This, friends, is the point.

Arnold gets elected. He implements Republican FISCAL policies. Hopefully his policies are *successful*, and more people in CA start realizing that Republicans aren't so bad and we really do know what we're doing. Arnold is a way of getting future Republican successes, but ONLY IF we support him. Otherwise, forget it--Bustamante becomes Governor, and the cycle repeats again.

You people that have this "all or nothing" mentality are, to be blunt, the problem. This is *California* we're speaking of, not Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, or Alabama. It's not even *Pennsylvania*, not by a long shot, and I should know since I live here. You'll never get a real conservative elected there in this day and age. Spout off about Reagan all you want; our culture, sensibilities, and most importantly *demographics* were different then. Everyone knows that playing to race sells, and you know darn well Bustamante will play it to the hilt. His strategy from day one is "Hispanic boy does good" and the Hispanic media is 110% behind him. If you want *any* Republican policies in California you have Arnold or nothing at all. If Bustamante gets elected and even does a halfway decent job, you can forget about getting him out next time.

But who knows, maybe I'm just an idiot and don't know what I'm talking about. I've only seen two different black men (Wilson Goode and John Street) run for mayor of Philadelphia and pick up 97%-99% of the black vote. You think Bustamante doesn't think playing to race is a winning strategy?

So, how do you explain the part of his answer where he talks about taking speed and lost muscle tone? How does that support your claims that he lied about taking drugs?

Not at all, it's just getting interesting. I was just over at a Religion thread where what was being discussed, in girls magazines such as Glamour, was abortuaries offering girls the opportunity to write little valentines to their aborted fetuses, and, for the Catholic girls, holy water to baptize their aborted fetuses: this was being heralded as cute and poetic! And yes, this is where we as a culture find ourselves: Our girls are being remade into sluts, our boys their studs, all of them lured to explore homosexuality, and we debating a gubentorial candidate for whom morality is inconveneint. There's nothing silly at all about demanding the highest in moral accountability from our leaders. V's wife.

I have every right to bag on the weakminded that I feel are trying to return this country to some bizarre puritanical place. I reject that thought, and I reject you as an example of a conservative. The way you seek division, the deceitful tactics you use, your own 'loudmouth', make me think you are the liberal, playing the devil's advocate. I'd rather have an honest liberal (don't worry, there is no such thing), than a neo-puritan.

My morals are alot different now than they were in 1977. However, I did not do some of the things he refers to.

I did not read the article but I get the drift. All I can say is I was pretty naughty in the 70s myself.

During this same time I was living with a guy whose father was a congressman who died in office. His mother than took over his father's seat and was re-elected several times. His grandfather and grandmother were both former US Senators due to the same situation(Grandfather Senator died and Grandmother took over seat). Let me just say this guy did all the naughty stuff I was doing but did it secretly because he intended to run for office one day.

My point, other than psuedo-name-dropping, is that professional politicians behave much differently than folks on an adventure. I really don't think there is anything related to a history of sexual promiscuity and drug use that could hurt a candidate, especially in California. It could actually help.

In 1977 I was dating a body builder and knew all of this, pretty much (except the salacious story, of course). But the pot and steroids? Big deal. It was 1977---you could practically walk down the street with a joint and not get two glances.

Arnold's exploits are not what concerns me. Every male in his position would party and experiment. I will not vote for him because he's in favor of the unconstitutional assault weapon ban.

Anyboody who was a teenager or above from 1965 to 1975 gets a free pass on those stupid mistakes in my book. Free love, anti-authority, drugs, blah blah blah.

It doesn't justify it. It was a national psychosis.

Has it all come down to possibly no tax increase? Not a tax cut mind you but no tax increase. Arnold basically runs as a liberal democrat on every issue, be it guns, be it abortion, be it drilling for oil... is that it? Can we just run Charlie Manson from prison now too if he puts an R next to his name, and promises no new taxes? Is that all it means these days?

Arnold on his future movie career:

"I realize there's only one Arnold in the word, that there's never been an Arnold before, and the one thing that won't work on the screen is my being an a**-kicker."

LOL!

These are quite similar to the sort of revelations that got Clinton pillored 24/7 by FReepers in 1998.

But here they're cheering Arnie on.

Either excuse both men for this sort of activity, or condemn both. Don't be brazen, blazing hypocrites.

I have read a lot of this thread. Out of curiosity, because I no longer live in CA. I did live in CA as a single adult in the 70's. Arnold lived the way that most young adults (20-40) did. I used to tell my East Coast visitors that the "unusual smell" was cactus. :-)

IMO, the people who are critical of the way Arnold lived in the '70's are from the East or midWest, or maybe just awfully young.
If no one can show me pix of the partying after Arnold married Maria, then I'm not impressed. Although, extramarital affairs are quite common in her family. She probably expected a few or more.

And even more, has anyone caught him in a lie?
