under some circumstances.)

But this doesn't say that they did ANYTHING to him! He's just offended that a group that would exclude him was physically present in the same room??? Good GRIEF. Please name one human being on this earth who has not had that experience a zillion times in elementary school! And a quadzillion times more in junior high and high school!

Being excluded from some groups, formally or informally, is NORMAL! Why, Congress hasn't let me in to vote with them ONCE! The US Navy said my nearsightedness was too severe, and THEY excluded me (but I'm still warmly polite toward Navy personnel!) I'm a member of one church and don't you know, other churches don't consider me a member of theirs! I attend one university, but other universities haven't sent me welcome letters. And socially, wow! Half the human race considers me OUTSIDE their gender! Most of the human race sees me as an outsider one way or another.

The best thing that 9/11 did for the military, is the fact that gays are LEAVING when their enlistments are up. There are units hurting for good recruits. Gays and lesbians are not signing up in the numbers that they did before 9/11.

There are also many taking early outs. Maybe we should let the Boy Scouts become a reserve unit of the US Army. Great idea.

I was taught that the act of trying to destroy, confuse to inoperativeness, frighten, or disrupt, was the act of terrorism. Webster's II. dictionary defines terrorism as: the political use of violence or intimidation, and the word terrorize: to control or dominate by violence or intimidation.
