*********Tipper's Name: Serena and Venus Williams Restaurant: Italian Where it happened: Boston Total bill / Tip amount / Percentage: $280.00 / $20.00 / 7% What happened: They came in with coaches managers and groupies....ordered things that were not on the menu only drank a strict 40% water 60% cranberry juice mixture and very rudely snapped their fingers for water refills (they had played that afternoon). The manager payed one bill and tipped well the groupies payed the other and left only 20 bucks. They were awful, and when they got the bill had us split it 12 ways and denied ever ordering half the things their fat asses just ate! Never again if these two walk in will i jump to serve them and their group of 12- 14 aunts uncles cousins neighbors and any or all other groupies that walk around kissing their asses!
******Tipper's Name: Natalie Merchant Restaurant: Campagna Where it happened: New York Total bill / Tip amount / Percentage: $108.00 / $8.00 / 7% What happened: Not to mention all the shit she got for free that night from the evil owner of this now defunct B-list celeb shit hole

I wonder if some of these celebs are so used to be comped just for the privelege of eating at certain establishments that they just assume that both the check and the tip will be taken care of.
I admit I have problems with places that are generally self-serve buffets. Why should the server be tipped the same 15-20% if *I'm* the one fetching the food and delivering it to the table? I don't want to be rude but if they expect to be tipped like a full-service restaurant, shouldn't they be the ones getting my food?

Whenever a server mentions a tip to me, I tell them, "Plant yer corn early this year". :)

My daughter waitressed at a TGIFriday's type restaurant until 4 days before birthing her first child. If it weren't for tips, she and her husband would have never been able to pay their bills.
That experience taught her dad to tip 20%, unless the experience was not what he expected.
In that case, he tips 15%. ;o)

I also sold cars. Blacks are the most profitableI've had car salesmen tell me the same thing. Some only want to deal with blacks. It's the same in the clothing business. I knew a Jewish fellow back in the70s who had a store that catered to blacks and their style of dress at that time. He said that he would put a pair of men's fake patent leather shoes on the shelf with a price tag of $20 on them, and no one would even take a second look. However, if he priced them at $60 he couldn't keep enough in stock. Go figure..............

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you're required to tip a full 15% at a buffet style restaurant where the waiters only bring you your drinks.

LOL! I had a boyfriend who would say, when asked about a tip, SEABISCUIT in the eighth! Until this year, I didn't understand what he meant!

20% minimum. If you can't handle it, don't eat out.
Why? Who died and made you God?
OK "Sloth"...lets assume that you are aware that tips are the way a good server makes a living...and you get good service, but decide to STIFF the server regardless, you are rippin' the server off just as if you reached in their pocket...you cheap SOB.

What you've said about blacks is true. It appears to be a cultural thing. Like all generalities it's not true across the board, but it actually explains why so many servers would prefer not servicing blacks--not racial bias--which is often used by the race pimps to sue places like Denny's (that and forcing them to pay for the meal upfront). The overall cultural practice in the United States is to tip and pay your bill at the end of the meal. Some folks just choose not to adapt. Perhaps it will be necessary to adapt to the practice of including the tip in the bill as a percentage of the price of the meal such as is done in Germany. Of course, there's danger in that unless it's posted and done uniformly. Here in California a Chinese restaurant owner got sued for discrimination, because he only did it with respect to blacks, and he lost the case.I think it's a racism thing, involving blacks' determination to pay as little as possible to non-blacks.
One white New York taxidriver I know, once wrote that cabbies hate to pick up blacks, because not only do black males commit most robberies (and murders) of cabbies, but many more blacks typically stiff cabbies not only out of a tip, but their fare.
I lived for a number of years in a black New York neighborhood. Chinese takeout places made blacks pay up front, because otherwise, they'd get ripped off. I also noticed an interesting behavior among taxi riders. For the first six months I lived there, I took cheap taxis home from the subway every night. (It was a mile away through a zone of crack houses, muggers, and racist thugs.) At first, I always gave a tip. But then I noticed that few black riders tipped. And then I noticed, that many drivers (including a white a--hole) EXPECTED me to tip, even though they expected nothing from the black riders. So, I stopped tipping.
After six months, except for torrential downpours, I stopped taking cabs altogether. I figured, why pay people who are hostile and unreliable? Besides, I didn't want to live in fear, and I was getting physically soft, too. It turned out the street was safer than the subway. Once the dealers and "working girls" got to know me as a local, they were quite polite, and I only had two close calls with would-be muggers, as opposed to frequent attacks on the subway.

In the end, it will be about the same because of the volume they do in establishments like that. I had some of my best shifts tip wise at Sunday brunch. Not as much work, but much more turnover.

Liberals are extremely generous with other people's money, but they're a bunch of tightwads when it comes to parting with their own, except when they're helping to push a political agenda.

Having known a few waitresses, a lot of establishments pool the waitresses tips and from the pool, the doorman, the hostess, the cooks, and the cleanup boys get their cut of the tips. >>>>>>
Your right........I think this is a SCAM the employers ( gov't) came up with.
My daughter was a hostess one summer @ a 'well known' eatery. Everyone made abt 2 bucks an hour (wait staff, hostess, bus boys, & dish washers) and ALL TIPS were counted & SPLIT. Total payroll to (say) 5, is only 10 bucks per hour, rather than paying 4 at least min. wage & the waitress 2 bucks per hr. ( same 5 emp. cost about 25 bucks per hour).
So the employer loves it, & gov't gets taxes on all tips...........and the employees get scr**ed.

If you want a real "window into the soul" of a person- an indicator of what they are really like down deep inside when nobody else is looking- -observe the way they treat people they believe to be powerless before them.I must say that is the best post I think I have ever read on an internet message board. Absolutely, Nail + Head.

This thread proves that the % concept is absurd.
You dont tip 4 when the food is cheap and 40 when it is expensive. A reasonable person, when receiving accepable service, tips based on a dollar amount which is reasonable for services performed.
The % concept discriminates against people who cannot get jobs in upscale restaurants or who live in poorer areas with no trans to work, and bust their ass for 1/10th of what the elite waiters get.
If you believe in mandatory %'s, then go all the way and set up a waiter welfare system, which redistributes all tips to make the system equitable. Just emulate the federal govt.

You assume too much. I typically tip 15%+, but I find it offensive that you or anyone else thinks the server has a RIGHT to what is properly seen as a gift. I would much prefer for restaurants to raise their prices, pay their staff adequately, and let me mind my own business.
