August 13, 2003 -- Former WorldCom Inc. Chief Financial Officer Scott Sullivan, who's accused of leading a multibillion-dollar accounting fraud, says he should get no more than 12 1/2 years in prison if convicted, about half what's called for under U.S. guidelines.

Worldcom's Sullivan Wants Light Sentence. Heh. What else does he want ? This guy's brazen financial shenanigans were responsible for one of the greatest frauds ever, which are still being uncovered, such as the latest finding that hundreds of millions of dollars were misidentified. Worldcom's situation was too desperate to have prevented Sullivan from doing what he did, even if the new sentencing guidelines were in effect prior to 2000.

The fact is, he knows very well what he needs to do to lighten his sentence. That is, to name names, particularly that of the Justice Department's number one target, Mr. Bernard Ebbers who was running Worldcom at the time and it seems may have been very much aware of it all. Twenty-five-years-to-life is too lenient a price to pay for all the untold damage he perpetuated.

I say he should get life.

Only if he cooperates and names names. If not find a tree and a rope, that should send the proper message.

I don't know Ebbers or Sullivan but don't you think he should only name names if the people above him ordered him to commit the fraud? I have heard Ebbers didnt know the difference between an asset and liability. Unless the public just wants to have revenge, no matter who was guilty...

It's no surprise. EVERY politician, lawyer and corporate exec I have had the displeasure of meeting has held themselves as better than the COMMON man and well above any law.

Our congressmen and senators have committed accounting fraud on a scale that scam artists could only dream about...they they are still respected. It's odd!

I wonder if he needs a shorter sentence so he can finish his mansion in Boca Raton?

Not being a legal genius, I would think that EVERY criminal sentenced would want a "lighter sentence." That being said, he's a crook & in crimes like these throw the book at him. Make an example to all that this WILL NOT be tolerated, AND not "country club" prison either.

The economy of the United States is based on faith in capitolism. This mans actions undermine this faith and cause great harm to the economy. Far greater harm that the money he stole. His theft is a crime worthy of 20 years in prison. His effect on capitolism is worthy of life without parole.

He is a bad man and a thief. Only the severest penalties will stop others from doing the same crime.

They need to slap the maximum pentalty on all these greedy pigs. Look at all the of lives they've messed up.

I say give 'em the max and strike fear into the hearts of those who haven't been caught yet.

Reminds me of Linda (Enron) Lay crying on TV and expecting us to have sympathy for her because she had to sell a couple of their vacation homes while thousands of people here had just lost their retirement money AND their jobs.

You can add Archer Daniel Midland to that group. They were and still are among the biggest crooks. If they had been punished in the first place, I bet a lot of the other would not have happened.

I heard a former employee of Enron this morning on Booknotes, C-Span. She said threatening these guys with jail is the only thing that will make them do the right thing. Fines, etc. don't seem to do it. They still stay rich; but jail seems be something they all really, really fear. My question is where and why do they get these guys to run their companies if you have to threaten them with jail to get them to do the right thing? That's unbelievable.

Don't misunderstand me; those doing wrong should not only be threatened with jail; but put in jail.

And I can think of a few politicians who need to be there.

Oh yes, this former Enron employee also said that Enron still has 5 billion in assets even though it owes substantially more; and the judge will not turn it over to the employees; but is willing to let the lawyers who investigating what happened just grab the money in fees.

What a great world we live in where thievery seems to thrive.

For the billions of losses he directly caused and the families he helped ruin, Sullivan indeed deserves a life sentence.

Then with good behaivour he can be out in his 12 1/2 years - but at least the sentence will have been passed. I am sick and tired of justice denied in this country.

Give a room to share with a Bubba with aids, and he will get time off.

Liz, more of our favorite people going to jail. The DNC will miss his donations.
