At least 13 vehicles vandalized in city's West End

Talk about a rude awakening.

Sharon Messitt rubbed the sleep from her eyes yesterday morning to find that the two left tires of her Nissan Xterra had been slashed, draining all the air from them.

The car was still parked in front of her house by late morning, tilted toward its left side, as she waited for police to arrive.

Messitt and her family moved to Richmond from Northern Virginia a week ago and picked the 4600 block of Stuart Avenue because it was quiet and crime-free.

But sometime overnight, the tires of at least 13 sport utility vehicles in and around the 4600 and 4700 blocks of Stuart and Hanover avenues in the West End were slashed. More SUVs may be damaged but not yet reported to police.

Tow companies circled the streets all day yesterday, hauling away the undriveable vehicles.

Most of the SUVs had only one damaged tire, but some had two. Some of the SUVs had paint damage from a sharp object, as did a few small cars parked along the streets.

But no tires of cars, trucks or minivans in the area were slashed - only SUVs were targeted.

The vandalism left many people stranded at home without transportation to work.....

I have had the same thought. Sadly, it is bound to happen. I would remind folks that when logging was the bete noir du jour that placing steel spikes in trees to cause chain sawing accidents was common.

Similar mass vandalism happened in an apartment complex where I lived several years ago. Two or more tires on each vehicle had 3" nails propped up behind them. Tail pipes were stuffed with beer bottles and potatoes.

I may be reading you wrong, but should I find a person or persons slashing my tires I may react in such a way that they would never slash anymore tires!

There was a similar incident of SUV vandalism in Richmond last year. Must be an ELF contingent there.
