Some Rules 72oz. Steak

Rule # 1 is to have fun. We really want you to win! The $50 dinner consist of a baked potato, salad, shrimp cocktail, roll, and a 72-ounce top sirloin steak. You must sit at the designated table in our dining room. You may not leave the table for any reason once the contest starts. No one may assist you in any way (such as cutting up your meal). You must complete the dinner in 1 hour (if you can't do the meal in an hour, you ain't going get it done in 2 hours anyway). You may not share your meal even if you don't complete the dinner (like take it back to your table to be shared by any folks you may have invited to cheer you on). If you get sick (its been know to happen) the contest is over, period. You can order the steak cooked anyway you want. We will allow you a sample bite (small) prior to the start of the timer to make sure it is cooked to your satisfaction and the taste meets with your approval. Then we start the timer for one hour. You do not have to eat the fat or gristle (if you can find any), but we must judge this. Again, we want you to win but we do know our meats and will judge accordingly. The contest is just that, a contest. The steak is not offered on our menu as a meal. We do not allow the dinner to be ordered as a meal (unless you want to spend $200). It takes us a little more than a half an hour to cook the steak and it is available 365 days a year from 8:00am to 9:30pm. Enough with the rules! Refer to rule #1 - HAVE FUN!

Of course, when you take the 72oz. challenge at home, you don't have to limit yourself to one hour...and, you can share it with your friends and family. Most importantly, you now gain the bragging rights to say you too have savored the taste of this Texas-sized steak.

72oz Winners Shirt

The successful 72oz. steak eaters in our restaurant will take home a special limited-edition t-shirt proclaiming their gastronomical feat. So until you are able to visit us in Amarillo, why not have a practice session in your own home? Invite a few friends over, and have a Big Texan party!

I know it to work from 2 successful 32 ounce sessions in San Antonio. I hope to go for the 72 ounces the next time I'm down that way in Texas.

Oh yeah - bread expands in your stomach. That's why it's a common trick when you have nothing much to eat to just make something with a lot of bread in it. It tricks you into feeling more full than you actually are.

I'm not sure what strategy can be gleaned from that, but I might try eating the roll last.

no water, the hotdog guys use the water to wash down the buns...

cut the steak into small bites and eat it quickly...

the sides should be used to cleanse the palatte and start on the steak again... pace yourself...

steak first, cutting while chewing and the sides as they come...

good luck...

and when you wipe your mouth spit food back in it to relax a bit but don't get caught...

When you reach the point when you feel you cannot eat another bite just picture the poor starving children of some socialist hell hole. Then imagine the indignation of liberals while you, an American capitalist pig, consume more than your fair share.

The vision of the liberals self-righteous, disgust should be enough to spur you on to greater feats of pleasurable gluttony.

It was honestly the most horrendous display of eating you've ever seen. You could have rebuilt the Bering Straight land bridge with the discarded Alaskan King Crab leg shells. We dented the Atlantic seafood chain, permanently disrupting food chains that had taken millenia to evolve.

LMAO! It's true, pot enhances your appetite. I remember once upon a time eating my dinner at home, then going off with my friends. We ended up at Spires(budget coffee shop chain), where I consumed another entire dinner. Yuck. Even though I haven't indulged in years, I still get a kick out of Cheech and Chong movies :)

Bring your own, very sharp steak blade. Maybe an 8" chef's knife too. This will help you break it down into manageable pieces more quickly.

"But peta loves the ranchers in Amarillo (snicker)"

Yeah, about as much as they love Oprah.

Speaking of PETA, they had up a huge billboard last year which read "Jesus was a vegan". Bad move on their part! Not only is this a very Christian part of Texas, but we are big beef people. Sign didn't last long.

Try a product called Bitters. Made my Underburg.

Here is a description I found online:

Bitters

Bitters are, as their name suggest, a bitter or bittersweet type of spirit made from different herbs, roots and plants. Bitters are used to flavor and add a dry zest to cocktails and cooking. Because of their function as a digestive aid and appetite stimulant bitters are often used in before- and after dinner cocktails (aperitifs and digestifs).

When using bitters in cocktails it is important to be cautious as a little too much can ruin the cocktail. Generally, bitters also have a high alcohol content and should never be used in non-alcoholic drinks.

I know you can buy it at select liquor stores, as that is where I first heard of it.

Was TV reporter in TX. Covered the Big Texan on slow days.

Techniques of winners:

Remember that you have to eat it all, inc. roll, salad.

Get it done at least medium. Easier to chew.

Forget the BS about stomach shrinking if you don't eat. It doesn't.

Empty colon first by taking small dose of laxitive night before but it will them be out of your system by eating time. and take SMALL shot of something to make stomach pass food faster, Milk of Magnesia, etc.

Do it about 4 PM after eating nothing all day.

Pee first, too.

Cut into small pieces to make mouth work easier.

From the above site (info from the head chef):

"First of all, you better cut your meat with the grain -- makes it more tender and less chewy," he said, poking at the big sirloin with a grill fork and tossing steak seasoning on it. "You better eat your potato and all that small stuff first. Don't drink no water. Just fills you up. And better eat fast, man."

Been there, ate the whole thing!

I always eat a big dinner but I had driven a 2 axel van straight through from Los Angeles and was really hungry.

When I got through eating I got back in the truck and drove straight through to Saganaw Michigan.

It was a real challange but if you normally eat real big meals it's not that tough to do.

Of course that was 25 years ago when I was only 40 and had a bigger appitite than I do today.

Been there, done that. My training was to spend 9 straight weeks moving a drilling rig from Galveston to Long Beach, Calif. I was 21 (1970) and by the time I got off that rig all I wanted to do was eat, drink, fight and f......... well never mind.

God has made me a better person since.
