SAN DIEGO (Sept. 5) - A 14-year-old boy jogging with his high school cross-country team was shot and killed in an ambush by his father, who later killed himself after a standoff with police, authorities said.
The shooter stepped out from behind a parked van Thursday afternoon to fire the first several shots at the boy, then reloaded his pistol and fired again as pedestrians and the running team fled, witnesses and police said.
No one else was injured, but the gunman, identified by police as the boy's father, fled by car into a home about a mile away where he spent nearly 10 hours in on-and-off negotiations with police.
The 53-year-old man, whose name was not released, shot himself once in the head at 1:40 a.m. Friday and was pronounced dead, said Sgt. Richard Nemetz of the San Diego Police Department.
Witnesses and neighbors identified the 14-year-old victim as Evan Nash.
About a dozen members of the Point Loma High School cross-country team were jogging about 3 p.m. in the quiet community of Ocean Park when the shooting occurred, police said.
Two neighboring schools were briefly locked down and grief counselors were called to the Point Loma campus.
Police were investigating the domestic circumstances of the victim's father. There were reports the victim's parents had separated and were dealing with ``custody issues,'' police spokesman Dave Cohen said.
oh he is today is the first day of the rest of eternity in hell for this pr*ck
the running team fled,
I couldn't pass up that line though.
He wanted to punish the mother/ex-wife. Prayers for that poor child.
Now that's good advice...
True. I think the only function served by a restraining order is lagniappe, or something to pile on top of all the other charges when a perp breaks the law.
Police: Father runs over own daughter By Barb Ickes
COLONA, Ill. Prosecutors are upgrading charges against a Colona man who struck his daughter with his car, fled the accident scene and was arrested an hour later on drunken-driving charges, police said Thursday.
Colona Police Chief Ernie Manrrique said Bobby McCullough, 45, initially was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, or DUI, and leaving the scene of an injury accident. He posted bond and was released from police custody not long after the 9:10 p.m. Wednesday accident.
But the states attorneys office today decided to upgrade the charge to aggravated DUI, which is a Class 4 felony, the police chief said.
The witness
McCullough is accused of driving a 1986 Buick Century that struck his 19-year-old daughter, Mindy McCullough, as she walked with a friend along 9th Avenue and 3rd Street. Coincidentally, Colona police officer Mike Swemline also was driving in the area and witnessed the accident.
He had just driven past the two girls, looked in his rear-view mirror and saw her actually being struck and being thrown onto the top of the vehicle, Manrrique said. As they were discussing the make and model of the vehicle, Mindys friend said, Actually, Mindys parents have a car just like that.
When the girls father was notified of the accident by police, he arrived at the scene in his 1986 Buick Century, which, police said, bore fresh dents from the mishap.
You can actually see where it happened on the car, the police chief said. At first, he claimed the damage was old damage, but about an hour later he admitted he hit his daughter.
The injuries
The girl suffered two broken legs and a head injury, the police chief said. Her fathers blood-alcohol level was .08, he said, which is precisely the legal limit for driving under the influence.
Its unbelievable to just leave like that when its anybody, regardless of it being his daughter, Manrrique said. But it is unbelievable, isnt it?
He said Bobby McCullough will be notified of the upgraded charges when he is located by police, who believe he drove to Peoria, Ill., where his daughter was being treated for her injuries Thursday at St. Francis Medical Center. Her condition was not available.
Manrrique said Bobby McCullough has an extensive police record.
Just damn.
