The Truth About What's Happening In Iraq
boblonsberry.com ^ | 8/28/03 | Bob Lonsberry

Posted on 08/28/2003 6:23:09 AM PDT by shortstop

The war in Iraq isn’t being lost in Baghdad. It’s being lost in America.

In Iraq, it’s going quite well. In America, we’re too stupid to realize that.

So let me explain.

These idiots on the news who count each fatality from the announced end of major fighting are doing more to hurt the cause than all the suicide bombers in Baghdad. One uses explosives and the other uses lies.

The kind of lies that are told by diversion and distortion.

The simple fact is that of course we have sustained more casualties since the actual battle stopped. On the battlefield, they were on our turf. In Baghdad, we are on their turf.

We are a conventional military. Lots of tanks and troops and nobody can stand up to us. Rolling over the Iraqi military, we were in our element.

But in the chicken-crap terrorist world of shoot and run, the jihad boys are in their element.

When we were in a position of advantage our casualties were lower than they are when we are in a position of disadvantage.

So, naturally, we continue to take casualties.

Does that mean we’re losing?

Only if you need a blow dryer and a TelePrompTer to do your job.

I would point out that during the conquest of Iraq, we took over a nation, advanced hundreds of miles into enemy territory, toppled a military numbering in the hundreds of thousands, overthrew a government, took control of a good chunk of the world’s oil supply and put vast amounts of our power on the ground in somebody else’s country.

On the other hand, in their guerilla war, the jihad boys have accomplished not a freaking thing.

We still own the nation, we still own the oil, we’re still in charge, they’re still out of power, we still operate freely a long way from home.

They’re like a dog chasing a car. Lots of noise, plenty of bravado, not a damn bit of difference.

So the daily television score of who died when means nothing, except as a needless insult to the families of brave Americans 100 times more noble than the pretty boys on TV.

Here’s another lie: There is no link between Iraq and terrorism.

In fact, the war with Iraq is one of our most important tools in protecting America from terrorists.

Here’s how: Before we went into Iraq, the target of international Muslim terrorism was American civilians in the United States. Since we went into Iraq, the target of international Muslim terrorism has been American servicemen in Iraq.

Good.

More than good. Wonderful.

Thousands of these jihad boys, all coked up on their gutter religion, have streamed into Iraq to be martyrs against the infidels.

Good. The more the merrier.

On September 11 they attacked us where we were weak. Now we’ve tricked them into attacking us where we are strong.

The idiots.

Think about it. Their objective was to attack women and children, businesspeople and flight attendants, in our homeland.

So we changed the venue.

We started breaking the furniture in their neighborhood.

Now all the little Osamas are sneaking into Iraq to take on G.I. Joe.

You pick: Do you want them attacking unarmed citizens in America, or trained and equipped soldiers in Iraq?

Personally, I like our odds now a lot better.

Personally, I think it’s worthwhile and successful. In every battle there are casualties, even in a battle like this. That is to be accepted and understood.

Two facts that escape the self-appointed gods of the media.

Many have died and more will do the same. But each will have sacrificed to directly protect the United States of America and its people. There is a direct link between Iraq and terrorism against America.

The link: As long as we tie the savages up in Iraq, they won’t be coming after our families back home.

Score that a win.

And anybody who says different doesn’t know his head from a hole in the ground.

I'm having a current "debate" with Freeper Austin Willard Wright about the number of US and allied soldiers who died in post-war Germany.

It is very artificial to declare a war or a campaign to be "over" once the major objective has been achieved.

The current situation in Iraq is not "Peace" and it is not "Post War". The current situation in Iraq is a classic case of "Mopping Up".

"Mopping Up" is never easy and it is never glamorous. It is, however, a nasty reality of warfare.

The American news media needs to get some degree of historical perspective but that, I'm afraid, it totally beyond their capabilities.

Bush made the case that Iraq and Bin laden had a connection and if we didnt invade, Iraq might do something really bad to us.

I'd really and truly love for you to produce a Presidential quote backing up this one. :-) Pretty please?

You are correct that this is more a mopping up campaign and we haven't even hit the "post war" phase yet.

Imagine that-after they celebrated VE Day and they were still killing our soldiers? The press doesn't miss an opportunity to slam President Bush with '__ deaths since Mr. Bush declared major combat over', yet they were also the ones who kept saying to the administration 'when is he going to declare victory?'. Leave it to the press. They are ba**ards.

Every terrorist our troops kill in Iraq is a terrorist that cannot kill innocent Americans here or abroad. Do we lose troops? Yeah, and while I hate that, I hate what happened on 9/11 a lot more.

And something that folks like John never seem to get is that an incredibly large majority of the volunteers (dodging bullets, suffering from heat exhaustion, and putting up with a petty media) over in Iraq share this exact same feeling.

You're welcome Bengal Tiger. 10/25/03 - Baton Rogue, Louisiana. It is not an invasion I look forward to. That old pointy thing bounces every which way. I am glad that we play every year now.

When I was a kid, I used to pick up 870AM out of NewOrleans on my transistor radio. I still remember Billy Cannon's punt return to beat Ol' Miss - was it '58/'59? I loved to listen to those LSU games back then.

1958! The ONLY year we won the National Championship. With internet streaming, I can listen to all their games right here in Kalifornie. My wife and I are going to drive down to Tucson, AZ for our game against the Wildcats . . . talk about enemy territory.

FWIW, I have always rooted for WarEagles when they played that school with a "red elephant" as a mascot. Hmmm . . . can't think of their name? ;^)

Name of Big Al. They might want to consider changing it to Big Bam in light of Al Gore and Al Franken.;-)

Internet streaming… sure beats the heck out of my old transistor. My cousin is stationed (U.S. Navy) in California, and he loves listening to the AU games. Good luck in Tuscon - and throughout the season - except 10/25. BTW, I really like Coach Saban. Y'all have a keeper.

And you are in serious denial that for one second these volunteers or their parents would advocate, let alone designate as 'good', a policy of having American solidiers provide targets for terrorists.

The point of this forum is to disect the article at hand, not bring every ounce of ideological baggage from thread to thread. In so doing, a common voice emerges.

If you think this author, who no doubt knows nobody in the Middle East frontlines let alone has a child, is a friend and me an ignorant anti-America whatever, fine. Doesn't bother me, but I do sure get a glimpse at the effects of the Kool-Aid you're drinking.

One Todd Beamer is worth 100,000 CIA/NSA/DEA/FBI/INS/DoD paper shufflers.

The National Anthem? Uh-boy, the last vestiges of a scoundrel indeed.

Yeah, 9/11.

How many resignations, firings, pension strippings, criminal trials for incompetence, tar and featherings... have occured as a result of the worst example of government incompetence in our nation's history?

And you herald them as doing a great job? Whatever.

Thats akin to calling a 'brilliant strategy' having American solidiers be targets for terrorists so we can all still watch Friends and have cheap gas.

If that's what were occurring, you'd probably be right. Fortunately for most of us that's not what's happening, although you're trying your darnedest to make it sound that way.

Utterly ridiculous, and I have a very high regard for Todd Beamer's bravery that day.
