CA: Schwarzenegger vows to avoid raising taxes

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Republican candidate in California's recall race for governor, said he would hire an outside auditor to go through the state budget and identify potential areas to cut. He also pledged to avoid raising taxes.

He did campaign on a tax cut though.

Then again, Bush II has a rather poor record on fiscal conservatism. True, he got a miniscule (relative to the proposal) tax cut passed, but he's ballooned spending in other areas (and I'm excluding the military, because I've yet to meet a missile I haven't liked).

Here are some of the highlights of Bush II's love affair with big government:

$15 billion flushed down the AIDS in Africa toilet.
$400 billion - $800 billion socialized prescription drug plan.
Large increases in federal hiring.

And also, the Pete Wilson no-opposition is exactly what I'm warning about happening with Arnold.

overall Bustamante is a better choice than Arnold, because he energizes the legislative GOP against his budget, while Arnold does not.

Precisely, which was the point I was making just now...Pete Wilson was able to pass the largest tax increase in state history because there was no one left to oppose. Its the danger of party politics, but that is why we have checks and balances...the BASE is SUPPOSED TO REJECT SOMEONE FROM THE OTHER SIDE!

You know, the governor has a line-item veto.

Imagine the fun we could have with that. The original would be something like this

"Whereas, that as a finding of the legislature and the people of California, guns are a hazard to children and health and the proper control of them important to the State and whereas that controls on assault weapons are of the utmost importance, therefore it is resolved that the state will allocate a $1000 tax credit to the purchaser of a certified gun safe."

Becomes, after some good line item vetoing

"Whereas, that as a finding of the legislature and the people of California, guns... are important to the State, and whereas... assault weapons are of the utmost importance, therefore it is resolved that the state will allocate a $1000 tax credit to the purchaser of a... gun..."

Doing things like that and cracking down on illegals would consume most of my time in office.

And keep in mind that McClintock, as a downticket candidate outspent 10-1 by his opponent, got 103,000 MORE votes than the top of the ticket Bill Simon in the 2002 election.

Rush did say today that he thought Arnold was actually a conservative - that his instincts etc. ran that way - he could tell by the way he invests, runs his businesses etc. and that if he would just be true to that, he would still win the election even in a liberal state like cali.

You are aware that when you add up all the conservative opposition to the Arnold bandwagon, even at the height of Arnold's popularity (before Rob Lowe, before Buffett and Prop. 13, etc.) it was still only a few points behind him, and, if you add in Uberroth, actually 1% ahead of Arnold.

You keep repeating that many times on these kind of threads.

While that is probably a fact, it does not to the conclusion that you think it does.

Case in point:

Here in Florida, Gov. Jeb Bush has been elected twice.

The latest official figures show that there are 372,000 more Democrats than Republicans and that this number was even larger the first time Jeb was elected.

Also, the three largest counties have decidedly larger Democrat pluralities (think Election 2000 here) and in fact, Democrats have the registration lead in 47 of the 67 counties in Florida.

How does Jeb Bush win here in Florida - rather handily, I might add too - faced with such a disparity in registered voters.

BTW, Florida has about 16,000,000 people v. California's 36,000,000. Do the math and the registered voter situation is almost identical.

Why does Jeb win?

Could it be that Jeb runs as a conservative? No, of course not, that cannot not happen in your paradigm....right?

So far, only Arnold has the enormous muscle to dead lift this State's massive economic power and potential up.

8+9 (the solid conservatives) = 17, or five behind Arnold. Including Uberroth's supporters, the non-Arnold people are just as potent as the Arnold people.

Additionally, Arnold's supporters include all the sellout conservatives who'd vote for Hillary Clinton if she had an R after her name. When another candidate begins to run equal to the anointed one, they tend to jump ship. We saw this with Simon catching Riordan in the last primary election, and will see it again.

Let's Roll, I'm a loyal 9 year listener to Rush's Radio Program so I do not say the following with any intent to sound critical, but if he believes so strongly for California's future, why doesn't he offer his services to the Recall Campaign of Simon or McClintock. I'm sure Arnold would appreciate some pointers too.

I just think Rush refuses to see the golden potential of an Arnold win. He always has told us that the libs work in increments. Never stop, never cry defeat. So why should we? Does it always have to be all conservative or nothing?

So far I'm so impressed with Arnold's idea of hiring an independent auditor to go through the books of this State to finally pinpoint our revenue inflow and outflow.

And furthermore, I sure like the way he was in total control, vigorously and smoothly bench pressed the press.

Prop. 187 passed with 60% of the vote - same demographics.

Also, recent poll shows that Hispanics have core values that correlate with Republican party - tend to be pro-life, anti-gay marriage, strong work ethic, etc. And they are starting to wake up to that fact.

When I worked the Voter Registration booth a couple of weeks ago we had alot of people switching parties (over to Republican).
