"A demagogue like Moore..."

Sorry, but can't let this go without calling you on it. He's definitely, absolutely, a Conservative, and, of course, very religious. But if you're going to call a man (especially a judge, let alone a Chief Justice) a demagogue, you're going to have to provide examples.

Conservative != Demagogue.
Christian (even religious right) != Demagogue.

I'm sick of seeing people called names without hard evidence to back it up. I'm not religious right by any means (I'm Pennsylvania Catholic scum) but that doesn't mean I don't believe in intellectual honesty.

I call. Let's see those cards.

But this is an example of the gradual destruction of religious freedom of expression and it is serious business.

At a previous job a few years back, the secretaries annually put up Christmas trees and decorations. This was a fairly large company in Texas, and no one ever complained.

One day, a corporate beancounter from up north visited right before Christmas and demanded that they be removed.

I wasn't there to witness it, but I heard many of the secretaries were literally in tears over it. I hope somebody got the SOB's name for "future reference".

"

He's hiding? Really? I thought all his actions were out front and that's what your problem with him is. You know, that big ol' stone thing out front.

Why do you have such a problem with words that derive from the Bible? Do the source of words scare you? What if he just made them up?

Doubtful you'll be considered 3/5 of a human, stripped of voting rights, or made to sit at the back of the bus.

Yet...............

Revelation 13:4-10
4.  Men worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, "Who is like the beast? Who can make war against him?"
 5.  The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for forty-two months.
 6.  He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven.
 7.  He was given power to make war against the saints and to conquer them. And he was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.
 8.  All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast--all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world.
 9.  He who has an ear, let him hear.
 10.  If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity he will go. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword he will be killed. This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of the saints.
 11.  Then I saw another beast, coming out of the earth. He had two horns like a lamb, but he spoke like a dragon.
 12.  He exercised all the authority of the first beast on his behalf, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed.
 13.  And he performed great and miraculous signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to earth in full view of men.
 14.  Because of the signs he was given power to do on behalf of the first beast, he deceived the inhabitants of the earth. He ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived.
 15.  He was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that it could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed.
 16.  He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead,
 17.  so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name.
 18.  This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666.

Revelation 14:6-12
 6.  Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth--to every nation, tribe, language and people.
 7.  He said in a loud voice, "Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water."
 8.  A second angel followed and said, "Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great, which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries."
 9.  A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: "If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on the forehead or on the hand,
 10.  he, too, will drink of the wine of God's fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. He will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb.
 11.  And the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image, or for anyone who receives the mark of his name."
 12.  This calls for patient endurance on the part of the saints who obey God's commandments and remain faithful to Jesus.

Will THIS be good enough for you?

..a demagogue like Moore, who hides behind religion, is far more sinister....

"Chief Justice Moore served our country as a Captain in the Military Police Corps of the United States Army. He also served as Battalion Staff Officer at Ft. Riley, Kansas, and as a Company Commander in Vietnam. During his professional career, Justice Moore became the first full-time Deputy District Attorney in Etowah County and served in this position from 1977 until 1982. He returned to private law practice in Gadsden until he was elected Circuit Judge, Place Number One of the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit in Gadsden, in 1992. He served in this capacity from 1992 until his election as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Alabama in November 2000."

"whacko libertarians"

Actually, all the Libertarians that I know have no problem with the source of any word, including from the Bible. All the Libertarians that I know are also Christians.

It seems Bob Barr is on "my side."

It must be the "Do not commit adultery" one that he objects to the most.

But, Moore will likely use a defeat to run for a higher office.

Interesting. Although he can't win higher office with just the (white) Christian vote. He would have to court the Southern Baptist. Difficult task when most of them are democRATs.

2004 isn't too far away.

That's a cute response, but it avoids the question. In fact, it changes the subject.

This is just the beginning. The fact is the Constitution gives us freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM it!
This is about public places and the display of religous things it them, yes? Well, WE are the public, are we not?
If they don't want a copy of the Commandments in ONE public place in Alabama what are they going to do when hundreds of thousands of citizens post them in a million public places?
Time for a simple, inexpensive grassroots rebellion.
EVERYONE who is outraged by this- and not just in Alabama- print up some copies of the Ten Commandments and put a copy EVERYWHERE you go. Walls, telephone poles, libraires, stores, supermarkets. Tape them up, tuck them in magazines or on shelves. Sure, they will be taken down- but KEEP doing it. And make signs for your private places too- your lawns, your businesses, your car windows. Post the Ten Commandments EVERYWHERE. Everyone who is outraged- start tomorrow.
Remember- WE are the public, and the laws are for the people, the people are not for the laws.

That doesn't mean that you have to agree with their rulings, or that they can't change.

But it does mean that you must follow those rulings until they are changed.

A government lawyer of my acquaintance has told me that Bob Barr once said in his presence, at a government meeting, "F*** international law!"

I don't dispute that. I'm just saying it doesn't necessarily make him wrong that he's crosswise of the current rule of law on the issue. The rule of law is inherently fallible as long as man is accountable only to himself.

Nicely done, Elsie. It's good enough for ME. Last night a strong Christian friend told me, "God loves his bold children. Take the mane of the horse and be fearless in your ride!" I say fine with me... Let's roll!

I'm glad too, but the point is that the "no establishment" clause doesn't mean what the contemporary courts say it means.

You may well be correct. Six states had some form of establishment after the Revolution. They gradually dropped them, a wise move I think. Massachussetts did so in 1833.

In America we avoided the insanity that had gone on in Europe with its wars of religion, where Catholics burned Protestants at the stake and Protestants desecrated Catholic churches. Indeed, Catholic/Protestant strife is still going on in parts of Europe.

In America some states established particular denominations, while others favored Protestant churches in general. Maryland established Christian churches in general so that Catholic churches could be included. Others, like Rhode Island, had separation of church and state. Imagine trying to force all that together. Thank goodness for the First Amendment.
