McClintock Key to Democratic Victory in California
Intellectual Conservative.com ^ | 9/2/3 | Bob Chandra

A Democratic plot to boost Tom McClintock’s candidacy at Arnold Schwarzenegger’s expense has recently come to light.

On paper, the recall election should be a cakewalk for California Republicans. A cursory analysis reveals a governor with an approval rating below Richard Nixon at his low point. The only serious Democrat candidate is the state’s uninspiring lieutenant governor, Cruz Bustamante, who unquestioningly followed Governor Davis through his mishaps with the budget and energy crisis. It should be a breeze for Republicans, right? Think again. Democrats are euphoric over Tom McClintock’s intransigence in continuing his long-shot bid for governor. This allows Democrats to divide and conquer their way into office. Democrats are attempting to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and Tom McClintock is an essential part of their game plan.

For starters, Democrats know McClintock cannot win. They know that he has ran for statewide office twice before and lost both times. McClintock’s problem is not so much that he’s unknown but that Californians know about him and have rejected his candidacy time and again. Knowing this, a Democrat plot to boost McClintock’s candidacy at Schwarzenegger’s expense has already surfaced. According to the Sacramento Bee’s Daniel Weintraub, “Ever since Cruz Bustamante entered the race, it's been assumed that California's Indian tribes were going to pool their money and do independent expenditures on his behalf, expensive ads that get around the $21,000 limit on contributions. Now I am hearing rumblings that the Indians might think about helping Cruz in a more creative way as well. If they spent, say, $4 million on behalf of state Sen. Tom McClintock, the most conservative Republican in the race, they might pump McClintock's numbers up while hurting Arnold and not harming Cruz a bit. Remember, Cruz needs a split GOP vote to win. That would be one way to get it.” The reliably Democratic Indian tribes, loyal to Bustamante, would essentially throw their weight behind McClintock to chip away at the support of Arnold Schwarzenegger, the GOP front-runner. The Democrat strategy with regard to Tom McClintock is: “If you know you can beat ‘em, join ‘em.”

McClintock is unfazed by this conniving scheme and is more than happy to play along. His actions suggest that he’s willing to make allies with loyal Democratic groups under the logic, the enemy of my enemy (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is my friend. On August 28th, McClintock and Bustamante went together before the California Nations Indian Gaming Association to pledge their support. Needless to say, money will follow. Whether McClintock knows it or not, he’s being used by the Left. If Democrat allies can keep McClintock in the game, they can put a cap on Arnold’s support. A recent Los Angeles Times poll shows Bustamante with 35% of the vote and McClintock with 12%. The poll indicates that McClintock will lose decisively but more importantly, his vote will ensure that GOP front-runner Schwarzenegger loses as well.

It doesn’t have to be this way. McClintock could see the light and do what’s best for the party – as Bill Simon did by bowing out of the race. Other than his new Democratic support, the picture continues to grow bleaker for McClintock. The Washington Post and Sacramento Bee are reporting that there will be a record turnout for the recall election. This invalidates the early calculus by McClintock supporters - that in a low turnout election, grassroots could carry the day. Further, the base is growing more familiar with Schwarzenegger’s conservatism – Arnold came out against partial-birth abortion, against gay marriage, and for a constitutional spending cap.

There comes a time when personal ambition must be set aside and self-affirming but false justifications for one’s candidacy need to be reexamined. If McClintock stays in the California Senate, and assuming Arnold wins the governorship, he and Arnold could play the good-cop/bad-cop routine to perfection, mirroring President Bush and Tom Delay’s efforts at the national level. Additionally, McClintock may be well positioned to challenge Barbara Boxer in next year’s US Senate race. However, if McClintock persists with his spoiler campaign and throws the election to Bustamante, it is doubtful he will have any political capital for a future race.

But assuming things stay the way they are, with McClintock’s help, Bustamante and the Democrats may well pull off an upset of a lifetime on Election Day.

Riordan wouldn't have needed the ultraconservative vote in the general election. Just the way he got elected Mayor in overwhelmingly Democrat Los Angeles, with the support of real Republicans, independents and moderate Democrats, he would have beaten Davis easily.

But the Independents and Dems, couldn't bring themselves to vote for Simon and wouldn't vote for McClintock, even if it were only McC running against Bustamante.

People can ignore reality, play ostrich, but ultimately realisty wins.

As long as CA has the current demographics of 45% Dems, 35% R and the rest Independents of various types, most of whom hate the Republicans, no conservative Republican can get elected dogcatcher for statewide office.

What makes you think Arnold Supporters want to "Keep out" conservatives??

On my behalf, quite the contrary...

I would support Senator McClintock in a heartbeat. I just don't think he can win this race. And I think Arnold can.

Personally, I think McClintock will get out of the race. (If he doesn't, he will lose and his political career will be DEAD! And he knows it.) He will then endorse Arnold and put himelf in line for a NICE position within the party down the road.

