Welcome to Pancakes on Wednesdays. Wednesday August 20, 2003 |

Here is an amalgamation of trivial facts and seemingly useless data. Do not forget to hit the hyperlinks. We have links, lots of them.
|
EDACIOUS |
Relating to eating. That, at least, is the literal sense of the word, since it comes from the Latin verb edere, to eat. But even in Latin it had a stronger sense of voracious consumption and that was carried with it into English. It was brought into the languagesurprisingly recentlyby classically educated writers at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It never really caught on and is now almost extinct, perhaps because voracious is a better established and more vigorous-sounding alternative. The Roman writer Ovid created a maxim in his Metamorphoses: Tempus edax rerum. time devours everything. As a result, in its rare appearances the word is most likely to be linked with time. Thomas Carlyle used it in this way when he referred to events swallowed in the depths of edacious time. |

HI fatima!! Are you vacationing at the shore? Please be sure that Karen and Jim know that we are proud of the jobs they are doing to help protect America. Has Jim gone to another ship yet?

From the men in the Military and the Canteen
No need for alarm Ladies.
We're just here for the pancakes!
To: HiJinx; Radix
"Okay, so now do we need to enlist a bunch of folks to remind our Canteen Captain at appropriate times throughout the day to take a break and have a snack?"
I've hired a band to play a song at meal time to remind me to eat.
Hear what they are playing now?
"We're just signing a song
All day long
Waiting for Radix
To give us a fix

Diva, good evening! You are looking quite sparklie this evening. Don't forget, tomkow and his voices are easily led astray by sparklies.

From your volunteer fire fighting days?My department didn't have a ladder truck, but I learned to repel off of a basket just like that. "Trust your ropes and just step off." "Use your hand behind your back as a brake." It was ok after I got off the platform. It was that first step.....a leap of faith!

I heard a UN creep say on the radio that the US wasn't providing enough security. I tell you, for Americans, it's damn if you do and damn if you don't. What I heard was that the UN DID NOT WANT any American security forces!!! ARGH!!!!
