Some Rules 72oz. Steak Rule # 1 is to have fun. We really want you to win! The $50 dinner consist of a baked potato, salad, shrimp cocktail, roll, and a 72-ounce top sirloin steak. You must sit at the designated table in our dining room. You may not leave the table for any reason once the contest starts. No one may assist you in any way (such as cutting up your meal). You must complete the dinner in 1 hour (if you can't do the meal in an hour, you ain't going get it done in 2 hours anyway). You may not share your meal even if you don't complete the dinner (like take it back to your table to be shared by any folks you may have invited to cheer you on). If you get sick (its been know to happen) the contest is over, period. You can order the steak cooked anyway you want. We will allow you a sample bite (small) prior to the start of the timer to make sure it is cooked to your satisfaction and the taste meets with your approval. Then we start the timer for one hour. You do not have to eat the fat or gristle (if you can find any), but we must judge this. Again, we want you to win but we do know our meats and will judge accordingly. The contest is just that, a contest. The steak is not offered on our menu as a meal. We do not allow the dinner to be ordered as a meal (unless you want to spend $200). It takes us a little more than a half an hour to cook the steak and it is available 365 days a year from 8:00am to 9:30pm. Enough with the rules! Refer to rule #1 - HAVE FUN!
Of course, when you take the 72oz. challenge at home, you don't have to limit yourself to one hour...and, you can share it with your friends and family. Most importantly, you now gain the bragging rights to say you too have savored the taste of this Texas-sized steak.
The successful 72oz. steak eaters in our restaurant will take home a special limited-edition t-shirt proclaiming their gastronomical feat. So until you are able to visit us in Amarillo, why not have a practice session in your own home? Invite a few friends over, and have a Big Texan party!

Good luck, you'll need it. Amarillo is my hometown. I even worked at the Big Texan steak ranch in my youth. I've heard dozens of stories about those who attempted, succeeded, and failed at the steak challenge.
Sorry I can't offer any strategic tips, but one thing you may want to know before you try. From what I have heard, you may be 'plugged up' for a week afterward.

How to prepare yourself in the weeks and days leading up to the event, etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Make sure your medical insurance is in force and covers you in an eating contest.

Well, I have heard that smoking pot produces the feeling of being hungry, but I wonder if it would actually help when it comes to consuming as much as possible.

"Starve yourself for a few days beforehand?"That is the wrong strategy.Eat like a horse in the days leading up to the contest and burn alot of calories. Eat a large breakfast on the day of the event, really stretch that stomach out. Then eat nothing 'til dinner. Bon Apetite.

I would think that the best thing to do is learn form those who were succesful, so, try being a fast ball pitching, 11 year old grandmother that is a professional wrestler.

The thinner you are, the more room your stomach has to expand in your abdomen. So . . .
1) Lose as much weight as possible before March.
2) In the remaining month or so, stretch your stomach as much as possible once or twice a week by sitting down and stuffing yourself with seven pounds of steak as quickly as possible. In other words, you want to get your stomach used to being stretched to the max.
3) See a shrink because YOU'RE NUTS TO DO THIS! :-)
Actually, I wish you well, RK . . . Give 'em hell.

4 pounds of steak. Eat nothing for on full day... run about 2-3miles... then go eat your steak.

Thanks. I'm ok in the weight department at 170 pounds on a 6'2'' frame. I'll start working my way up in steak size to see how it goes.

What about ordering your steak well done? Wouldn't that cook off some of the fat, and every little bit might help. Do they weigh the slab before or after cooking, I wonder?

I saw a bill board in Houston about this last week. Want some of us freepers that will be in the area to come cheer you on?
To: Rodney King
Are you allowed to throw up during the meal? That would help a lot. It's how the Romans handled their banquets.

Practice chewing. It will make it easier on your gut if all is well-chewed. (And use your knife to cut tiny slices, carefully cut across the grain.)
Practice eating 3-4-pound steaks leading up to the event.
Also, ask yourself WHY?
To: Rodney King
I wasn't entirely serious, but back in my mispent youth, pot induced me to eat amounts I've never been able to eat again. Of course, I was younger and had a much faster metabolism then.
