hospice is for people that are near death or going to die in several months...
perhaps hospice was not the best choice...
I know hospice here demands that the patient be a "no code" and they do not encourage feeding tubes or other extensions of life, if that life is going to be ending soon anyway...
their mission is to make a dying experience a peaceful one, one without pain or torment or noise or stress of any kind...so while they believe in all that, they may not believe in any rehab. except for comfort....
I have hated this story from day one...
I am so suspicious of this husband, but he has gotten away with it so far....
if only life was fair....

Here, the residents must be re-certified every six months but 10 years? I wouldn't call that terminal. You sure she has been on hospice the entire time?

CNN picked up the story and actually did a GREAT job on it!! Maybe this will get more media outlets doing research and following up on it!

You may find it hard to believe, but look up the other threads on FR on this woman and you'll start to believe. This whole thing is TRAGIC! The Michael Schiavo slimeball can't be allowed to get away with this!

From what I read, the nurses were all very intimidated by Mr Schiavo and feared losing their jobs. I've read one of the nurses entire statement and she said he was physically intimidating.

To: honeygrl
Yeah, maybe. It's just hard to understand though. Nurses are in high demand and work isn't a problem. Most won't take this kind of crap. CNAs , I could see feeling this way though. I hate it but in Texas anyone can call the hotline annonomously and all complaints are investigated each time. I have looked at it as more of an annoyance than help but maybe it does occasionally have a purpose.

My heart breaks for poor Terri.
Please Dear God, let her live a little longer, she has suffered too much for so long. And bless her parents and sister. They need strengh to bear all the bad news, and to continue fighting for Terri.
Honey, please put me on the ping list.
Thanks.

I think it would be along the lines of deathbed confession. Not only that, but we don't know what has happened in their lives. Possibly they are more financially secure and don't need to keep quiet for a job, or they have become a Christian and want to confess and receive absolution....there are a lot of reasons. And not one of them has said they "suddenly remember" - they simply decided to come forward.
I read in a well-cited interview that one of them said it looked like Terri was actually going to be killed and that she just couldn't live with that. Again, that whole 'deathbed confession' mentality.
Whatever the case, they certainly have raised eyebrows and ire.

There was a GAL at one time, Richard Pearse, who was suddenly dismissed after filing his report in which he stated that it was his opinion that 1. Michael Schiavo was not a suitable guardian due to his standing to gain financially and 2. The possibility of rehabilitation for Terri was too great to advocate any kind of Exit Protocol.

GAL?
To: Mo1
The problem is, that while M. Schiavo has done things that are morally reprehensible, he hasn't done anything Judge Greer didn't allow him to do. Terri is not in a Permanent Vegetative State, she is chronicly ill and disabled. The Hospice there isn't even licensed to treat chronicly ill...only disabled. Only terminal. This was noted in an Opertion Restore Trust investigation of the Suncoast Hospice by the Health & Human Services Office of the Inspector General. I've got the .pdf file.
Of 264 cases active in hospice over 210 days when Operation Restore Trust did their review, 176 were not eligible for hospice coverage and for 118 they were unable to conclusively determine their terminal illness.
Compare this to only 78 cases in San Diego in which 37 were ineligible and only 19 for which they were unable to determine terminal illness.
Compare this also to Dallas with only 26 active cases in which 20 were not eligible, and only 2 for which "medical records... were insufficient to conclusively determine a life expectancy of 6 months or less, as required by Medicare.
I'm telling you, something is really fishy at Suncoast.

She hasn't been in hospice the whole time, but certainly long enough to NOT be classified terminal.
