The manager payed one bill and tipped well the groupies payed the other and left only 20 bucks. They were awful, and when they got the bill had us split it 12 ways and denied ever ordering half the things their fat asses just ate! Never again if these two walk in will i jump to serve them and their group of 12- 14 aunts uncles cousins neighbors and any or all other groupies that walk around kissing their asses!

I worked for a well known & popular restaurant here in SF called Aqua, which takes in millions a year. The Chef-owner Michael Mina is well known as a tyrant in the kitchen, even gone so far has to use his hands on them, has yelled & screamed at servers in the main dining room in front of customers. He thinks he's a God & his shit don't smell. The working conditions are unbearable so many servers or kitchen staff don't last very long. He treats women like they are stupid...must be his Egyptian heritage showing thru. The managers get a take of the servers tips which I think is horrible since they make so much more than the servers. [editor's note: This is illegal. Contact the Depatment of Labor and make the bastard pay!!] Some dirt on the customers....the Mayor, Willie (tight-ass) Brown likes to frequent the restaurant often but he demands the best of service, but only leaves a 10% tip, while wearing his designer suits. He works the servers to the bone & treats them like dirt under his feet.

In many countries, tipping isn't even done. It's considered rude.

Were it not for the fact that I know many people essentially work for tips, I wouldn't leave them myself.

It's a free market. The idea that a 15% tip is a minimum would be like a 15% tax on food. People are free to not tip at all. No one ever criticizes the restaurants that pay 3.00 an hour and expect consumers to share their payroll expense.

If 2 people have a $300 dinner, the idea that a waiter should get +45 for 15 minutes of actual work is ridiculous.

As it is the custom here and we know that servers work for tips it would be good behaviour for the liberals who always demand everything for free to be charitable to the 'little people'. If the service was good, it is very revealing about these folks how they treat those they preceive to be 'beneath' them. Very typical of them and maddening to a server who knows they have done a good job.

What does a massuese get paid for 15 minutes of work??? A lot more than $45....same with a personal trainer....hair dresser...etc. Look....15% is the CUSTOM in this country...pay less if the service is poor and pay more if the service is great...your choice.....otherwise go to a smorgasbord or cafeteria where no tipping is required. (you still should leave $1.00 a person for clearing off the dirty dishes.)

My MIL didn't abort her two sons, and when her husband decided that supporting them was inconvenient for his style and left them, she went to work as a waitress and did it for 30 years. A good tip meant the difference between paying the bills or not paying the bills, so she always worked hard to get the tip--but didn't always get it. The laborer is worthy of his hire. I think the restaurants should pay the servers what they are worth but since they do not--if I cannot afford to tip I do not eat out.

I do not tip well for poor service, however.

I waited on Barbara Striesand one day in San Diego. She was with her boyfriend "James Something", I say that because I cant remember his name. Anyway, everything was going fine until this over-zealous employee of ours decides he wants to run her food out. Little did the idiot know was that he was taking the wrong food to her. He delivered the food with a little school girl attitude and left. I went to see how everything was going and she was such a bitch. She atarted yelling at me because she was eating the wrong food. I wantd to say "why the fuck are you eating it anyway." After all was said and done and a comped meal she left me five bucks on about $150 in product for free. I wanted to kick the other server's ass. And hers too.

Having known a few waitresses, a lot of establishments pool the waitresses tips and from the pool, the doorman, the hostess, the cooks, and the cleanup boys get their cut of the tips. So the 45 dollar tip you leave may not always go to the waiter.

Europeans are notoriously poor tippers, too. In many European countries it is customary for the restaurant to include the tip in the bill, so the notion of leaving cash on a table or filling in an additional line on a credit card slip is completely foreign to them (pun intended).

When I was a bartender years ago I found this to be very true. I have actually served drinks to Penn and Teller, Will Wheaton, Grampa Munster, Tod Rungren, Gayle Sayers, John Riggins, Hank Stram, Len Dawson and tons of others I can't think of. The worst tippers were liberal local celebrities like the weather guy or a local division II college coach. Football palyers seem to like batenders. They usually establish a relationship early and often would arrange to pay for lots of people's drinks up front. Penn Gillette is the nicest and LOUDEST man I ever poured a drink for.

I don't get the tipping thing, anyway, never have. In any other job, you either do the work well or you don't get a raise, or you eventually get fired, and you get paid a solid check.

"To Insure Proper Service" doesn't make sense, because you tip *after* the service, not before, and may never be there again. And even if you are there again, what's the odds you'll get the same server who remembers your propensity to tip anyway?

I hate tips. I've never been into haggling, either. Just give me the price, and I'll decide what I want to buy. I hate commissions too. Just pay employees a decent salary and supervise their performance to make sure they're doing the job right.

If it's true, these Hollyweird folk should be ashamed. I mean, the fact they are rude and arrogant is unsurprising given that they have handlers, of various descriptions, around them all day, telling them how wonderful they are. if they don't, they're fired. Still, with all their left wing views, you'd think they'd show the working class some respect.

The worst tippers, in my experience, are people who come in with coupons. During college I worked in a place that routinely put out "Buy one get one free" coupons. And they'd tip $2 at best...
