Relating to eating.

That, at least, is the literal sense of the word, since it comes from the Latin verb edere, to eat. But even in Latin it had a stronger sense of voracious consumption and that was carried with it into English. It was brought into the language—surprisingly recently—by classically educated writers at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It never really caught on and is now almost extinct, perhaps because voracious is a better established and more vigorous-sounding alternative. The Roman writer Ovid created a maxim in his Metamorphoses: “Tempus edax rerum.” time devours everything. As a result, in its rare appearances the word is most likely to be linked with time. Thomas Carlyle used it in this way when he referred to events “swallowed in the depths of edacious time.”

Neither Heat Nor Sun Stays Army Postal Unit in Qatar

CAMP AS-SAYLIYAH, Qatar, Aug. 10, 2003 — Qatar is a small country occupying a peninsula jutting off the Saudi Arabian landmass at the opposite end of the Persian Gulf from Iraq. Up to six months ago, the base had housed a skeleton staff working to pre-position equipment for a coalition-led force in case of conflict in the region.

That all changed last winter, when Qatar became the headquarters for the Central Command, and the relatively small base was suddenly filled with troops and civilian workers engaged in waging war with Iraq in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

When 10 members of the 1st/554th Postal Services Platoon arrived in Qatar in April to take over the base Army Post Office at Camp As-Sayliyah, they got a little more than they expected. 1st Sgt. Susan Baker, the postmaster on base, said the five civilian U.S. Embassy employees managing the office were swamped with mail of troops recently arrived for Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Do you think the UN will finally get the message that there are those who DO NOT WANT PEACE, PERIOD?

 

 

I think that it is more imperative that our very own Government gets the message that there are those who DO NOT WANT THE UN, PERIOD!

 

The UN has hindered the USA and provided obstacles at every opportunity in the War against Terror. They have placed the lives of all Americans, and now most especially the lives of our Troops in jeopardy by their ridiculous antics. It is time to say goodbye to the UN.

Maybe the third time is a charm....I can't seem to get this answered. Thanks, Fawnn, for pointed me to this. I did hear right and it's even worse. I heard Kofi Annan on the tv last night say the US underestimated the need for security. Now, I find out the UN flat out REJECTED security. We need to get out of the UN and get them out of the US. They are endangering our troops, and yes, hindering them in their work. ARGH! How about France or Germany or Belgium; anywhere but here.
