Girl Kicked Out Of School For Wearing Muslim Scarf Thu Aug 28, 6:33 PM ET

A local teen was about to enter her senior year at South Euclid's Regina Catholic High School but she got kicked out because of her Muslim headscarf.

NewsChannel5's Joe Pagonakis reported that Amal Jamal, 17, was told that wearing the headpiece to class is in direct violation of the uniform dress code.

The school dress code specifically states that students are not allowed to wear hats, head wraps or bandannas. School officials said they would not make an exception for the teen.

So far, the student and the school have not been able to reach a compromise.

Amal's family has made no official comment on the situation, but has hired an attorney.

Many people think the school should re-examine the situation.

A similar incident occurred recently at Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills, Ohio. There was a big debate over whether a boy could wear a turban to class, but the school ended up allowing him to do so.

Regina officials have not yet release an official response.

Because Regina is a private school, it can lawfully enforce any dress code it wants to, NewsChannel5 reported.

"Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Council on American Islamic Relations in Washington, DC, said he knew of no other American private school dismissing a Muslim girl in this way. "It's just ridiculous," he said. "You have a religious school denying a student the right to her religious belief."

Uh, Ibrahim...it's a private CATHOLIC school. Send her to public school, home school her or put together a Muslim school.

The school hasn't denied her the right to her religious belief at all; the school doesn't owe her the "right" to violate school rules at a private institution where she specifically has agreed to follow them.

You're exactly right, Thoro. I went 12 years to schools run by the IHM nuns in Detroit. My aunt was a big shot in the order, and all the nuns knew each other. When I got in trouble, they'd call my aunt, who would in turn call my mother, and when I got home I would get in trouble all over again. As a senior, I popped into the boys room for a quick smoke. Mother Superior's superior sense of smell alerted her and she came barging in and dragged me back to her office by the ear and called my aunt, triggering the chain reaction.

I would rather have a tax credit or deduction for parents who private school (as they pay public school taxes yet do not consume the public school resources).

There is a problem with this approach too. Childless couples, singles and people with grown children don't consume public school resources. They don't get a tax break either. If we can't extend a tax break to every person who does not consume public school resources, then it is not reasonable to extend the same to those who opt for private school. The reasonable approach would be to assess parents of children who attend the public school or private school for the cost of educating the children. When the education is complete, the costs go away. That would also force the "public" schools to compete on a quality basis or lose business.

The socialists will never permit the burden to fall on the actual consumers of a given service. They insist on taxing everyone...and especially "the rich" as punishment for their success and productivity.

Some more trouble-makers enroll their brat in a *private catholic school* and then whine about their religion etc.

They have no rights. It's a private school and they can enforce any dress/behavior code they wish.

There is normally a waiting line to get in, the Franciscians running them have little patience with that sort of stuff and just say, "You've been sent down. Next, please." :)

We're not Catholic and we put both of our girls into Catholic schools. We followed the rules, and were treated very well by the administrators and teachers, and our kids took part in many religious activities. And our daughters turned out great, with straight-A grades. Why is it that Muslims are trouble-makers?

Religious institutions are free to discriminate, until and unless they decide to become public accomodations open to all.

But they're not "open to all". The Catholic elementary school that my daughter goes to admits children in this order: returning students, siblings of enrolled students, new Catholic students, and if there are any slots left, new non-Catholic students. ALL new students must pass an entrance exam and not have been a behaviour problem in their previous school.

There are very few non-Catholic students because there are rarely any slots left.

And the dress code states that hats are never allowed on campus.

This is EXACTLY the reason that we never want school vouchers approved. Vouchers would be treated as if the money was contributed by taxpayers. The ACLU would force "separation of church and state" in any private school that accepts vouchers. In like manner, the states would force private schools to accept all applicants as a condition of receiving "public" money. The quality of private schools would be destroyed. There are ALWAYS strings attached to accepting government money.

Bingo. This should be better understood by those who want vouchers or other government help. Rather than raise the level of all schools, it might bring them all down to being government schools.
