Want to Try Linux Without Loading it to Your Hard Drive?
Posted on 08/22/2003 9:33:03 PM PDT by Mean Daddy
Has all the talk about viruses scaring you away from MS Windows? Considering switching to Linux, but afraid to make the leap? Consider going to www.knoppix.org (or do a Google search) where you can create a bootable Knoppix CD-ROM. Boots up the Linux OS without writing to your harddrive. In fact, you don't need a harddrive to use it, just a CD-ROM.
There are lots of Linux support groups in your area where people enjoy sharing their Linux knowledge. Been playing with Knoppix and plan on using it for Internet access and keeping a MS Windows partition for games, the wife etc.

Nothing's bullet proof, but Linux is a heck of lot better then Windows.

Almost forgot, it comes with multiple applications including SOffice which has a word processor, spreadsheet etc. that is compatible with MS Office. It's my understanding that you are able to create PDS (Adobe) files using the word processor.

E-Z alternative, get a spare minitower and install RedHat-latest, link to your other systems via an ethernet, and to your dsl or cable box using a gateway router. Then you don't need to mess with cd-roms at all, just the power button.
Zounds-- you can even run ftpd without the need to pay for separate unbundled sw or a business-oriented version of the base system!!

Thanks. I've been wanting to try Linux forever, but every time I could not get all the parts to work correctly together. I could get connected into my network, but x windows wouldn't work; x windows would work, but no internet; internet was fine, but no print, etc., etc., etc. I was so frustrated that I gave up on it, but that was a couple of years ago. Here's hoping that they've got a better install routines/driver compatibility systems in Linux these days.

When Linux is as easy to use as Windows, cheaper and more stable, I'll switch. Linux is for computer geeks, not the average user.

There are several distributions of CDROM bootable Linux available, but KOPPIX was the top result on Google.
Google search: linux "bootable cdrom"

Sorry, you're not being plain enough for me. What version of Linux is as easy, or easier to use than Windows, cheaper and more stable? I think that's a fairly simple question.
