To think, I am going to be moving into my dormroom at the University of Michigan in less than 10 days. I am going to have to put up with this leftist, anti-American, and anti-Christian crap for atleast the next 4 years.

See if there are other conservatives on campus, there may be a few, and you can organize to counteract all the liberal degenerates.
There is a Young Republicans organization in Berkeley, if they can survive there, sure a similar organization can be created and survive in Michigan.
Good Luck and don't let them corrupt you. ;)

God be with you my friend. Keep your eyes on Jesus and get involved in a good Christian fellowship. Make time to read God's word and pray even when the studies and other demands grow. D.L Moody used to say "I have so much to do each day that if I didn't spend time in prayer I would never get it all done." All the best to you.

To think, I am going to be moving into my dormroom at the University of Michigan in less than 10 days. I am going to have to put up with this leftist, anti-American, and anti-Christian crap for atleast the next 4 years. As one who has been in that situation myself, you have my strongest sympathies! Hold firm to your conservative beliefs and don't let them intimidate you. I was in your shoes four years ago when I was choosing where to go and witnessed it again last week in conversations with a brother who just started his freshman year at a left wing school. I can give you the same warnings and advice I gave him.
First, it is an indisputable and inescapable fact that fringe radicalism runs rampant on modern college campuses. Many are sad shells of their former academic selves, having long since adopted entrenched and systematic forms of Jacobin indoctrination in place of the pursuit of knowledge. I did my undergrad at a university that, fortunately, was not among the worst and actually had a few conservative departments. But there were also lots of leftists pursuing off the wall leftist activities, classes, and programs. The worst element is also one that is common to most if not all modern colleges - the relentless adherence to and evangelization of a "diversity" religion. "Diversity" is almost always the name that they use to peddle the homosexual/reparations/mohammedanism/affirmative action/terrorism/environmentalist/tolerance crap that appears so frequently on campuses. This has worsened immeasurably and noticeably in the last few years alone. I applied to several universities during my senior year of high school and got freshman orientation packets from each. Some of the schedules had "diversity" lessons - included among many other campus basics - on them to be sure, but when I saw my brother's orientation schedule last week I was in shock at how much it has come to dominant freshman orientations. It has two lengthy classes on so-called "multi-cultural" training and consumes more space than probably any other topic in the orientation handbook he got. Each and every dorm now has its own "diversity officer" living on site on top of an official campuswide "office of diversity" in the adminstration building to fund and promote things like the homosexual activist program your school also has. Most schools now require or heavily emphasize some sort of "diversity" or "sensitivity" training seminar for incoming freshmen and portray them as harmless and beneficial experiences rather than the subversive propaganda sessions that they truly are.
Second, once on campus find yourself a conservative student group and get involved in it immediately. You should also get on the Young Americas Foundation mailing list - they're a conservative group that specializes in providing support material, books, and speakers to the conservative minority on the worst college campuses. Also figure out who and where the conservative professors are as soon as you can. There normally aren't many, but there is always a small handful - often holding out in an enclave of a single department or two. Ask the older students in your college republicans who they are, take their classes when possible, and introduce yourself to them. That should help you hold out for and survive the left wing freak show that is college.

Despite my son's experience in that one class, he did have a generally pleasing experience at Michigan. He took a number of courses on the VietNam war, poli sci and history and did not have to contend with a lot of leftist bunk.
I was very concerned that he might be punished, grade-wise, for his conservative views, but that did not happen.
As for roommates - he selected the substance free section of Couzens hall (where will you be living?) and had a Navy ROTC guy and a regular Michigan good ole boy as roommates for years. No political problems there, either.
Re the required diversity class - don't take anything in black studies or womens' studies. You can't win, you'll wind up being the scapegoat for every wrong thing these people see in their lives. My son is part black and I still urged against the black studies - lots of blacks have issues with being 'black enough.' Not worth the drama. Take an Asian studies course and move on.

Why don't you consider going to Hillsdale instead?

Good luck and may God bless your attempt to get educated.
What the other responders said re your comment is true enough, however I would add this:
College life is much more than politics. Yes, the political atmosphere at UM (I assume you mean UM Ann Arbor) is oppressive (I went there in the 80's & it hasn't improved since then), but I still managed to have a good some fun, meet my future wife, get a good education, and start my career following graduation.
I had and still have some rather left-leaning friends whom I met there, and we still challenge each other. But most of the time when we talk it isn't about politics.
If you see all of your college experiences through the narrow lens of politics, you will end up bitter, disillusioned, and defeated. My advice is to rise above it, find a good campus Christian group, make friends of all people, and try to be an influence for good while you're there.
Sorry for sounding like a hallmark card!

They succeeded in shouting down the anti-war protesters last fall. I wouldn't worry too much, just choose your classes wisely. See Michigan Review, the U-M Conservative newspaper.

The key is to just let it all roll off your back. I'm in my ninth (and hopefully final) year of higher education now, and I just go to the "happy place" in my mind whenever I hear the words, "diversity", "multi-culturalism", or "euro-centric".

It's not that bad, especially in the Greek system. You will discover that most students don't give a darn about politics and don't pay attention to the news, it's the townies that do all the protesting.

Maybe you can do some Freeping - promote FR among the college students, do some "converting" and "recruiting" of your own. They always say college students like to rebel, right? Well, rebel against the sodomites and deviants! I bet there are quite a few other students like you that are disgusted with this crap and would gain strength from finding others of like mind.<pMaybe you can make a cool cult out of FR reading college students.

Get ready for some liberal silliness of an extreme order. I went to law school at U. Mich.
Back then (mid-1990s), the feminist battlecry was "No free speech for fascists!". A "fascist", of course, was anyone who disagreed with them. They would mob any mildly conservative event and use that slogan to shout down any speakers.
Another great one was the school's communist movement. There was a Maoist party, a Trotskyite group, and a conventional Marxist-Leninist group - all of whom hated each other.
One young woman I met there had recently returned from Zimbabwe. She went on and on about what great things Robert Mugabe was doing for the country.
Still, the one that sums Ann Arbor up for me is the time a woman (the daughter of a very wealthy doctor) in my Constitutional Law class asked, "Why do we even bother with the Constitition when it does not protect the rights of women and minorities?" Ouch.

so why didn't you go to Notre Dame, or similar, where my daughter is headed, in four days, as an incoming freshman. we recently read a college guidebook that cited ND as "behind the times" because their dorms are not men-women mixed. yeah, so far behind, they come out ahead.