The choice is simple for McClintock...He doesn't seem to be in as much denial as some of his supporters.

Back to the point...I don't want to "Keep Out" conservatives and I don't know a single Arnold supporter that does. Not a SINGLE one.

But...

I see a lot of McClintock supporters constantly bashing any Republican who doesn't agree with them. Of that, there is no doubt.

I posted this on another thread:

California taxpaying citizens are in deep crap no matter what the outcome of this election. If Davis is retained, nothing will change and it will be downhill to fiscal collapse, huge tax increases, a stagnating state economy, more business/job loss, and an ever-increasing turd worldization (if I may coin a phrase). The Hollywood elite and the movie industry cannot save California from the economic doldrums.

If Bustamante is elected, nothing will change for the better; he is worse than Davis (if that's possible) and a REAL racist to boot. Although states are not authorized to conduct foreign policy, this clown will throw open the doors to Mexico. The invasion from the south will dramatically transform the California economic landscape; it will mirror the poverty and the incipient violence that comes with it. Parts of San Francisco and Los Angeles already look like exact duplicates of third world ratholes in Mexico, central, and south America. Remember, the motto of La Raza is "For the Race, Everything, for the others, nothing."

If Arnold wins, there will be much fanfare but very little accomplishment as he realizes what a scummy bunch of RAT-bastards he has to deal with in the California legislature. Those vermin are well practiced and will eat him alive. BY the time they are through, he will have compromised away every idea he ever had.

If by some miracle (and I think that's what it would take) McClintock wins, the legislature will still have to be dealt with. That will be a formidable task; look what the RAT-obstructionists in the US Senate have done to Bush - and consider - they are in the MINORITY in the US Senate. California has nearly a RAT supermajority in BOTH houses; on top of that ALL elected state offices are held by RATs. These vermin will not compromise or relinguish even 1% of their perceived power, even to a veteran streetfighter like Tom McClintock. He will get no help from ANY bureaucracy, ANY state agency. They will do everything they can to stall even the most minor of changes.

The state employees unions (including the spawn of hell, the teachers union)will fight tooth and nail to maintain their stranglehold on the lion's share of state tax revenues. The welfare bureaucracy, the court system, everywhere he turns, there will be another bunch of knawing, mean, rabid, hungry, wild-eyed hysterical liberal/socialist/Marxists demanding "equality", "fairness", the whole lefty, lying litany of BS will pour out like a crap storm.

Still, a true conservative in the governor's office might scare the crap out of the RATs; enough to make them think their political days are numbered - but probably this is just my own fantasy.

I really like what I have seen from McClintock and hope he wins, but I also believe Arnold is a good start for change if he lives up to his promises of promoting business investment & cutting spending, hopefully someone like McClintock will take over the wheel before Arnold has the chance to open the State Treasury to the "Chilrun" :-)

Amen! If Californians want a liberal to keep the status quo--vote either for Arnold or Bustamante, or you could leave Gray Davis in offic. Once again, hopefully, the Californians will get what they "think" they want and exactly what they deserve. WAKE UP!!

Are you trying to tell us that the Dems are paying you to give the advice to McClintock to stay in the race? ;)

If not, they should be.

No. What year is he term-limited-out? (Or maybe I'm confused and he's only up for re-election?)

The nerve of you to say that Arnold isn't a Republican because he doesn't meet your standards.

Guess you are a solid Republican and supported President Bush in 1988 and 1992 along with Dole in 1996 and President G.W. Bush in 2000?

I know I have voted for Republicans my whole life, and I consider Arnold a Republican.

DU and Democrats in general love McNadertock since he will help re-elect Bustamante.
That will be the end of his future Republican career I grantee you. He staying in a race he can't win will show he is a self centered hack. The feelings of the majority about him will be getting worse and worse as well as this goes on.

If McClintock stays in this race he (Along with Bill Simon) will be known as the poltical equivelent of Marcia Clark...

Apparently you haven't been paying attention - Simon already withdrew. And anyway, Schwarzenegger is shooting himself in the foot all by himself by chickening out on debate. If Rnuld loses, it'll be his own doing since his mush-mind obviously can't formulate even the simplest position on the issues. Oh, and don't forget, his brilliant management "business sense" that y'all are hoping for in Kalaughafornia drove Planet Hollywood bust.

McClintock is playing chicken...sometimes people don't survive playing chicken.

I imagine Tom will bail out at the right time, after sufficiently holding Ahnold's feet to a conservative fire.

Let's face it...Tom holds Ahnold's cards.

Am not sure what the results are -- they were on the front page. Maybe Arnold went ahead and someone pulled them?

I am with you -- I sure hope that Arnold pulls in enough votes that he doesn't need the McClintock people because having a Republican in the CA Governor's Mansion would sure help Bush-Cheney in 2004 and the Republican running for Senator as well as others down the ticket!
