Geoghan killed in prison (Boston Herald)
Breaking news/by Eric Convey
Saturday, August 23, 2003

Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.

``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.

``Our investigation continues,'' she said.

The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.

Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.

More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.

Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.

Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.

Well, it took 55 posts, but I knew the overt Catholic bashing was on its way.

RC is about as Satanic as the Masonic Lodge.

No. That is not justice. It may be a fitting end to a deplorable life, but it is not justice.

Justice is what he faces now.

Good news all the way around. One less drain on the taxpayer, a measure of revenge for the victims, and no possibility of any future victims.

Well said, B-chan. There's no good news here. None. A sorry, sick tragedy all round.

Is it morally acceptable to propose that murderers have their prison sentences reduced solely because the murder involved the killing of another prisoner?

Let's reduce the sentences of any inmate who kills another inmate by four months for every inmate they take out.

Let me make sure I have this right...If I have a 3 year sentence for manslaughter, I need only murder three more people and actually be released to society SOONER?!? What a deal!

We really cannot be the judge here. Jesus died for all sinners.

May this man rest in peace.

In the "old" days, I believe the fathers of the violated boys would have done the justice.....

But for goodness sake, extracting glee from his demise is trashy, and maybe even diseased..........

Save your holier than thou jive for the judicial system of the state of Massachussetts that lacks the will to terminate such human debris. There must be execution for raping so many little boys who are G_d's creation same as you and I. The devil gets to deal now with Geoghan.

I don't want our prisoners to mete out "justice",however.

But before we judge them, we should know what he did to provoke the attack. He might have made the mistake of forgetting where he was and tried to pull something like he did on innocent helpless children.

I'm a retributivist. As such, it doesn't much matter to me how repayment for a crime is made, so long as that is, in fact, made.

The criminal justice system failed to appropriately collect. The incarcerated individual who killed the pedophile fulfilled the duty.

As a Catholic, I can certainly take this rhetoric more than I could stand having the Catholic bishops allow things to get so out of hand.
