Post Office refuses to send air conditioners to Troops in Iraq:

"According to a Washington Times editorial today... a volunteer effort to send our troops air conditioners to make their tour of duty in Iraq a little easier to bear has had the effort stopped cold in its tracks... by the Post Office!

"Last Friday, Mrs. Frankie Mayo -- the organizer of Operation Air Conditioner who had 302 new units ready for shipment -- was informed 'by a bureaucrat in an air-conditioned office at Delaware's Wilmington Distribution Center that it would no longer ship the air conditioners because they contain Freon.'

"It's kind of curious that our friends at the post office would suddenly stop participating in this relief effort. They've already shipped 425 other units for the project since June.

"Mrs. Mayo -- whose son is currently serving in Iraq -- needs our help. As she wrote in an email to the Times, 'We must cut through any red tape to get (our soldiers) what they need - Period.

No excuses or delays. Delays are costing American soldiers lives. I will not accept failure as it is not an option for me nor my family.'"

,u>ACTION ITEM: We need to let Postmaster General John Potter know that this kind of bureaucratic inanity by the post office is completely unacceptable.

Go to SEND EMAIL to send Potter a FREE editable, pre-written letter NOW:

NOTE: Time is of the essence here, so please make your voice heard TODAY. If you'd like other options:
Potter's phone number is 202-268-2000;
Fax: 202-268-5211;
Or e-mail him directly at:
pmgceo@usps.gov.

Be sure to forward this to everyone you know who wants these bureaucrats to get OUT of the way of hard-working Americans who want to help our troops in Iraq.

Thank you!

Someone's employment head should roll for this.

There must be a way that we, the United States, could find a way to ship these a/c units, whether they contain freeon or not. Our soldiers are sacrificing so much for us that it's an outrage that the US Postal Service will not go the extra mile to ensure that the soldiers are made more comfortable.

Perhaps the Air Force could handle this situation more effectively!

There are numerous freight companies that would be more than happy to take this shipment. In fact, I'm surprised that the military doesn't fly 'em there themselves.

Of course we should make the effort to get the air conditioners there.

But if new air conditioners DON'T have freon, then the reason the postal official gave was wrong. OR someone is making a story up.

I would feel better if I knew about freon specifications, that's all.

Thanks, flavius. So, is this group sending USED air conditioners? Or is the postal official confused?

Sorry but you are wrong. They just have a new improved type of freon called 134a.

There has to be a better way to ship them than The United States Postal Service anyway. They only have 2 speeds. Slow and Stop !

Oh that would make my blood boil, staring at a non-running A/C unit in the 120 deg heat.

My husband thought that freeon had been banned. Perhaps tomorrow I will call our local a/c guy and ask this question.

As far as I know, FedEx and UPS do not deliver to soldiers in the field. (This is not a slam at FedEx and UPS, they are very good at what they do.)

It appears that the USPS won't deliver either, but they do not have the excuse of needing a street address! They are supposed to deliver to any APO or FPO address in a timely manner.

Only the Freon 12 that old car AC's used was bad for the ozone. Household AC units use a different type of freon that isn't banned.

So I don't know why the PO refuses to send them..

Thanks for the info on freeon; you've saved me a phone call in the morning. The post office is nearly useless and should have worked harder to make sure our soldier had the a/c units.

So I don't know why the PO refuses to send them..

I think it might have something to do with the words "lift" and "heavy object"

Basically what happened is freon has been reformulated to be more Ozone safe. It is still freon of which there are many types.

Most window air units used a type called R22 or R12. Now most everything used the supposed safer type 134a.

I am not sure I buy the fact that freon was harming our enviornment anyway. The supposed distructive kinds are still used in Mexico and overseas. And just regulated not banned here. All that happened was the price shot up here.
