September 3, 2003 -- THE Arab satellite station Al- Jazeera re-launched an English-language Web site Tuesday, five months after hackers brought down its site at the height of the Iraq war. Susi Sirri, news coordinator and spokeswoman, said the site aims "to fill a niche for English speakers who want to get the other side of the story, the Arab perspective."

there's nothing good about hackers interrupting a legitimate web site ... it's pretty hard for me to feel sorry for Al-Jazeera ... they aren't "freedom of speech", they're freedom of Osama and Saddam ...

isn't stopping the spread of propaganda by the enemy normal function of war?

A hacker, John William Racine II, 24, of Norco, Calif., pleaded guilty in June to felony charges of wire fraud and unlawful interception of an electronic communication. He had intercepted e-mail and content from Al-Jazeera and rerouted users to another site showing the American flag and the phrase "Let Freedom Ring."

I hope they give him a medal..

More info on the case:

"Prosecutors allege that Racine obtained a password for Al-Jazeera's Web site by posing as a representative of the station in forged requests faxed to Network Solutions, who handed over the vital information without verifying his identity. "

"The plea agreement, however, contemplates a sentence of three years probation, to include 1,000 hours of community service. Additionally, Racine has agreed to pay a fine of $1,500 and full restitution to the victims of the offenses. It should be noted that the sentence contemplated in the plea agreement will not be binding on the judge that will preside over Racine's case."

The man is a criminal, they should hit him hard. A thousand hours of public service sounds about right, supervised by some gov't agencies.

I disagree. If he obtained the passwords from Al-Jazeera personnel, then they gave him access to their web. It was their responsibility to ensure secutiy of their web site.

Breaking in and guessing at the passwords is different and criminal. He didn't do that. He was invited.

I didn't know they had given him the passwords, the update was posted at the same time as my post. But still, a thousand hours of doing his thing with a license...
