Hillary: I Lost Power - Not

New York Sen. Hillary Clinton told ABC's "World News Tonight" last Thursday that the lights at her Chappaqua, NY mansion went out along with everyone else's when the big blackout hit.

But moments later during the same interview, Clinton contradicted herself and admitted that she was "one of the fortunate ones" who still had power, thanks to a Secret Service generator on her property.

"No, the lights aren't on," Clinton initially told ABC's Ted Koppel, who asked during their telephone chat if she still had power "up there."

After listening to the top Democrat expound for a few minutes on the vagaries of nuclear power and why she thought the collapse of Enron should have been a warning sign, Koppel revisited the question, asking, "Well, has the Secret Service got a nice generator for backup power? Or are you handling it on candles tonight?"

With that Sen. Clinton came clean and admitted she was enjoying full power.

"Well, no, they do. I'm one of the fortunate ones," she offered, without skipping a beat. "Because of all of the equipment and the communications, that is something that they can count on to keep essential services going."

Koppel pretended not to notice Hillary's earlier fib about being left without lights, noting only, "Well, the neighbors will be coming over for that cup of sugar later on."

She made it sound as if the generator was to benefit the secret service rather than herself. How transparent and unnecessary. The public would not object to a former president's home, even an impeached one, being equipped with a generator. In fact, they would expect it.

As anybody around FR for any length of time knows, I am no defender of anything Clinton, but wouldn't it make sense that the lights actually DID go out along with everybody else's, and then she was quickly up and running again because she had a generator? She may have actually told the truth, although I'm sure it was unintentional. What I find more interesting is her use of the word "I" rather than "we."

Actually my guess here is that Hillary didn't mean to lie per se. You see I would be willing to bet she was not in NY at the time so she just went along with the "of course my lights are out too, after all I'm just another intrepid New Yorker like the rest of you" Later she probably realized that the SS would have a generator on the property so she shifted her answer accordingly. Not that she has an aversion to lying as we all know. BTW, when was the last time a reported sighting of Bill Clinton in his beloved Harlem has ever been reported?

That could have been the case, but I believe Newsnight comes on at eleven thirty EST, which means the blackout was already 7+ hours old. Which means hillary!'s lights had been on for hours.

I wonder if hillary! would have admitted to having power if Koppel hadn't asked her directly.
