Geoghan killed in prison (Boston Herald)
Breaking news/by Eric Convey
Saturday, August 23, 2003

Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.

``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.

``Our investigation continues,'' she said.

The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.

Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.

More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.

Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.

Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.

I agree covering up child abuse, or any abuse for that matter is wrong, and have never said differently.

But to paint ALL members of the Church with the same brush is wrong.

I don't think I'm in the minority of Catholics who grew up with good priests and nuns.

As disgusting as it is, pedophiles exist everywhere, not just in the priesthood of the Catholic Church. But it's not PC to mention any others than priests.

Nor is it PC on FR to remind folks that most pedophiles are heterosexuals, not homosexuals.

Sheeple always amaze me.

OK, now you're changing the situation. Now you're saying that Geoghan got killed for hitting on someone in prison. This is different than saying killing people in prison, vigilante-style (which mistakenly assumes the killer is doing so to mete out justice, rather than acting like a wild animal) just for their crimes is justice.

Has it even been established that Geoghan was killed for hitting on someone yet???????? And if not, wwill you affirm your belief, in clear terms, that you believe justice should come in the form of prisoners being let loose to kill and rape other prisoners, based on their own internal system of justice (which of course is not based on justice, but on how easy it is to forceully take sexual favors from weaker prisoners or how easy it is to take their money or beat on them for the sake of beatin gon them).

He wasn't sentenced to death, he was sentenced to prison. The public may support the death penalty, but this guy wasn't sentenced to anything close to that by the court.

The person who killed him is a murderer.

FWIW I don't detect one ounce of Christian charity in your diatribe. I guess you consider yourself as God, that you have the power to deceide who lives and dies.

I guess anyone who disagrees with you is a "stinkin' liberal." Cretin.

The Catholic church is a magnet for anything and everything the least bit unsavory. Always has been. Always will be.

And you have facts to back up this claim???????

I don't think Des meant it the way you take it (I agree the wording is unfortunate). She is a devout Catholic herself and is as heartbroken as any of us about the scandal, but since she does believe that the Church is that founded by Christ, she understands that Satan would rather put his efforts into winning the Church away from God than concentrate on lesser targets.

Another reason I believe Homosexual men have the propensity to be Pedophiles, is when a homosexual man is over 55 there are not alot of other homosexuals that are interested in them. I have seen this a couple of times. at any rate they seem to want to invite little boys over to there house or in there car now what is that all about?

How many times do you see Homosexual men that are no longer in there sexual prime celebrating 20 30 or 50 years together, that alot of us had the opportunity to see with our parents or grandparnets or any Freepers that might be on this site. Some Medical Doctor's say that Old Men that are homosexual can turn into pedophiles.

You can't be "with" Jesus and promoting the cover up of pedophiles at the same time...and it's still going on!

I've never said differently.

I stand by my reference to "industry" in regard to this issue. As wrong as the cover-up and protection of these despicable acts is, it's no different than illegal acts covered up by any other "business" except that it happens to be a religious denomination.

There was an article a couple of years ago where the reporter actually went through the police reports of sexual assault complaints against members of the clergy. Ministers and Rabbis had more complaints filed against them than Catholic priests. I'm not sure of the name of the paper, but it was a Denver paper.

I didn't refuse to answer your question, I simply chose not to.

FWIW I hope that I would be able to control my temper so as not to deprive my child of a father (murderers go to jail), and would do anything I could to assist the prosecutors.

You would kill the rapist, and deny your child your presence as a male role model?

Actually not bad idea. You are a selfish, violent person, and your kid would probably be better off without you as an "example."

Long term relationships in the homosexual (male) community are the exception rather than the rule.

However, I must confess that I have an elderly (70s) aunt who has been in a lesbian relationship with the same woman since the early 1960s.

And they do not trumpet their life, nobody really talks about it except on rare occasions of candor. In my 45 years, neither has ever mentioned it to me. They are both more like your typical blue haired knitting baby garment grannies....and they would never dare vote anything but conservative. LOL...a far cry from some Bay area activist.

They have always lived with her childless older sister btw....of course their home and garden is immaculate.

You and dagoofyfoot need to apologize to each other, all of us and FR should be Internet friends and have good honest dis-areements and debates with each other. Dagoofyfoot you insulted adam_az by calling him a pedophile. Be nice :-)

Well, let's see....

There were popes who were members of the Mafia. Joseph Cardinal Bernardin - need I say more? Richilieu? Throughout church historty there have been many unsavory characters. That doesn't mean that the church itself is at fault, just that Satan uses what he can to try to tear it down and it can't be done.

Come on, the church has been a target for Satan since he first tempted Christ in the desert. It still stands.

None of the Bishops I know have protected any priests - in fact one of them called the police on one of his priests. And that was more than 20 years ago.

I do not, never have and never will condone coverup of any kind whether political, personal or religious.

And I always claimed I was the "average Cathoclic" but I guess to you I wasn't. I was way too involved in the Church - I was a lector and spent lots and lots of time in the Sactuary with the priests and altar boys (I couldn't be one because they didn't have altar girls or acolytes back then.) My father was president of the Parish Council and my mother was VP of the Rosary society.

My dad was a cop, as were a lot of my friends' dads - if there was inappropriate behavior going on in our school or Church he would not have overlooked it.

I believe my brother and I (just like our parents)are in the majority of kids growing up in the Catholic Church and attending Catholic school. The victims of the sickos that slipped through the cracks are in the majority.

Well I think there is a distinct difference between men and women, for instance as a woman goes through menopause for the most part looses her sexual desire although many have sexual relationships in there golden years but that is an exception than the rule, Men are different in this way, I can laugh about this but my parents are in there 70's my mother is 71 and dad is 78 they are not intimate anymore my dad due to some illness yet my mother as she puts it says My dad cannot do anything any more but he would like my mom at least to talk dirty to him. LOL she tells him he's just a crazy dirty Old man and says he needs to go call 1-900" yet they have been married forever. There is a major difference between man and women as they age.
