And Parson is a high school teen-ager living in his parent's apartment... How sad, and it must be even more humiliating that he was caught easily by his own ineptitude:

Jeffrey Lee Parson, a senior at Hopkins High School, was arrested without incident by FBI and U.S. Secret Service agents in a raid at 7:20 a.m. at his family's townhouse, FBI Special Agent Paul McCabe said. Gone are the days shown in a murder mystery, when in the final scene a single constable places the suspect under arrest. Now, even non-violent criminals are arrested in raids. The militarization of our police force continues. Did they have air support and snipers during this raid, "just in case"?

I think you need to stop and take a breath. "Without indicent" does not paint the picture that you would like us to believe.

Who is Kevin Mitnick? The picture that emerged after his arrest in Raleigh, N.C. last February was of a 31-year old computer programmer, who had been given a number of chances to get his life together but each time was seduced back to the dark side of the computer world.
Catching Kevin
Legendary cracker Kevin Mitnick had violated one company too many - hacker Tsutomu Shimomura's. The exclusive story of the last hours of Shimomura's quest for justice, as he closes the trap on his prey.
By Tsutomu Shimomura
Kevin Mitnick was a nuisance. For more than 15 years, he broke into computers, looked around, stole things, and then broke into yet more computers. He did little major damage, but his constant visitations became harassing - especially if you tried to catch him. Then he would screw up your phone service, or your private mail, or your credit records, or even your job. Although he was arrested five times for his digital trespassing, Mitnick wouldn't stop.

Nelson allowed Parson to post his bond out of public sight at the U.S. Marshal's
office because of threats made against him.
This @$$hole is lucky he isn't operating in the justice system of the Old West.
If a guy could get hung by the neck for stealing a single horse, the penalty
for hanging up millions of computers and costing the economy about $1 Billion
probably would include some big-league torture before execution.

IMHO three years is too little a price to pay, although that fine of $250,000 seems OK. What I would like is a law that would put these nerds with their total disregard for others in prison for 20 years with no possibility of parole. Judges should have no discretion in their sentencing.
If such an admittedly draconian law existed, these sociopaths perhaps--I emphasize "perhaps"--might think twice before launching a virus, particularly a virus that endangers people's lives. Think of the damage that could be done to hospitals, fire stations, and the like.

Someone a work asked me why these people(?) do this. Because they can and they have no life. And yes 20years sounds about right.

Good articles on Mitnick. This guy is no Mitnick for sure (I do wish the media would stop with the "teen" crap, as if it's somehow the fault of his youth that he did what he did. They are trying to already make excuses for him, he's overweight, a loner, bleh bleh bleh. He's 18, he knew what he was doing, nail his butt to the wall.
As far as Mitnick, I've went to many conferences over the years, and I really get sick of some of the youngster who try to put him on a pedestal. If anything, Tsutomu Shimomura is the one they need to be talking about - he pretty much handed Mitnick his a$$ on a platter, and in the process pointed out a lot of bad computing practices by some very large and prominent companies.

A friend of mine might lose his job over this virus. The virus his his payroll department and sent duplicate checks to the employees. The employees, even though they were told to only cash their current paychecks, cashed both, thus overdrawing the company's account by MILLIONS.
I will personally go ring this kid's chubby neck.

This guy is no Mitnick for sure Mitnick outright 'stole' information and manuals, suckered and conned passwords and access rights out of office personnel, impersonated service workers and in one case law enforcement and literally combed through the trash of his likely targets - these guys are no more than 'script kiddies' who have probably just taken previous viri they have received and reverse engineered them ...
